Room For One More: New Jersey Recruit Daivon Ellison Commits

Syracuse’s jam-packed Class of 2015 picks up a 3-star defensive stud from New Jersey.

The Orange received another commit to its already packed 2015 recruiting class. Daivon Ellison, a 3-star cornerback, pledged Syracuse last night.

Syracuse continues to reel in the recruits after a summer to remember. Ellison, who played for national powerhouse Don Bosco in high school, was between Syracuse and Rutgers but decided to come to upstate New York instead of staying in his home state of New Jersey.

At 5’9”, 175 pounds, Ellison does have some work to do in the weight room. We have mentioned before how big a difference size can make, especially against ACC receivers. Added size can do wonders for Ellison, who will join Gerald Robinson and Andrew Spence as true cornerbacks in the new recruiting class.

This is yet another win for a Syracuse program that is trying to push its way back into New Jersey. Tight ends coach Bobby Acosta, responsible for recruiting in the Jersey region, has been trying to expand New Jersey recruiting in the Shafer era and has been fairly successful in building a pipeline back into the Garden State.

In fact, two of the top recruits in the 2015 class, Daiquan Kelly and Dontae Strickland, are both from New Jersey. Rutgers heavily recruited Strickland as well, so it is not a coincidence that Syracuse is going after players who have considered the Scarlet Knights. Ellison has gone on record saying that he had interest in playing with Strickland collegiately, which clearly shows a Jersey pipeline in Syracuse’s recruiting. With Syracuse’s move to the ACC and Rutgers’ move to the Big Ten, it will be very interesting to see what New Jersey recruits prioritize in terms of program strengths when deciding between two local schools.

With the 2015 class almost at full capacity, recruiting should be slow for the upcoming months. However, with recruits constantly changing their minds, de-commitments should be something to look out for as well, especially toward the end of the season.

With less than a week before the start of the 2014 season, Syracuse football does not have to be worried about recruiting with an already packed recruiting class.

Coach Bobby Acosta strikes again. Coach Acosta has brought in more recruits from NJ/LI/NYC/PA areas in his first year than Rob Moore had done in his entire career at Syracuse. I guess it all depends on how you look at things and how hard you want to be successful. Having a posititve attitude towards these recruits certainly helps bringing them home to Syracuse.

Welcome to the Orange Nation Daivon Ellison. I hope you have a great career here and you’re going to find that the Syracuse Fans are just as loving and supportive of their football players as anyone in the country.

Thank you Coach Acosta for the energy and commitment that is needed to bringing the best recruits to Syracuse.

Definitely happy to see the secondary spots being addressed. Between the 14 and 15 classes we should have a foundation for the next few years in the secondary.

Ellison’s size is not a reflection of his ability to play CB. He has excellent speed. As long as he has the ability to stay on the inside hip of the receiver he will be an effective defender. Speed and technique are everything at the CB spot in the secondary. If the CB is in that position he doesn’t need to be tall to defend against the pass. In fact if he is there, he will be in a perfect posit to turn nd intercept any ball thrown a bit short if the pass is to the outside of hr receiver a slight jump should be enough to either deflect the ball or distract the WR enough to miss the catch. Job is done perfectly . √áoaching the position to a physically able player is the real issue.

well our cornerback position will have plenty of depth now for next year, and loving the fact he was from new jersey.

So this is a strong player despite his stature. All I have heard from his High School staff is how hard a hitter he is. I think the bigger win here is getting in with Don Bosco. They are a premiere program that is consistently stocked with D1 P5 talent. They are consistently top 5 in NJ, play a national schedule (play #1 Aquinas this year I believe), and have the respect of all the other top NJ schools. If we can gain their trust, that can open doors to their peer schools, like Bergen and Paramus Catholic, St. Peter’s prep, and St. Joe’s Montvale. Hate to say I told you so, but I called this one months ago. This was the silent commit.

I too like the fact that we got a recruit out of Don Bosco Prep. Just amazing on how fast things can change. You’ve earned the right to say “SEE,I TOLD YOU THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN”.

Now I want to share something with all of you who doubted my prediction on austin Wilson being the backup QB.

“But for now, if Hunt goes down, Wilson will be the one jogging in to replace him”.

God for bid something bad happens to Terrel Hunt,I’m just letting you know I ‘m not wishing any harm to him. If he does get injured in a game and Austin Wilson comes in at QB,he will be the #1 QB for the next 4 years. Book it and take it to the bank.

Ron I’m a strong fan of Moore and always will be. He was brought in to COACH not to recruit!! Your a homer no doubt so you should know that. He was an all time NFL WR and that brought attention to SU as well. So lighten up on him. He does not need my support his play on the field of SU and the NFL showed that. So far Acosta has shown little. His players have not touched as ball yet for SU!! CALM THE #$@& down Ron!! Rob Moore will always be one of SU’s best. And I do agree with what he said at that time he said it. The NJ people think their talent pool is like FL, CAL, Texas or PA. NJ has talent but not near like they think. The catholic schools rule the state and sometimes they think their poo don’t stink!!

DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU. THE NCAA DID!

Terry your getting your panties all tied up in knots and are starting to choke you a little.

