Mark your calendars: the Fizz brings you the five most exciting football games for 2014-15. The 2014 SU football season has some big programs on the list with an opportunity for the Orange to go to its fourth bowl in five years.
- Syracuse vs. Notre Dame – Because the game will be played in East Rutherford, the Orange will expect a pro-Irish crowd despite the difference in proximity. The Orange will play the Fightin’ Irish for the first time since putting off the upset in South Bend in 2008. The series is currently tied 3-3. A win would be massive for the program. Like all SU games played at MetLife Stadium, recruits from all around the area will be watching and seeing what the Orange has to offer. Unlike the Penn State game last year, the Orange will have a few games against lower-tier schools such as Villanova and Central Michigan to build momentum and chemistry early on. The game will most certainly be on national television, something that the Orange needs to capitalize on, considering how many games they have played recently in New Jersey.
- Syracuse vs. Louisville – A week after the Notre Dame game, the familiar Louisville Cardinals will visit the Hill in their first visit as members of the ACC. The game is scheduled for Friday night so expect a packed crowd at the Dome. The last time the Cardinals came to Syracuse, the Orange pulled off a mighty upset against Teddy Bridgewater and 9th-ranked Louisville. The Cardinals will be a familiar face to the Orange, who met many times in the Big East. It will be interesting to see how the Louisville program reacts on the field to a new head coach after Charlie Strong bolted in the offseason to Texas.
- Syracuse vs. Florida State — The schedule does not get any easier as the defending national champions come to town the week after. Heisman winner Jameis Winston will be looking to compete again for the prized trophy. The Orange its fair share of issues in Tallahassee last year as the Seminoles¬†crushed the Orange 59-3. Winston threw for 277 yard and two TDs in the rout. This will be by far the hardest stretch the Orange go through on their schedule, but luckily a few of the games will be occurring in the Carrier Dome, where we have¬†seen our fair share of upsets.
- Syracuse vs. Clemson – The Orange will make its first trip to Death Valley this season to avenge a 49-14 spanking the Tigers gave them last season. Tajh Boyd has taken his talents to the NFL and Clemson is looking for their next quarterback after Chad Kelly got thrown off the team. That name sound familiar? He was a Buffalo product who looked at the Orange but chose the Tigers instead a few years ago. Sammy Watkins, who burned the Orange for a 91-yard touchdown last year, has also left Can the Orange capitalize on Clemson’s losses? We will see October 25th.
- Syracuse vs. Duke – Who knew this rivalry could extend beyond basketball when Syracuse joined the ACC? Duke had a tremendous season under David Cutcliffe last year and looks to build some momentum in a football program that has not seen much success. The Orange will only have two more games after this and both are on the road against former Big East foes Pittsburgh and Boston College. If the Orange are a few wins shy of a bowl game, the Duke game could prove to be crucial to SU’s bowl chances.
We are exactly four months away from the 2014 Syracuse football season.

Shafer has a real challenge….tough to compete with these programs with our facilities. The Administration needs to get off its dead ass and support The FB Program.
Thank you Cuse17-your right!! The facilities and lack of a “got to get them done” is a black eye to SUFB program. Its not even started yet!! I have heard other programs are playing on that against SUFB, when it comes to recruiting!! They tell a player see SUFB can’t even get its own house in order. What do expect them to be down the road?? SU needs to show confidence not unawareness. Others will preach that weakness to talent and SU will lose that talent!! The little birdies are singing out there, yet no one is listening!! I know “Malone” feels differently but SUFB facilities are in a total different world that the Melo Center was when it got built!! It was wanted badly and got built rather quickly(a hell of a lot quicker than the SUFB facilities)!! The administration and fan base just admire the SUBB program because of its recent success. They just don’t feel the same love for the SUFB program just yet. And stalling or call it what ever you want to call it shows that!! The facilities should of been 1/3 done by now and only lack of concern shows its graces against the SUFB program from the POWERS TO BE!! WAKE UP!!
I disagree with Zephan!! Leave out ND, Clemson and FSU they are loses!! SU needs to show very strong against its other ACC foes!! SU must show the ACC and nation its willing to improve!! Lets take baby steps when it comes building SUFB. My absolute dream would be(right now) 7-5!! But the OL and DL are very weak and that record might be just to high for this fall!! Every game other than the first 2(should win) and the 3 loses mentioned above are going to be barn burners!! 2015 recruiting started off very slow for 2015-with two NR’s and a 2 star maybe 3 star so far. SU has to beat the teams of the ACC that they are better than or equal to or just a notch below in quality!! Do that and 7-5 is coming with a better bowl than the last 3 years!! Which hopefully means better talent and less of the hope and pray talents and another 6-6 season year after year!!

