Syracuse Demolished by Florida State 59-3: D.A.’s Knee-Jerk Reaction

The Orange got its helmets handed to it as expected against the #2 team in the nation.

SU Athletics

There’s very little good to have come out of the 59-3 beatdown in Tallahassee for Syracuse. Here’s my knee-jerk reaction:

-We all knew this was coming, and the Seminoles delivered. Even before the season, when we had no idea just how good FSU would be, this Orange squad heading on the road to Tallahassee looked like roadkill on the schedule. Once we realized just how dominant the Noles (best team in the country?) we all knew there was no way the Orange could hang. FSU put the smack down on an inferior team.

-The sexual assault investigation apparently had no effect on the Noles and Jameis Winston. FSU showed no mercy, and seemed far from being distracted like some suggested. The Noles jumped out to a 28-0 lead, and the only question was whether SU basketball would outscore FSU football on this day (it did, 69-59).

-The Julian Whigham injury is just plain scary. He was taken off on a stretcher and Durrell Eskridge said after the game JW was bleeding from the mouth. Luckily SU put out a statement saying Julian was improving, but the injury was bleeding from the abdomen. That’s a frightening sentence to read no matter who you root for.

-Syracuse has to have a short memory. This was a splattering in every way, so now it’s up to the Orange not to let it hang over the season. Two winnable games remain to get to bowl eligibility. Two home games, Pitt next week and then BC. SU should let it all hang out against the Panthers. The Eagles are a much improved team from a year ago. Steve Addazio certainly has BC playing inspired, improved football. Syracuse doesn’t want bowl eligibility to have to come down to the final week of the season. Wrap it up against Pitt.

-Which stat sums up the blowout best? Hard to pick just one, but how about the fact SU was 6-18 on third downs, while FSU was 1-4. Yeah, read that again. Florida State put up 59 points, tallied 20 first downs, gained over 500 yards of total offense… and only had to face third down four times. The Noles offense was so brutally efficient it did all of its damage on 1st and 2nd downs.

-Clearly the Orange is not even in the same stratosphere as the Noles, but that FSU team sure has the look of a national champion. Alabama deserves another crack at the BCS title if it can survive the Iron Bowl against a resurgent Auburn squad. But the Noles will be a tough matchup for the Tide searching for its third straight crystal bowl.

    We all knew this was coming, and the Seminoles delivered. I guess more people than I felt just how the game was going to go,and just remember,If Jimbo Fisher hadn’t pulled his starting units off the field just how bad it would have been for the Orangemen.

    @Carlton;

    We might see a change in the polls on Tuesday. Alabama didn’t look good against Mississippi State on Saturday and I’m wondering if their poor performance would be enough to jump FSU to #1.

    Wish the best for Whigham. Just an unfortunate thing to happen.

    If we want to see our team make a bowl game. We as fans of this team need to support them in the next two games. Show up at the dome and help this team win. We need to pack the dome. Show these young men just how much we support them and wish them success. I know that sound cheesy. But after what has happened to them. Packing the dome will be a good morale boost for this team. Hope all you agree with me on this.

    Yes Ron, your a regular modern day Nostradamus.

    One other thing I would like to add. I feel on the positive side of the game. I feel the defense was okay. Yeah we gave up 59 points but we were able to get to the QB and make some sacks. Eskridge is just awesome. That kids is a good ball player. On the offensive side. I feel Morris and Mcfarland had good games. That was good game experience for them. I’m sure that both will be even better next year. I know some of you will disagree with me on this. That’s okay. Hope for the better next week against Pitt.

    I have been an SU fan long enough to remember when we could beat teams like Clemson by double digits and go into the Big House at Michigan at destroy a good football team. The talent gap between Cuse and the ACC elite teams is huge. We have to continue to get better players. We are off to a good start. The player that is missing is a big time QB. When we get that player, the offense will become dominant again. Let’s hope one of the 4 QB’s in these last two classes can be that player!!!!

