Follow The Fizz on Twitter for the latest SU football news

This past week George McDonald continued his work in Florida and offered scholarships to corner back CJ Maybin from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale and offensive tackle William Gordon from Norland High School in Miami. The SU offers were the first Division I offers for both players.
The only other interest Maybin currently has is from the University of South Florida. So why has SU offered? Maybin stands at 6’4’’, which is three inches taller than any other cornerback the Orange has on its roster. SU’s secondary is traditionally shaky and it appears that the Syracuse coaches are willing to sacrifice a little bit of raw talent for size. Last week, the Orange received a verbal commitment from 6’3’’ safety/cornerback Davante Davis. Scott Shafer clearly wants bigger defensive backs and is making it a priority to lure these players to his program.
At 6’4’’ and 318 pounds, Gordon also possesses some serious size. He is only a junior in high school but would be the fourth largest offensive lineman on Syracuse’s roster if he were to join the team tomorrow. From watching his tape, it is clear to see that Gordon excels at sealing the edge for his running backs. He creates massive spaces for rushers because of his great strength. Gordon needs to work on his speed, however. His 5.89 40-yard dash time is below average for a tackle that will need to make blocks in the open field on screen plays. This is why he has not been recruited more heavily. According to scout.com though, Gordon has worked tremendously hard to transform himself into a Division I football player.
With five Florida recruits coming to Syracuse this fall and two verbal commitments already this spring from Florida natives Devante Davis and running back Gerald Robinson, George McDonald is really improving the program. Players who come to Syracuse from the south are important because either they have offers from SEC schools or compete against players that do. The level of competition is higher than in most other regions in the US. Anytime a player from Florida is linked with Syracuse it is almost certainly good news.

Finally HCSS and staff see that taller DB/S’s are a must in college football.
This OL player is huge but rather slow. Most of the players he went up against were much smaller as well. Its usually like that in HSFB!! In the DIV 1 class of ball OL talent a 5.9 40 would get eaten up quickly!!
Instead of the shotgun method of last year(didn’t work) and this year’s shot gun method I wonder if it will really work?? But really it should be called the machine gun method instead!!
After the embarrassing awful early “OUTS” by the SUBB and SULAX programs the SUFB program doesn’t look so bad-HUH!!
DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF POSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!
It all comes down to trusting in your coaches, who identify, recruit and offer players. Shafer, McDonald and company either have your faith or they do not. IMO they have my belief that they know what they are doing. The proof will be in the pudding. Go get em George.
John is on the money. I’d love to see high profle talent, but its not a reality so we have to ride with the staff. Let them seek out players that they can help cultivate and grow.
But I am with Terry on the db front. While hard to duplicate, teams like the Seahawks have already led to teams attempting to draft larger defensive backs and teams attempting to recruit larger dbs. Now if we get these guys coached up we might be on to something. Our secondary has not been the best but imagine in a couple of years having a couple of big corners, a ball hawk at FS and a legit thumper bringing pain at SS.
As for the lineman, he is a jr and while his time is considered slow for what the SU offense is trying to do, he may be worth keeping tabs on.
JH its just smells like desperation on HCSS and staff!! Hitting everything from 4 stars to NR to talent that fit the size ratio but athletically they don’t have it!!
All through the draft they mentioned tall(er) DB/S’s is what NFL teams want. DAAAAAAA!! Trust is a word that is earned!! After last year and their shot gun approach to recruiting, I’m not totally in their camp. Because 80% of those that they approached never sniffed SU!! I hope I’m wrong!! But if not you know I’ll bring it up again! LOL!!
I’m not a MCDonald fan…but I want us working the Fl talent. He has always claimed he had a Fl connection. I haven’t seen it! Everyone is recruiting down here. You have to cultivate the coaches and gain some street credit in the local football community. You have to be seen..you have to take some kids the Coaches are trying to help.. You have to work with them. This activity sounds like their trying to get in the mix. Their is gold around these beaches!
Shafer and his staff have no choice at this point to be a little to much shot gun in their approach. We are looking up..we’re not an SEC powerhouse..we’re not an anything.
They got to get bigger..sounds like they get that too! For years you have seen the real programs grabbing the size and we get the 5’9″ 170 cb or 6′ 280 OT…bring in the size and coach em up!
SU IS GOING AFTER GUYS WITH POTENTIAL. THEY ARE NOT HIGHLY RATED YET BUT IF THEY ARE COMMITED TO HARD WORK SOME OF THESE GUYS WILL BE LEGIT STARTERS BY THEIR JUNIOR YEAR. THEY HAVE ONE MORE YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL, A REDSHIRT YEAR, A FRESHMAN YEAR AND A SOPHMORE YEAR. THAT’S 4 YEARS OF
GETTING STRONGER, QUICKER, FASTER AND SMARTER. FIVE YEARS AGO SU LOST OUT ON 5-STAR OT ERIC SHRIVE FROM SCRANTON WHO WENT TO PENN STATE THEN ON TO NOWHERE WHILE NEW YORK’S 2-STAR JOHN URSCHEL STARTED FOR 2 YEARS AT PENN STATE. AT THE SAME TIME SU SIGNED UNHERALDED JUSTIN PUGH WHO BECAME A 1ST ROUND NFL PICK AND A 1ST YEAR STARTER WITH THE GIANTS. SEAN HICKEY MAY BE RIGHT BEHIND HIM. ROB TRUDO AFTER THAT. IF MACKY COULD BE A DEPENDABLE FBS CENTER FROM WHERE HE STARTED, THE POSSIBILITIES ARE THERE FOR OUR RECRUITS.