Terry, the only thing I think I disagreed with you on was that the aesthetic appearance of the IPF will match that of the Melo Center. Being that Melo is a white box, it shouldn’t be that challenging. SUFB does take a back seat to BB, I never argued that. I think there is a perception that the BB brings the money. This may be true, today, but its penny wise, pound foolish. We all know that FB makes more money in the long run. I like to believe we’ll get there.
The IPF slow start is in part the fault of the local community. The city had its part and the local contractors had theirs. drawings have been done for almost a year. The cost is not what most think either and I have mentioned that before. There are other renovation projects being done under the advertised cost umbrella. Luckily, some of them are upgrades to the academic support spaces and conferencing spaces in the athletics complex.
I have indeed heard that the permits are being held up by the city due to a variance of some sort. I believe this is still related to the drainage issue I’ve mentioned in the past. I had heard May 1 with a November/December opening date. If that is pushed a month (now hearing Memorial Day) then we may not have it for Bowl practices.
Malone its all about how much the “WANT” is for these facilities!! SU should have the influence to move this along and use its resources, but it just let’s it pass. If SUFB was a top 20 team you’d wouldn’t see this happening!! Well maybe you would??
I see that Vandy wants SU in a game by game match!! Vandy is a far better fit than LSU!! You’ll see that after you leave the DOME after the LSU game!! OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you read the article on ESPN concerning the new head coach of Penn State James Franklin?
This paragraph was taken from the article.
“The allegations that I did something wrong are simply not true,” Franklin said in a statement released by Penn State. “I have cooperated fully with the authorities in this matter but, out of respect for the legal process, I am not able to comment any further.”
I think Penn State has fallen deeper into the abyss,and if Franklin is found guilty of any wrong doing at Vanderbilt and ends up being released from his current duties,there will be no recovery of the “Nittney Lion” football program.
RON- So far Franklin is better than the coach he replaced. We’ll just have to wait and see. But always PSABUSERU will always be SU’s number ONE rival. I still don’t get that at all that they say SU has no rival. I live a couple of miles from the NY/PA border on the NY side mostly Orange on the PA side Navy Blue and White(ugly to)!!!!
RON also read an article on the new facilities!! Supposed to start in a “few weeks”!! We’ll see!!
RON-Where is the new so called stadium supposed to be built??? I feel the DOME is fine. But if a new stadium is built it should be for FB/LAX maybe hockey/softball only too! Let JB have the DOME then!! I know mainly the DOME and Mall locations and Erie Blvd. area. Any where else I might get lost!! Thank you!!
Read a another article on Nunes about 12 games being to many for SUFB!! The writer and his wife were admitted pro SUBB too!!! Well I feel 30 games is way to many SUBB games to. Should be around 15/20 for College BB-HUH?? Hell College Basket means nothing until late FEBUARY any way!! Just another arrow from local media saying SUBB is NUMBER ONE!! Enough already!!

I remember the ‚Äúgood ole day’s‚Äù when Syracuse played BC,Maryland and Penn State during the regular season. Beano Cook once told me that it was a crying shame and that college football really needed /missed Syracuse/Penn State playing each other on an October Saturday afternoon ,
Dr. Gross himself told me last October that the materials for the new IPF building was ready and was going to start arriving in November with the construction of the complex to begin right after Thanksgiving. Well that didn’t happen and I hate being lied too. I just don’t trust the man myself.
If they ever get to a point of building a new stadium Terry, I’d like to see a new 36,000 seat building built for basketball and not football. If a new 36,000 basketball arena were built off campus,do you think that it would be big enough to house the NCAA Womens and Mens FINAL FOUR?
If you know the Erie Blvd area you’ve probably driven past the site numerous times. It’s at the intersection of University Ave. and Erie Blvd.,where the National Guard building use to be before getting torn down. I feel if they wanted to build it there they (state and city governments)would have to use their ‚Äúeminent domain‚Äù privileges to secure all the land from Genessee Street also known as Rt 5 to Erie Blvd and starting at University Ave going west to Townson Street. Everyone needs to remember that they want to add a shopping mall to this project also. We’re talking about a mall and stadium being built and haven’t even started talking about parking lot’s yet. It’s an election year,the local and state politicians promise new and wonderful things to get reelected. My only question is where do they get the money that’s needed for such projects?
I read that article on Nunes website too Terry and I think it had more to do with his surprise when his wife told him that it was time to purchase season football tickets.

