Syracuse’s current 25-man 2015 recruiting class could look a little different in six months time when National Signing Day rolls around. The Orange has already had one recruit decommit in Florida cornerback DaVante Davis. He may end up being the only player to do so, but another decommitment is certainly possible.
It is up to the Scott Shafer and the rest of the Syracuse coaches to keep the commits focused solely on the Orange.
Davis decommitted because after he accepted Syracuse’s offer he began to receive football scholarships from historic programs that he had to consider, such as Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Florida State. It is unlikely that another player that has already committed to Syracuse will receive offers similar to Davis’, but other programs will definitely try to woo particular SU commits away.
Ohio outside linebacker Troy Henderson Jr. committed to Syracuse earlier this week. He was originally supposed to choose his school on the 4th of July, but a late offer from the University of Nebraska changed all of that. Henderson Jr. still ended up picking Syracuse, but he did so without visiting Nebraska’s campus. Nothing is stopping the linebacker from visiting Lincoln before he signs his letter of intent in February.
Another 2015 linebacker commit, Doyle “Biggie” Grimes, is yet to even visit Syracuse. That does not automatically make him a decommitment candidate, but it is tough to be 100 percent on board with a program before actually checking it out in person.
Luckily for SU fans, for every decommitment worry there is an Andrejas Duerig. In a June interview with the Fizz Duerig said that he plans on changing phone numbers to prevent other programs from contacting him.
Yes, Duerig is that certain about Syracuse football.
With a top thirty recruiting class, it will take a lot for a 2015 commit to opt out of four years of Syracuse football.

While it’s always a possibility that a recruit or three can have a change of heart between now and the first week in February,
CUSE fans gotta like where we sit today.
Last spring we had to add a few walk-ons. With this large a class it would seem that won’t be an issue in the spring of 2015.
It sounds like the recruits and coaches have built relationships…strong relationships when you hear some players talk. The coaches seem to be able to relate to the players better than Marrone and his group for example.
And now the coaches have only to worry about the first week in August…getting special teams in order, the offense rolling, the defense scheming, player rotations…Nova home opener then C MICH on the road. We take care of business against Maryland, start 3-0..then class of ’15 recruits have no reason to decommit.
2 maybe 3 3-stars players will change their minds about SU. Probably because SU has a 6-6 or worse record this coming year. The staff knows that feeling and better have a plan in motion. With some players decommitting and not qualifying leaves huge holes in depth. That has to stop. It could show a weakness in the staff.
DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU!!
THE NCAA DID!! sorry just heat stroke I guess!!
The staff does a very good job of keeping these kids interested and enthused about the Orange so while flip might happen I’m not going try and predict who they might be. Flips can come our way as well.you know Staying positive is part of the key along with winning games and remaining relevant on the schedules of our opponents by generating a little fear if not upsets. They will happen soon enough.
Its natural to have a change of heart. We all have to remember that these are HS kids in the process of making the biggest decision(to date) in their lives. Thats why I wouldn’t be in favor of pushing the signing date to a sooner point in the calender. All hs kids need time to really think about the schools and situations prior to committing. Heck its good practice for life. Take in all the information. Hopefully, each kid will still feel like SU is the place for them.
Until players don’t qualify or actually decommitt this staff isn’t weak.. It’s funny how the Brown kid from Florida decided to pick Tennessee instead of syracuse last year. Now he’s looking for transfer, no room here at cuse, sorry. Every school has a couple of kids that don’t qualify. That’s what keeps prep schools and JUCO in business.
Dan The real story here is I doubt the staff didn’t know about a players poor grades. They take a crazy gamble and loose=lack of depth.
we may lose some but i feel schafer and co made it clear that they hope the verbal commits stick to there word come signing day. i beleive alot of our guys are under the radar as well which is fine. there will be some that other schools will want to take as time goes on. with a commitment from su to enhance football facilities is really a big factor with our recruiting as well as the conference and coaching staff. i beleive were on track as far as recruiting goes but we can’t lose track of that..
Not many freshman come in and contribute at their position. They need time to get stronger and get used to coaches terminology. That’s why is good to have juniors and seniors around. We had two guys from this class not qualify, I’m not seeing a problem at those positions because their aren’t here. Definitely would be nice to have them here taking classes, working out with strength and conditioning coaches, but I’m sure they will be taken care of at prep school with same. If they don’t make it here coach will have two more spots open to fill next recruiting cycle.
Next man up as coach likes to say!!!
Dan!!! You don’t have Jr’s/Sr’s you have empty spots=lack of depth. When a player does not qualify!! Stupid gamble!!
I think I saw some Jrs/Sr on syracuse.com today.
I didn’t see any open spots that you talk about. Must be a different team you are talking about.
I’m with Dan’s line of thinking here. But I understand the concern Terry has about taking gambles. I just don’t consider KJ a gamble. I think it may prove to be worth it. KJ has to take the initiative and put in the classroom work
Terry
I just counted 10 Wide receiver upperclassmen
And 8 defensive back upperclassmen. Upperclassmen = Jr/Sr
WHERE is lack of depth?? I didn’t count soph/ or incoming freshman.
Granted not all will see the field but we don’t lack depth.
Its better to fight to keep your verbal commitments than to never get them at all.
Its a nice change to have a group of recruits that other quality schools want to steal away. Typically Akron doesn’t steal our recruits.
WR is certainly not a quantitative depth issue. It looked all along like coaches were over stacking so as to anticipate 1-2 non qualifying. Losing the one who appeared most poised to possibly contribute early stings, but by all appearance it was not a surprise.
It will be interesting to see what transpires if these early commitments have big senior years and the big time schools come calling. SU still offers an exciting style, opportunity to play early on, and a family atmosphere. That has to be the sell along with success on the field this fall. It still leads to the staff having a lot of work still to do to keep hold of the current commits and probably still grab 2-3 more. Nice problem to have vs. the alternative.n