I loved Rob Moore as a college and NFL player. He represented Syracuse well and will stand by him no matter what. When it came to recruiting the players from the tri state area I felt he was in over his head and the negative comments he made and put in the papers didn’t help any. If you compare Bobby Acosta to Rob Moore,Bobby Acousta win’s the comparison.

I also feel that Rob Moore was having problems communicating with the WR’s during his time at Syracuse and feel it was the main reason why they weren’t catching passes over the last couple years.

My critizism isn’t of Rob Moore’s playing abilities Terry,it’s based solely on his lack of recruiting good talent,no matter where they’re from.

Nice to see that you haven’t lost your touch. As Jimmy V said,”Don’t Give Up,DON’T EVER GIVE UP”. Glad to have you back and in form Terry. having you back has made the upcoming football season complete. Couldn’t ask/wish for anything better to happen.

Pats on the backs to Ron and Malone. I really like Wilson, but I admit, I thought he’d be the odd man out stylistically. I said it repeatedly that I figured Kimble would be the back up, Long the third and Wilson on the outside looking in. Figured he would then transfer out(to a FCS school) and light it up en route to being a sleeper small school NFL prospect. I’m glad that he has fought his was up to the top reserve spot and would feel fairly confident in him to hold it down if Hunt got hurt. Now the fuzziness could come into play in a couple of seasons.

Assuming that Hunt does progress and remains the man for this and next year, we will have a hotly contest battle for the top spot after Hunt leaves. I kind of wish we had a Charly Loeb type on the roster so that we could redshirt a guy like Long and then stagger the eligibility of our qbs. Its too damn early to be thinking that far ahead, but I’d love to get another face of the program type of guy in the 16 recruiting cycle. But back to this year.

    I’m FIRED UP!

Moore again was brought in to coach not recruit. What he said was right on at that time. The team and coaches have changed for the good, since then-no doubt. The prima donnas that Rob spoke about never came to SU. He was saying the same thing I and HCSS have said for years. If you don’t want SU go else where. Our boot will get you going. A recruiter he wasn’t for sure but the local NJ,LI and NY kids had attitudes toward SU and Rob put it out about them. GREAT FOR HIM!! Plus the talent he had to coach with then and know Ron was night and day. Moore knows football!! Ron you don’t know recruiting as of yet!

  11. Ron Avatar

I guess from what your telling me terry,Rob Moore couldn’t multi task and handle more than one responsibility while at Syracuse. if I’m paying a coach $125-150K a year he’d better learn to do what’s asked of him and get it done.

You’ve told me before, talking face to face with someone means nothing, well it means everything to me. When I do talk to the players I listen to what they have to say and watch their facial expressions when they show their excitement and build a consensus as to what might happen during the season based solely from those conversations. I know what type of player Syracuse goes after and I’m telling you this team is loaded with them.

I also learned a long time ago Terry that God made man from his own image and none of us are perfect. We all do things differently, some of us struggle to succeed while others have natural abilities that can’t be duplicated.

When Shafer and company gets a N/R 2* player, you with not knowing that person or knowing what type of player he’ll turn out to be,dismiss him like he’s garbage. I’ve often critized you for doing so in the past. You’ve also complained that we never get recruits out of the State or NYC/LI areas and when we do you say that the players aren’t good enough and Syracuse has wasted a scholarship. Last year you were telling us that the talent in NJ wasn’t that good.

Using your vision of what we should be trying to get here,I’m going to compare two players from the NYC area. One was rated a 4* DE by the name of Ishaq Williams who went to ND,played sparingly over his first 3 years and was going to start this year but got caught cheating on his academics and was dismissed from the team. The other player was a N/R DE by the name of Jason Bromley who came to Syracuse and started playing as a true freshman, gained weight and came weighing 285 lbs and was moved to the defensive line, graduated in 2013 weighing 305 lbs and was drafted by your NY Giants.

In short Terry we had a 4* and a N/R player coming from the down state area. One succeeded and one hasn’t lived up to his potential. Tell me which plsyer would you have on your team if you were the head coach?

But I guess your right again,I’ll never understand that damn recruiting process. Oh!!wait a minute,I take that guy that came from that DIII school that you doidn’t like. What’s his name? Oh I remember now it’s Bobby Acosta. The facts don’t lie Terry he’s kicking Rob Moore’s ass up and down and all over the tri state area. He’s got to be doing something a little differently, would you say? Maybe because he’s telling the kids the truth, stroking their ego’s and not voicing his displeasure in the local rag(PS)just might be doing the trick.

I’m sorry that I carried on again,I know you don’t like it when I do. But you know, now that I’ve said what I’ve said maybe if I went and applied I could get hired as a recruiter for the football program.

  12. Ron Avatar

    BK SU FB Fan;

When it’s all said and done and Terrel graduates and austin moves on to be the #1 QB. I’ll let you all know exactly what was said during conversations that I had with those two players and from other players that were on the team at the time.

Thanks for the pat on the back. Much appreciated.

After Terrys rant with his anti NJ/NYC bias you could probably use more than a pat on the back but Terry need’nt worry as we love him anyways lol…stay yourself Terry…Like it or not up north HSFB stops at the NJ/NY line..just ask the bigtime recruiters from Ala/Fla/Pennsy(PSU) and even Cali…All the NE schools wont win w/o some stain there in NJ.
