Syracuse Football Receives Verbal from 3-Star Commit Marquise Blair

The Class of 2015 gains a defensive commit with Marquise Blair’s verbal.

The commits just keep coming in.

Safety Marquise Blair is the latest recruit to join the 2015 Orange football class. The verbal commitment now brings the new Orange class to 15 members.

At 6’3”, 180 lbs., the 3-star recruit is predicted to play safety, but could make a switch to outside linebacker if he has success in the weight room. He also played wide receiver for his high school, catching 11 touchdowns last season. Blair becomes the first safety in the 2015 class that has seen many new commits within the past month. Purdue is the other FBS school to offer Blair.

The Ohio native originally excelled at basketball more than football but has shifted his focus after seeing the potential he has on the gridiron. His coach says he could play as a nickelback but has the athletic ability to move around. Syracuse loves versatility and Blair could see the field early depending on Syracuse’s needs.

Blair is yet another Midwest recruit the Orange has snagged ever since Scott Shafer and his staff took over. Seniors Prince-Tyson Gulley and Micah Robinson are the only other Syracuse football players from the state of Ohio.

The 2015 recruiting class is stacked with offensive line recruits. Blair becomes only the fifth defensive commit of the class. Dana Levine, Anthony Giudice and Brandon Ginnetti are the three defensive line commits, while Shyheim Cullen rounds out the defense as a linebacker. The defense lost former commit CB Davante Davis at the end of May.

It is important to note that players switch around often at Syracuse between offensive and defensive positions once they get to school primarily based on size and playing time. A good example is tight end-turned-defensive end Ron Thompson, who made the switch for the Orange during the 2013 offseason. Former Orange Jay Bromley, who led the Orange defensive line last year, said he expects Thompson to have a breakout season for Syracuse.

Blair is a solid addition for Syracuse who already has a surprising number of commits considering it is only June. With all the uncertainty of commits keeping their word, Syracuse at least has the numbers to keep confident before they sign their letters of intent.

It’s great to have a player like Marquise Blair commit to the Orangemen. Looking forward to seeing him play over the next few years. So I’d like to welcome Marquise Blair to the Orangenation, your going to really enjoy your next 4 years here.

I’d like to ask a couple of questions,Coach Shafer said that we’re at 17 reecruits for the class of 2015. 3* CB Lamar Dawson is waiting and will commit to the class of 2015. Does that mean we have another opening for the class of 2014?

Do you have any information on the SECRET RECRUIT that has given the CUSE a SILENT VERBAL?

News gets better and better…these are kids we never even got to seriously consider Cuse! ACC and Shafer appear to be the difference. Hats off to their recruiting efforts….hope they hold on to the commits.
Come on SU Administration.. Get on board..support the Program..get building!

You know, Ron just said something I sometimes forget..or just take for granted. These commits are in for the best four/five years of their lives. Cuse is a wonderful place to attend college…a great place to start your adulthood! I graduated in 69′ and thank God Syracuse would have me! A good education, a great social life, four great years as an SU Swimmer, a proud Block S lettermen and a lifetime of being…yes.. One of the Orangemen!
Welcome guys…you’ve made a Great Decission!

From my earlier post in the original Shy Cullem commit article:

Shy is a LB, and the word is that he’ll likely be an OLB at Cuse. He hits hard and is more a run stopper and blitzer than a pass coverage guy. He has issues or concerns with grades, and apparently that is what scared BC away. I heard Miami had good interest, but they were concerned with his strong lean to SU (maybe smoke, but that’s what I heard). Kid wanted Miami,(nostalgic for their old 80s-90s days) and mom wanted BC (close to home)but all seemed to be very excited and impressed with SU through the recruiting process.
Today’s commit from the Safety Marquise Blair from Ohio is more Terry’s speed (4.4 speed, 6’3″ 180 lbs) My worry with this commit is in part the timing. It seems the staff was expecting/hoping for a visit from Daiquan Kelly the big safety (6’3″ 200 lbs) from Union City in NJ. He didn’t make it and claimed car trouble as his reason. He was at PSU the next day and it seems we are a backup for him (he has no PSU offer, and me be content to go to Rutgers if it doesn’t happen and we are full). It could be that our coaches decided to move on from him, and took Blair’s commit.

Giudice is on the same team as Chris Clark. Both are NJ guys that go to prep school in CT.

Jake Pickard is a TE with 3 stars from NJ that visited the campus Sunday and had a positive outlook. He was coming from Ohio State. I don’t know if he has an OSU offer, but I know he has an Oregon offer. I think we could make that one happen.