    Serious question. Is it really a “Knee-Jerk Reaction” if it’s the day after? Isn’t knee-jerk reaction an immediate reaction? Seems kind of lame

    I agree with Upstate Andy, especially with regard to showing up for the Pitt game. Pack the Dome and make noise. Beating Pitt last year was a turning point and it can be again this year. Dr. Bill, a lot of us here remember the times you speak of. That team was more than just McNabb, but your point is not lost. We had a good secondary and receivers, as well as undersized, but quick RBs.

    Ron, don’t you think these fans neede to have reality pointed out to them. Syracuse will never, ever win a division, let alone an ACC conference title. And Gross’ talk of a National Championship is lala land. Why waste your money on a hopeless cause. It’s basketball season use your money to support a winning endeavor.

    Has an SU fan I am disappointed in yesterday’s performance. We looked timid, out of sorts…yeah does FSU some more explosive players? Absolutely, but I feel to play with teams like that, you have to score more then 3 points.

    -I’m sorry, but Our offense is awful. I think the play calling has been suspect all year, Hunt can’t read a defense and make the necessary reads at the line, not to mention he hardly creates any offense for us and the o-line is mediocre. My suggestion is more passing plays down field, trick plays and not telegraphing our play calls (example: Drew Allen showing a fake hand off and dropping back on 3rd and long. Everyone knows your throwing it, you didn’t fake anyone out).

    Defensively, there wasn’t a lot of pressure. Seemed like bullough was looking to play prevent all game an he only prevented FSU from possibly scoring a 100.

    Listen it’s year one for the coaching staff, I get it, but don’t preach “hard nose” and come out already knowing the game is a loss…

    Please higher power up there look out for Julian. Thank you!!

    Look out for more decommits if the history stays the same and who blames them. SU was embarrassing yesterday!! Terrible showing. Don’t get me wrong. The kids did the best they could. But their talent is at 2 star/NR at best. RON this is why lower rated talent will not get The CUSE into conference championships-no way!! SU played against 3+ and above talent. SU’s talent base now might get a low level Louisiana bowl playing a team we hardly know nothing about-WHOOPEE!!

    I feel(again said way too many times) its a talent and coaching issue. MASSIVE blow-outs show that!! A QB who has not thrown a TD for weeks sucks(why do they have HUNT be a spokesman at pressers, put a player on who shows up every weekend)!! The DB’s were lost again. I watched the replay and they ran towards the action instead of AT the action. No doubt this team was intimidated by FSU. HSCC complained about the hit on WEST well that’s called HARD-NOSED football. FSU is a quality hard hitting team live with that and quit bitching!! After all it was in the chest not at the head or knees!! Love ya HCSS, but please coach stop whinning! Way too many blowouts!!

    Maybe the RB coach should be fired to!! I really love these young RBs but they run way too high(watch the replay)!! If this keeps up they will be killed!! I really see no positives at all from this game!! You tell me where!! SU got slaughtered on national TV,lost a number of players and now SU has to win at least one game to go to a no name bowl!! SU will not beat BC. So the game to win is PITT. We need a full Dome for that game.

    Hey RON/RUSS MR ROUSE made the right decision to go BC way huh. They are going good bowling!! Totally smart move-great for him!! SU blew it!! Oh yeah Mr Smith instead of looking at 4th/5th/6th round pick in next years draft for running back look at BC’s RB. He stayed AND ran his ass off AND did not get caught from behind AND I bet he’s going higher than 4th/5th/or 6th!! Heisman talk for him now!! Mr Rouse is next!!

    Do Not forget the kids of PSABUSEDU!! The NCAA did!!

    Ron,Terry is right. We need less than 10,000 fans at home games , that’s all a perenial sub .500 team deserves. Why let the administration hoodwink you into buying tickets just so they can get thier bloated salaries. The 2014 schedule looks like 3-5 wins, why buy season tickets for a garbage product like that. Hardnosed, everytime we play a very good team we come apart like a cheap suit. Addazio will show Mr. can’t keep his mouth shut what hardnosed is.

