The latest addition to Syracuse’s 22-strong 2015 recruiting class is linebacker Doyle “Biggie” Grimes from Champagnat Catholic high school in Hialeah, Florida.
The two high schools Grimes has attended have many connections to the SU football program. He currently attends the same high school as 2015 cornerback Gerald Robinson, which is in the same town as 2014 quarterback Alin Edouard’s school, Hialeah Senior high school. Grimes transferred to Champagnat Catholic from South Dade high school where 2014 cornerback Antwan Cordy attended. Both Champagnat Catholic and South Dade won state titles last season.
Grimes was unranked at the time of his commitment but has recently earned a 2-star rating from rivals.com.
He may be unknown to many Syracuse fans, but the local Florida media has given Grimes nothing but praise.¬†Sfhighschoolsports.com¬†tells readers to, ‚ÄúRemember this name. [Grimes] may very well be the best linebacker in south Florida when the junior class is sorted out and all of the talent is examined.”¬†A Miami University recruiting site,¬†Canesinsight.com,¬†called Grimes a ‚Äúplayer set to emerge‚Äù in 2013.
And emerge he did. In his tape titled “STATE CHAMPS,” Grimes displays his speed and physical nature in every play. It is clear to see that he was one of the main defensive contributors to South Dade’s state championship run.
George McDonald sold Grimes on SU right when his stock was about to take off. West Virginia offered him in early June and an offer from Miami may also have been on the way (the school had been in contact with him as early as August 2013). Grimes’ brother Jamal Carter plays safety for the Hurricanes.
In late May Grimes tweeted that he plans on graduating high school early in December, which most likely means he will enroll early at SU, another positive sign for Scott Shafer and SU football.

I do not see a who lot in this tape that gets me excited. Grimes looks very good but not anyone elso on the field. Sacks with no one blocking from the blind side is not a big deal.
I was not impressed with his taped interview I saw elsewhere. I cannot believe he will graduate in Decmber.
I believe Grimes will flip if Miami offers
ricke78,
Must be you stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. From your post I cannot believe that you actually graduated from high school.
Doyle “Biggie” Grimes welcome to SU. Enjoy your senior year and we look forward to you being part of the Class of 2015.
GOOD MORNING SU,(RICKE78)THANK YOU FOR YOU COMMENTS AND CONCERN,BUT PLEASE DONT JUDGE MY SON BY AN INTERVIEW TAPE.HE IS VERY INTELIGENT AND WILL BE GRADUATING IN DEC,WAS TESTED GIFTED IN THE SECOND GRADE SO DONT LET THAT FOOL YOU.THE QUESTION IS CAN YOU GO OUT AND PLAY LIKE SOME OF THESE YOUNG MAN OR YOUR ONE OF THOSE SIDELINE COMMENTATORS.AND ANOTHER THING I RAISED MY SONS TO BE A MAN OF THEIR WORDS,SO FLIP THAT.
Biggie Momma,
If you are truely Doyle’s mother, please don’t mistake the opinion of one person as a means to gauge the excitement of the fanbase to have your son in the fold of our family. I for one am very excited to have him commit to Syracuse and look forward to watching his football development at my alma mater. I am especially happy with the prospect that he may enroll early. The sooner he gets immersed in the program, the better he and we will be. Coach Shafer will take good care of your son. I have confidence in that.
@BIGGIE MOMMA;
I second everything Malone has addressed in his above post.
I’m going to take it a step further,I work on South Campus,if he ever needs to talk with someone have him stop by for a chat. I feel like I’m a big brother to a lot of these kids and I love talking to all of them.
Biggie Momma, Thank you for pointing out my pre-judgement of Biggie’s academic standing and the value of his verbal committment. I admit to being frustrated with recent recruits who didn’t make the grade-not just 2014 recruits but recruits from previuos years. I also get frustrated when a player turns away from a verbal committment to SU when a better opportunity becomes available. I know these are teenagers and they have a right to change their minds. I am glad you raised your sons to keep their word. TO Ron, Malone, SU Loyal and others, I appreciate your loyalty to SU. I will be a better SU fan because of your responses.
Good Morning
Thanks for understanding what I was trying to say.as a mother it’s very hard for me to watch others talk about my children. I guess it comes with the game. I should expect it anyways because when his brother jamal gave a verbal commitment to university of Miami a lot of people said the same things, but as I have said then I’m saying now I raised both my boys to keep their words and be true.
(I am truly Doyle’s mother).