Strong rumor is that we have a silent from Daivon Ellison, a safety/corner from Don Bosco in NJ. Not sure if that will bring in DT Ryslik as well, but not sure if we’ve offered. He wants PSU too, but like us and RU as options.

The two NY products on D that we want (Q Sheppard and A Robinson?) seem to be absent, and both like RU it seems. Blech.

On the Kelly note, we are in his top four right now, and he is supposed to visit this Sunday. I am curious to see what happens. I think this Sunday is move in day for the class of ’14. I could see the staff being distracted by that. Kelly is still a good get if we can get him. I have heard we are still in good position, but he is a guaranteed flip if PSU calls. Kills me that his position coach is a former SU player.

Position switches are a common occurrence in football.Syracuse might have the biggest switch that did not happen.” The late Joe Szombathy wanted to switch a running back to a lineman. That running back was Jim Brown. Later in his life he admitted his ill advised thinking. One of the best switches ever was also at Syracuse running back John Mackey was switched to tight -end and that took huh to the NFL HOF. In addition Larry Czonka was a line backer before he became the great fullback that teamed with Floyd Little in our backfield and later with the Miami Dolphins.

Connecting dots, but Kelly could commit on Sunday or Monday. He tweeted that he’d make his chou=ice after this weekend. The prevailing thought is that he is looking to hold a spot with us as they are filling up fast, but will take a scheduled visit to Mich St. as well as hold out hope for a PSU offer. He seems he will be a tough one to hold on to. I am very curious about LB Fox out of St. Peters in NJ. I have heard good things about him and he had a very good visit, made him think.

Hey guys, I’m hearing that Daivon is a silent commit but also a soft commit because in his heart(sry guys) he wants to play for RU or PSU. I think Flood is missing the ball on Ellison. This kid really wants to don scarlet and they are ignoring him. As far as Kelly, it’s really down to RU and the Cuse. He visits RU on Saturday and Cuse on Sunday. Then he makes his choice after the Cuse visit.

Mademan, gonna give you a pass here. I agree that Kelly is not sold on SU, but it isn’t RU either. He wants PSU and Mich. St. second. He is looking to lock up a spot and continue sniffing around for what he thinks is a better offer. As for Ellison, what makes you think he wants RU and they’re not into it? RU needs ties to schools like Bosco too. Sorry to say it, but RU is in for trouble in the B1G. Coaches at RU are on the hot seat. Players know this.

As talent by the eye these latest gets are promising, but still not prime rib. Maybe Strip steak. That better than hamburger from the last few years!! SU will always be in the play game with recruits!! Until they can constantly win with good numbers(not 6/7 wins but 7/8 wins)!! I still feel SU gets the crumbs from the higher programs. And one issue has shown its ugly head again=grades!! Better programs have the luxury to gamble of grade poor talent. SU has to stop that attitude with the poor grade gamble and the end say oh well that’s CFB!! But the talent looks the part better for now. But win HCSS and that look will return to SU!!

DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS FROM PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!

Stick with Blair. He will be 190lbs next year and 200 lbs when he’s ready to contribute at SU. Looks like Ellison is ready to verbal. The key guy in this class seems to be Picard. I don’t think he will cross the country to play at Oregon. I would like to see him in orange. We are good at TE for a few years with Parris and Moore. Enoicy is new and needs two years to get bigger. Picard could be a long-term TE contributor to team up with Enoicy.

Agree I like Pickard. He seems to like us, just not sure he loves us. Kelly would be nice, but he is looking more and more like a head case.
Terry, the academic conversation you bring up unfortunately flies right in the face of almost every other argument you’ve made here. the thing with that as I understand it is this; High talent prospects with questionalble academics are passed over by football factories because they are selectors and can find a similar player without the qualification concerns. These players who are factory caliber (3-4 star?) Don’t get the offers from the factories, and that affects their star ranking (like it or not, written or implied). We pick up an academic question mark because it is one of the best ways for us to get 3-4 star talent that is being advertised as NR-2 star talent. We can’t get great academics and talent as they are not only rare, but in that, committed to factories. If we want pure academic performers, we should look historically at Northwestern, Vandy, Duke, and the like. Stanford has just started coming out of that shell as well, and while I think we wasnt to consider ourselves in that group on all factors (academics and football) all of them are very recent players, with the possible exception of Stanford… where Shafer coached. These guys know what they’re doing. Do you want talent? If so, a program like ours needs to take some risks. Shafer is saying he will take those risks on the academic side rather than the character side. Hard work can overcome the academic issues. A bad attitude is a bad attitude. You want low to no risk academics? You’d better get used to being the historic equivalent of the other teams I’ve mentioned here. That’s why Cutcliff has struggled, Harbaugh left, and Franklin is now at PSU instead of Vandy.

malone lots of pie filing on your homer face too!! malone I thought your had a mind/brain, but I wonder. Any one with a know how knows SU gambles on poor grades related to talent at times and some of that talent of 2 star talent!! Its not mainly about Academics is about if they qualify to play and not rob a spot from a player need for the program!!!! If they qualify let them play. But don’t offer if you know they probably not qualify!! Character is academics as well. We all remember that study time and the time and manner each one of us got through that. A non-qualifier right off the bat should not come close to an offer from SU. But that has been done in the Past. Also intelligence of the college FB game is nothing to sneeze at either.

