Sabres vs Flyers Recap Video: Penalties and Dan Vladar Sink Buffalo in 3-1 Loss

Rasmus Dahlin and Jason Zucker returned, but 25 penalty minutes and Dan Vladar doomed Buffalo in a 3-1 loss.

The Buffalo Sabres had every ingredient for a statement win on Wednesday night, only to hand the recipe directly to Philadelphia.

No excuses, no silver linings: Buffalo beat themselves on Wednesday night.

Against a Philadelphia Flyers team struggling to find the back of the net, the Sabres spent 25 minutes parading to the penalty box, handed over all momentum and ran straight into a 27-save wall named Dan Vladar in a deflating 3-1 loss at KeyBank Center.

The pregame setup favored Buffalo across the board. Both Rasmus Dahlin and Jason Zucker made their return from injury, providing an immediate shot in the arm for a roster that had been riding Tage Thompson and Jack Quinn through the opening weeks of the season.

Zucker slotted onto the third line next to Josh Norris and Konsta Helenius and made an instant impression. When Buffalo needed an answer late in the second period, Zucker went to the dirty area in front on the man advantage, tipping home a feed from Jack Quinn to make it 2-1 and inject life back into the building.

That push didn’t last.

Flyers rookie Cole Knuble put together a personal highlight reel, racking up the first two goals in his NHL career. His second tally early in the third period pushed the lead back up two and took the wind completely out of Buffalo’s sails.

From there, discipline completely vanished.

The Sabres took seven penalties on the night, forcing their penalty killers into exhaustion and keeping their best offensive talent stapled to the bench. Mattias Samuelson dropped the gloves with Hunter McDonald late in the third period to blow off steam, but by then, the game was long gone.

Even during brief spurts of even-strength pressure, Dan Vladar stood on his head. The Flyers’ net minder turned away 27 Buffalo shots, blanking Dahlin and Thompson while eliminating rebounds. Trailing by a pair in the final 20 minutes, the Sabres went dormant: zero shots on goal through the first 7:04 of the third period and just five total shots in the entire frame.

The swagger Buffalo showed early last season was nowhere to be found down the stretch.

Lindy Ruff and his staff have a laundry list of corrections to make before hitting the ice again. Having Dahlin and Zucker back creates depth on paper, but until this group stays out of the box and sustains offensive zone pressure, results like Wednesday will keep repeating themselves.