Yeah Ron I know that area on Erie Blvd!! Others were asking me about where if any NEW buildings would go.
The Nunes article was to me the long lasted excitement of SUBB and lack of real interest in SUFB!! Although college football is far more liked nation wide!! That article just shows how SUFB has fallen to “OTHER” SU fans!!
I can drive a few miles and see PA. I always had a affection for their women too!! I married a PA girl!! Well really 2 of them. Divorced one! LOL! And HSFB there is way more important to those folks than in NYS!! About 10 years ago one of the local PA teams down there were in the State playoff run. Their stadiums(small school) normally like with a huge rival might sit/stand maybe 1000 tops. Every seat is sold!! At this state playoff game there was 15 people deep all around the field. Amazing!! They play at these old fields too. Many at the county fair grounds too. Old time HSFB!! But still a blast. We still go to a few good game through the years and I always wear my SU stuff. But 95% of the people there are true PSABUSEDU SOLID fans no matter what. A lot of lower level college talent comes out of these areas. Real lot of Ivy league kids too!! Country football at its best!! Football is king there!! We still have our DNA running around on those old school fields. So we enjoy it when possible. Besides its a cheap date too!! LOL!
PS!! I used get a lot of good natured kidding about SU’s FB teams or even The Bernie issue from those PA folks!! But since the Abuse Issue happened at PSABUSEDU they don’t say a thing. Most folks are pissed about it and how Joe Pa was treated, but in reality they told me they were embarrassed about what happened to those children. They feel its a major mark against PSABUSERU!! But they go on!! Because all the ranks of football in these areas is important to them. Pee wee to the Steelers! Great proud people they are!! But the administration and the NCAA still don’t see that!! So I still say!!

New York has always been a joke when it comes to football. High school football in neighboring states are far superior to anything that the NYS high schools can provide. I’ve always said Terry that if you had a chance to play high school football be proud. Where I came from local politics run supreme. My friends and I went to the AD and head football coach of our school and guaranteed them a Tri-Valley league Championship. Because of our last names and the part of town that we lived in none of us were allowed to participate.
When you describe to us how country football is played in PA. it sounds like Kenny Chesney’s song “The Boys of Fall”. Your on point when you describe the Penn St fans as being loyal to their team. Thirty years ago I took my thirteen year old son and traveled to Beaver Stadium to watch a Penn St/Syracuse game and pre-game festivities when the marching band come out of the tunnel and performed in front of a sold out stadium dressed in Blue and White. It was a sight that I’ve never forgotten and to me was truly amazing.
I played HSFB on a great team for two years. And the teams we beat then would not even sniff playing my school now because my school is a class D school. My HSFB hey day I’d guess it would be a B class! Last years team did not have enough kids to play so the WHOLE year was killed=SAD!! Not being a COUNTRY(UGH)fan at all(PA they are)your right the atmosphere is great. I remember going to a game with my DAD(now that’s years ago) and the warm ups echoed through the small valley. WOW!! That sensation has never left me. Small never means weak just different!!
As for going to a PSABUSEDU game your right its quite a thing. But remember that its about the only thing Happy Valley has for it. So their Happy Valley show has spent a great amount of $$$$$$$$$$$$$ to make it that way!! And it worked!! I have watched games there where the players looked like ants. I could have talked to the Higher Power at that altitude!! That is not worth the $$$$$ and time spent on those tickets!! But if you go to the tailgating now that’s a ball. Especially if your with PSABUSEDU fans!! SU’s tailgating, like I said a thousand times before, is a total joke. Matter of fact, I believe it could improve, but the administration and City fathers just don’t want to cure that problem!! Too bad!! Great tailgating IS PART OF THE GAME!!
I read were Phillips a RB from Conn. is doing good in the class. He passed his SAT and is expected to graduate this spring from HS!! I felt that it was a mistake that SU would sign a academic problem player in the 2014 class!! He might prove me wrong???