I got laughed off the bar stool a while ago when I offered this idea!! Lets teach non-qualifiers to get educated. That would mean players of poor qualify types or others that are just are learning disabled. Teach them (time limit ???)every day living habits, Banking, dealing with the public, relationships, job security, art of a good deal. Look this kids just get swept away at times. To other programs lower than DIV 1!! Give them the chance to at least learn from a university system. 33% success would be beneficial fort society!! What is an education for, its for improvement of oneself, through the help of others. The brain is a terrible thing waste and some of these kids are thrown away because of it!!

Terry, SU actually does some of what you are talking about above. I believe it was something that Marrone brought in, but Shafer has continued. That said, I am not sure you understood what I was saying. Some of the 2 stars we are taking a chance on as non-qualifiers, are actually 3 star or maybe higher, but their lack of big offers leads evaluators to think there is something wrong with their game. Look at the LB we are bringing in from GA. Jonathan Thomas. Oklahoma wanted to bring him in pretty badly, but his grades made them look at one of the other players of similar caliber they had on the hook. He slips to us because we took the chance that he could improve and qualify, and he did. Now we have the kid Oklahoma wanted, but we got. Without the qualification issues, we don’t even get a sniff from the kid. He is a 3 star because of a lack of offers and you are not seeing that as you get upset about not getting 3-4 star players. I am not being a homer, I hate that we have to do that to get competative talent, but I would rather do that then be the next Vandy or Duke or NW, who can’t win a game but never has academic issues or graduation issues. Rice is another example.

I guess 5’10” 165 lb kicker Sterling Hofricher out of (Armwood HS) Seffner Fl. got Coach Shafers message about making his mind up quick because if he didn’t he would fill the position with someone else.

Sterling Hofricher committed to the Orangemen making him the 16 recruit to do so. What I don’t understand is how the recruiting websites/pundits give him only a two star rating. Here’s a kid that kicks the ball into the end zone on a regular basis, can kick a field goal from 55 yards out and they only give him two stars. What’s wrong with this picture?

Are they trying to say that there are kickers out there that are better that can kick the ball futher that deserve a 4 or 5 star rating? Terry you wonder why a guy like me has trouble understanding/accepting the damn star system. Here’s your answer, this is plain ole BS.

Welcome to the ORANGENATION Sterling and thank you for committing to the Orangemen.

Believe me when I tell you that you’re not going to regret that decision. Your’e going to love the school and everything it has to offer. Congratulations

    @Malone;

It’s hard for some to visualize the size of the new IPF building that’s now being built. I was at my granddaughters softball game last night and tried and came to the conclusion that the building is going to be huge.

My question is when I’m setting in by seat at the dome would it be fair to say that all of the green from side to side and from one end to the other, will be under a roof that extends half way up the third level of seating? Just wondering.

  17. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

Well it kind of looks like Terry was on the money when he shared with us his concerns about recruits meeting the academic standards for admission to Syracuse. (WR)K J Williams and (DB)Treevon Prater FAILED TO MEET THOSE REQUIREMENTS and won’t be coming to Syracuse in August.

On the other hand when you lose one you gain another player. Syracuse got it’s 17 recruit today in 3* 6’2″ 175 lb (S) Chris Frederick out of Cedar Grove (HS) Ellenwood GA.

What happens if the class gets filled to the max with 25 recruits and we have some highly sought after recruits from Florida,NJ,NYC,LI,Ga wanting to commit to the Cuse after their high school season if finished? Decisions, decisions, decisions,it looks like things are getting really interesting on the hill.

I can’t remember ever when Syracuse had 19 verbals from recruits before the end of June. I’m counting the recruit that gave his silent verbal and (CB)Lamar Dawson deferring his commitment until 2015.

That is not the toughest part. In those areas of the entire world the roads (the 2nd image from the stop isn’t the worst-case) and also the traffic tradition can cause a great deal of tension (and work to keep everybody safe and content). Likewise some drunk passengers (primarily person) don’t make your life simpler. A driver would not get so a lot of “interest” from drunk, or simply some selfconfident losers as being a woman that is attractive.