    I agree that some of the techniques that our young RBs are using stinks. I see them hitting the LOS sideways and high.Even Jerome has done this and go down too easily. Our WRs don’t have a clue about separation moves. Hunt is hardly the future as our QB. Regardless of the quality of our WRs he can’t pass with any consistency.

  14. upstate andy Avatar

    Dr Bill I remember those days too. I agree with you on talent level. It’s obvious when we play that we just don’t have it. A couple of weeks back I mentioned that if you were a recruit being recruited by cuse and watched the games. These players would see that they could get immediate playing time when and if they came. We have positions of need that have to be filled with better talent.

  15. JB Avatar

    Ron, I don’t see you disageeing with my analysis that Syracuse will never,ever win anything in the ACC in football. People respect you, you should tell them to quit going to games and get ripped off supporting this sham.

    Ron now a little on the Elmira Express!!

    The homer media guy Mr Webb really is a piece of work!! He wrote about CBA’s injuries,a bad spot that cost CBA and a fumble that hurt CBA too. All of these issues are going to happen in football. Quite whining Mr Webb!! Oh how Mr Webb mentioned the combined teams of Elmira Southside and Elmira Free Academy to form the Elmira Express!! You have to remember that the Express kids are breed and have the DNA of their neighborhoods. These local kids live blocks from each other not miles from each other. That makes a difference. Because fate plays a major role in the talent pool growing up in your area. They just don’t go out and recruit kids from pee wee days to enroll at a private high school. There is a huge difference there. Its either HS ball or near Div III ball.

    Ron Zazzara was ok but still borderline DIV 1. He has decent recruited WRs on his team. That makes him playable for Buffalo!! LOL!!

    Don’t forget that this public High School team from the Twin Tiers made a 65 yard drive to score against the massive private school from the north and win the game. A great achievement!!! But Mr Webb didn’t mention Mr Thomas’s(maybe the player of the game)100yd rushing game. But also Mr Webb said nothing about Mr McPeak also had 100yards rushing to. And McPeak was all season long a gem on the team to!! Two good kids!!

    Finally-The Express plays another private school(I think) and if so they probably recruit. Aquinas is a power house-no kidding. They are always up there like CBA year after year. I/We and you know why they win regularly. Its a shame, but it is what it is. If you beat these “better than toughs” the victory is even more sweeter. But to me and others these private schools should have there own different route to a state championship!! Stay out of the public schools turf!! But also Section 4 kicked some Section 3 butts this playoff season. Country football folks!!
    PS RON Zarrara to me is over rated, but the kid to watch is the Soph QB from Aquinas. He could develop into something. Besides he ain’t from CBA!! LOL!!

    Go Elmira Express the one of the best High School made of sole neighborhood kids in AA class-I feel. The real meaning of public high school football!! Bring your sling shot to beat the giant recruiters. After all high school football is at its purest when played in a public schooled way. No $$$$ changes hands. Just hand shakes after a truely hard fought game.

    GO ELMIRA EXPRESS!! Your sincere to us EXPRESS fans!!

    Terry,your right about public school FB being as fair and pure as it should be!It was what made me fall in love with the game as a kid!My town vs your town or neighborhood vs neighborhood!!No ringers,skin on skin,ethnic pride etc etc!But its become big business to some jaded hangers on’s and a way to profit on someone elses talent!They’ve perfected cheating and destroyed the purity of my beloved game(not to mention soften).Are they going to kill the golden goose??

Ten we get beat by the best team by far in the country and you’re bitching like really! We finish out 7-5 that’s exactly where we shoul be we beat teams were supposed to beat and list to teams were supposed to lose to what more can you ask?

    @Terry;

    I didn’t like the story that was in the papers on Sunday either. CBA lost the damn game,didn’t get their way and starting in crying about how bads the referees were during the game and how they got robbed at the end with the spot being short of the endzone.

    But that’s how they are. I don’t follow them for that reason Terry,I get sick of the crying.

    Congratulations to the Express,I wish them luck next week.

