The year of booming success may not be in 2014, but 2015 is definitely close.
It starts with recruiting. To be good, there has to be solid recruiting to get the next big name in the door. Considering the number of changes going into the 2013 season, the Orange showed potential. It showed the nation it could go 6-6 and win a bowl game even with a new style of Syracuse football.
That sets the stage for this year. Syracuse was young last year. Fortunately, after a successful year with a young team, most of the guys are returning, with even better young talent right behind. The national powerhouse teams have the nation’s best players—the 4- and 5-star recruits. Syracuse seems to always be in the middle of the recruiting game, with its mostly 3-star recruits. Here’s the plus on that: these players are secret weapons.
They are not big-name players like Jameis Winston or even Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins. The Syracuse program gets the job done and the players are good because the stars are just a representation, not a true indicator. This is something that makes Shafer and his staff such great coaches. They take players and turn them all into weapons. His players come up when it matters most. For instance, Hunt does not really seem to have is a favorite receiver or target. This is a sign he is comfortable with everyone, and comfort is a huge target for success.
They prove to Shafer and the rest of the coaches that they were smart for giving them playing time because they do not disappoint.
One of the best examples of this comes from the final game of the 2013 season against Boston College when Josh Parris connected with Terrel Hunt on a touchdown pass to send SU into bowl eligibility. The best thing for Syracuse is that it is always another player doing something big and not the same receiver, defender, or running back over and over again on consecutive plays. 
This program is really close. A bowl victory in the first year of a new era is a solid start. The second year gets underway in two weeks, but these secret weapons on the gridiron are only going to improve with time, and they are young. Syracuse fans can expect to see a similar style of play, and a number of different players making an immediate impact.
Syracuse is almost there. Right now, it is still floating around as an average team. Sooner or later, in the next few years, the Orange will learn different strategies. The first year was a good start for rebuilding.

The talent is getting better for sure. For now SU might only squeeze in a few top(4 star) types. But not this year. I have said numerous times I dream of a good season not season(s) for SU. Every 4/5 years that 9/10/11 win season will appear. But the next season back to reality like 6/7/8 wins. That’s realistic. With superior talent comes superior seasons. The hope and prays must stop to(2 star and NR’s) too!! Plus coaching too. I’m concerned about the new coaches here at SU this year. Were they brought in to coach up or recruit up or both. I’ll know at the end of the season. You can smell the gig skin in the air. And this year should be interesting to say the least. Just need to improve even if a little. 6-6 again is the best I feel. Mainly because of average D-line and average QB play. Injuries and 4-8 or healthy team and healthy coaching maybe 8-4. We got our season tickets and the grand kids are stoked for some Dome action. If SU does good I have relatives in NC that offered housing.
DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU! THE NCAA DID!!
Terry, I think many are suggesting 7-5 or 8-4. I think 8-4 would be a dream (and maybe an unlikely one, but not out of the question) but 7-5 feels right to me. I don’t expect to see 10 wins every year from here on out, but I don’t see why we can’t come to expect 9 if we keep working hard at the recruiting and upgrading our brand/facilities.
Terry when you come up for game at the dome,come early and go to Manly Field House and view the progress that’s being made on the new IPF building. You and the grandkids will be amazed at the size of it.
I would say the next thing to happen would be bringing in the masons and start doing the brick work on the lower portion of the building.
From today’s paper, according to HCSS, AJ Long is winning the competition for thee back up spot!!!!!! I have not seen him trow live, but from all the reports on this site, he looks to be behind the other two in terms of arm strength and getting the ball down the field.

