With ’15 LB Doyle Grimes (Miami, FL) deciding to reopen his recruiting process, the Orange will focus on retaining the commitments of¬†linebackers Shyheim Cullen and Troy Henderson (who is having a stellar start to his season). Another commit Daiquan Kelly might make the move from safety to linebacker based on his athletic ability.¬†Grimes decommitted from Syracuse Monday¬†to explore his options after originally committing to the Orange in July.
The Florida product was planning to enroll at SU in January, which would have made him available to play in the spring. Grimes did not say he has ruled Syracuse out, but he visited Marshall and has other offers from West Virginia and Cincinnati. Back in February ’13, Grimes said the three main schools showing interest were LSU, Georgia and Clemson. His options have decreased¬†from national powers¬†to ones looking to crack the top 25 if that’s the case.
Now the question becomes whether Cullen and/or Henderson will receive an offer before National Signing Day from a more attractive school. Cullen received interest from Miami, Boston College and Rutgers but did not get an offer. During his visit to the Hill this summer, he raved about the coaching staff and how he felt very comfortable with the Syracuse atmosphere. As for on the field, Cullen is exactly what the Orange like. The Lowell product reminds many of a Dyshawn Davis who has used his athletic ability to play outside linebacker. This athleticism can drive Cullen to be a leader on the defensive side of the ball in future years.
Henderson will also have a decision to make if he has a productive senior year. Hailing from Lakeland, Ohio, the linebacker was down to Rutgers and Syracuse when he made his decision. Staying with the Midwest recruiting push, Clark Lea was crucial in getting Henderson to commit in July. Will another school from the Big Ten offer Henderson? Nebraska did offer before he made his decision to come to SU.
As we wrote about in the summer, decommitments are common until National Signing Day. Recruits change their minds all the time, and may not settle on a school until the 11th hour. Syracuse experienced an influx of commits before the 2014 season even started, a unique situation¬†in college football. Every school hopes their commits make it to campus,¬†but that’s not always realistic. Grimes joins Davante Davis as the only two decommitments from next year’s class thus far.
With Cameron Lynch and Dyshawn Davis graduating in the spring, early playing time could be up for grabs. Recruiting can get lost in the excitement of the season, but the work never stops for coaches. With Grimes gone, the priority must be locking up Cullen and Henderson.

Syracuse is the perfect place for these kids! What Grimes does not yet realize is that Syracuse is in position to significantly raise it’s football profile and the players responsible for that rise will be recognized. The ACC, with Clemson and Florida State already in the elite class and schools like Louisville, Virginia Tech, and Miami, with great traditions, is a conference on the rise. I keep saying this, and I believe it: Syracuse, because of it’s storied football tradition, it’s location in New York, and it’s great basketball program: the media attention that Syracuse will receive when it’s program returns to glory will be significant!!!! The same can not be said for Pitt, Boston College, Rutgers, UConn, Maryland‚Ķor any other school you might name.
What Syracuse has to sell to recruits at this time is the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of something great and exciting. Why go to Notre Dame and just get lost in an already hyped program when you can be part of building the next great program? There are a lot of kids that would g for that. The new Indoor practice facility will go a long way to presenting that picture…
It seems as if he just wants to keep his options open at this point. Would not be totally surprised to see him back at SU

Terry I will never fully understand your view on this subject. This is why I do not want to see signing day moved up. I am looking at college selection as the biggest decision of a young person’s life(to that point). These kids need to take as much time as they need to decide where the next.4 to 5 yrs of their lives will be spent living, goibg to school and playing. A decision like that is easy for some and extremely tough for others because of the factora involved. For us, all we have to factor in is whether the guy can play. Until a recruit signs his name in the dotted line I am quite ok with the indecision. These are kids who havent even really started their last yr of hs in many cases. they get bombarded with mail from all over. A lot of kids come from backgrounds that are hard to relate to or fathom. I hope Grimes eventually lands at SU if not baest wishes elsewhere.
Mr.Grimes’ mother has visited us on thei site in the past. I say now as I said then, I hope Doyle makes it up to the hill. We would be honored to have him and I have all teh faith that the coaches would take good care of him. I see this like Zephan and Ike, in that I believe Mr. Grimes just wants to see what’s still out there for him. I think we should aim for an Official Visit and I have a hard time believing we won’t beat out Marshal or WVU if we do. If after that, he doesn’t want to re-commit, then I wish him the best of luck with his future. It’s his decision ot make, and nobody elses.
On point Malone. BTW SU just offered a couple wrs who were previously committed to other schools.
As for Shy Cullen, I think he is pretty solid. We shouldn’t slack on it, but his father posts on Twitter a lot and they seem pretty happy with the choice. Part of it is the faith that our staff has shown in Shy’s ability to qualify, the primary reason BC hasn’t extended an offer and possibly one of the reasons that Miami did not either (I gather Miami also saw how strong we were in our relationship with him and thought he fit our defensive scheme well). This kid is top five, and probably the best in the state, We should be able to pull the best from NY, NJ, MA, CT year in and year out, especially with continued success. NJ will be hardest fought and I hope we can turn that corner in NY. The variable with CT is the prep programs, where players are often coming in from other schools for a year or two (Giudice is from NJ as is the top TE Chris Clark. They play for the same prep in CT. We missed on Clark because he blew up, but case in point to your ocmment above BK, Clark is still being pursued hard by Bama because of how bad Michigan looks right now). The WR we are after is a Wake commit, but he seems receptive to a flip. 6′ 2″ from Fla. The one we need to watch other than Henderson is Kelley, who was high on PSU. PSU has a GREAT class coming in and they just got more schollies. Remember last year’s LB flip.
BK SU FOOTBALL FAN: HCSS must stick to his position of “you have to want to play for SU or go else where”-period!! I totally agree with that. These kids are brought up in a media world and know it. Things change their minds constantly if so go then. Committed means committed-period again!!