    @JB;

    In my first article JB,I didn’t write the first sentence,I copied it from DA’s Article. It’s just some of us realized more than others what was about to happen in that game.

    We need to be there on Saturday to show and give support for the team. It’s a big game and I’m hoping Syracuse beats Pittsburgh for the second time in two years and becomes bowl eligible in doing so. I agree with what Terry and Dr. Bill has said,I agree with it all.

  23. Ron Avatar

    @JB;

    I’ve seen both the good and the bad sides of the Syracuse Football Team.

    I started following the team back in 1959 by reading about them in the Sunday papers,vaguely remember reading about the Championship game against Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

    The dark side of the program was near the end of Ben Schwartzwalders career as head coach of the Orangemen and the “Black Boycott” of the team in 1970. When Coach Schwartzwalder retired in 1973,the university hired Frank Maloney and the dark side continued until Coach MacPhearson was hired and was successful in turning the program around.

    During the good times I remember the wins against teams like Nebraska,Wisconsin,Michigan,Va Tech,Miami,Penn State,Clemson,Auburn,Colorado,kansas St etc,etc,etc. I remember posting overall records consistantly 10-2,8-4,9-3,11-0-1,

    Your point about winning another National championship,I had that arguement 25 years ago with a good friend of mine at work,when he said Syracuse couldn’t compete with the largew state School. Of course I had a different view. You say we’re never going to win a Divisional Title or the ACC League Championship. You were probably saying the same thing about Miami and Va Tech after they left the Big East. I remembrer people saying that neither school would win,but they did,didn’t they…

    The the program turns back to the dark side,Coach Pasqualoni wasn’t posting the 8-9 and 10 win seasons anymore,the fans became restless and wanted him fired,enter Nancy Cantor and Dr. Gross and the dark side continues to this day.

    I’ve traveled up and down the east coast,Michigan,Ohio to watch the orangemen play the game. What have you done?

    So you consider me and a few others here “serious losers” of the program. I’ve probably forgotten more than you’ll ever know about the program. I’ve met and talked with a lot of past players and continue to talk with the players of today,enjoying every minute that I’m with them.

    In conclusion JB,deep down I feel Syracuse will at some point in the future win another National Championship,becoming a constant member of the new playoff format. I see them winning the Atlantic Division as well as the ACC League Championship. I see them beating teams like Clemson and FSU again and the rest of the ACC teams. I see them returning to the time when they where winning 11-2,10-3,8-5. As Terry would say,Ron your nothing but a homer,and he’s right I am.

    Terry,I apologize for carring on here.

    Everyone needs to realize that we are all Cuse fans here. All have differing views on the state or direction of the program right now, but all that matters is this Pitt game coming up. I hope every one of you shows up and shows these kids your support, especially if you think they’re overmatched, because true or not, they go out and try their hardest, and they’re wearing Orange when they do. JB I get your point. Ron, I get yours as well. Terry… Lol just kidding. For now support the team. We have two more tough games against noble opponents with their own pride to consider. You think Addazzio doesn’t want to take a big chop at SU after not sniffing him for our job? He sent his kid to SU and pulled him out too. Pitt is a must win. Get 6. Beat a strong regional recruiting opponent. Do a lot if good. Lets talk coaching dismissals after the season. 14 class will strengthen from what I read. Stay true until then. Go Orange

  25. OrangeCrush27 Avatar
    OrangeCrush27

    Yeah these next two games are very important, not in terms of just bowl eligibility but in regional recruiting. Good point Malone. We need to beat PITT. I think BC will be a tougher game.

    7-5 wouldnt be a bad record to have in the first year of the ACC.

  26. Terry Avatar
    Terry

    I don’t see SU beating BC. Too many memories for BC against SU. Pitt’s different. If SU beats Pitt is bowling(even though a lousy bowl at that)then. Lose the Pitt game forget it. BC wants to put SU in the dumpster. These two plus Rutgirls are SUs major competition on recruiting in NE!! Lose both games and SU will rank high 60’s with big defections to other schools too. It happened this year and LAST year to!! So hang on!!