I read the same article and am just as confused as you are. Really hard for me to understand why Shafer would come out and make a statement like that and put it into the local papers.
If he really thinks that Long is better than either Wilson or Kimble,then I see both Wilson and Kimble transfering out at the end of the year. Then if that does happen I hope Alin Edouard returns to campus and takes control of the QB situation for 2015

Ron I can see that too. I felt like Wilson was the odd man out prior to the summer. I felt like he’d go an transfer and have good success elsewhere(I’m thinking maybe get an immediate starting gig at an FCS school). Now that Long may have leap frogged both RS freshmen, maybe both guys feel like their days may be numbered at SU. Kimble could probably go somewhere closer to home and get a look. I’m disappointed in Kimble’s fall the most since coming out of the spring game some folks were high on him. Plus his mobility atleast made him viable in the offensive scheme.
On the flip side, I’m happy that AJ Long(the flag bearer for his class), has been playing well. I don’t want him to unseat Hunt and kind of wish we could preserve a RS year for him, but maybe he suceeds Hunt as the starter? I felt like between Long and Eduaord, Long would end up sticking at qb with Alin making a position change. Now we may need both cats to stay at the qb spot. In the matter of a week the offensive depth has seen some shifting.

I’m putting my trust in the coaching staff on this one,because I just don’t see in AJ Long what the coaching staff is seeing.
It looks like the 2014/15 is going to be another long season and is going to leave fans like me wondering what the hell is going on.
I just read where Ishaq Williams and 3 other starters were dismissed from Notre Dame for academic fraud! Ishaq was the big 4 star recruit from Brooklyn that chose the Golden dome over the Orange.
Now, I am not trying to kick a leprechaun when he is down, but, this is the thing, that some of these kids don’t consider: Going to a school like Notre Dame and you don’t play as opposed to coming to the Cuse and having a better opportunity to play!!!
One could argue that a Notre Dame degree goes further than a Cuse degree, especially when we were just voted the #1 Party school in the country.
My point: Over the past 10 years, let’s look at the 4 star NY recruits who didn’t pick the Orange: how did their careers turn out? I think too many of these kids are blinded by the big lights and miss out!
The backup QB race is far from over. Regarding Ishaq Williams, I feel bad for the kid. It will be hard for him to transfer with the fraud baggage. Who knows what would have happened if he went to SU. He probably would have had an opportunity to play sooner but that doesn’t guarantee success. Either way, an NFL career is not in the cards now. What a waste.

This was one of the games I said Syracuse would upset. It’s looking better by the minute folks.

This year’s recruiting is better than last year and I fully expect next year to be even better The talk used to be that Orange football was DOA. Thats not the case and we are getting closer to taking down one of these elite ACC teams and moving upwards in bowl quality and revenue. he 2016 recruiting year should give us our first 5 star player and we move up from there. It takes time to get out of the hole that GRob put us in. Dr. Gross really screwed thee pooch with that hire. Marrone righted the ship and Shafer will put us on the charts again as a power. We,the Orange are now recruiting with confidence. George McDonald and Bobby Acosta along with Shafer himself are doing a great job bringing in quantity and now quality will be the next goal.
I said this elsewhere on another Cuse related blog site, but its kind of bittersweet about the ND dismissals. I do want ND to be a good squad so that a win over them carries some weight. I mean in addition to Williams(who I think was a starter on their current depth chart), they lose their best returning receiver as well on an offense that will definitely need him. Sure they got some good talent behind Daniels(including a big receiver in David Robinson’s son), but he is a big loss. So if ND struggles, maybe a win over them might not be as big.
The main reason why I’m not so happy about the dismissal is that guys like Ishaq from NYC had the potential to do a lot of good by succeeding.
If this scenario is possible, Ishaq should transfer to an FCS school with a solid academic standing or one of the HBCUs in the mid atlantic or south(the MEAC type schools) and sit out this season and try to get himself academically and mentally in shape for next year. Ofcourse, if thats possible in terms of athletic eligibility and the like. If he went to a Howard, a Hampton a Norfolk State, he’d be a bus ride or short flight from getting back to NYC if he needed to. In the case of Howard, he’d still be receiving a quality education. And since its a lower tier football level, maybe he’d be able to dominate the competition en route to mid-late round draft consideration. I suggest taking a year off from football because I think he needs to take a long hard look at himself and get himself in order. I’m not sure what the academic integrity infractions mean for him and his academic record as a whole, but he needs to settle that before thinking about football.
