When Rutgers head football coach Kyle Flood told DA and Brian Jones on the Mojo Show on CBS Sports Radio that, “Rutgers has always been the football program over the last decade that moves the needle in New York,” he makes a valid point. Over the last decade the Scarlet Knights certainly have had a better football program than the Orange. However, the 2014 and 2015 recruiting classes for both teams indicate that Syracuse has the brighter future.
When Scott Shafer’s first official recruiting class arrives on campus in early August there will be four players who had offers from both SU and Rutgers and chose the Orange. (That number would be five if wide receiver KJ Williams had qualified academically.) Rutgers will also welcome four freshmen that received offers from both programs to their campus in the coming weeks. There is only one player (defensive end Jimmy Hogan) from New York or New Jersey that had offers from both schools and whom decided on Rutgers.
If the 2014 classes are an even split between the programs for recruiting, the work-in-progress 2015 classes clearly show that SU is currently the preferred football destination for recruits. Six players have received offers from both schools and five have chosen Syracuse. Both Rutgers and SU made the final list of schools for Ohio linebacker Troy Henderson Jr., New Jersey safety Daiquan Kelly and New Jersey running backDontae Strickland before they all chose SU. Taking New Jersey talent away from Rutgers is a massive accomplishment for the Syracuse football coaches.
Shafer has done an excellent job so far building on the success of Doug Marrone. The recruiting battles SU is winning over Rutgers shows that there is a changing of the guard for New York and New Jersey college football. Kyle Flood is right about the past, but Syracuse will be the better New York/New Jersey team in the future.

Rutgers will be the Big Ten doormat for many years to come. Syracuse’s future looks bright. Northeast recruits will realize this in the coming years and come to the Cuse – IMHO. GO ORANGE!
Really? Please Please don’t boost about recruiting classes in July. I know that doesn’t mean crap until signing day because if we had this same conversation around this last year, clearly RU was dominating recruiting. It’s almost sad now that I look back at our #18 ranking on this day. 3rd in the Big Ten and then it came crashing down. So please my friends enjoy it and hope it last because it can go downhill quickly with these kids.
Rutgers and their fans have long thought more of themselves than the rest of the athletic community. That might be normal but their insistence on pushing that opinion beyond reality remains to be a problem for themselves that causes disappointment. Quite frankly its fun to watch that frustration.
i firmly beleive syracuse is turning for better days ahead and as for rutgirls i could care. i never watch a rutgers game unless they play syracuse. i’m perfectly content watching syracuse games and other acc games.schafer and co will do great things here at syracuse and its going to be great because i’ll be at the dome..
Geographic fan rivalries like this are the reason why college football is a bittersweet. While providing compelling athletic storylines and games, the rapid expansion in pursuit of money has sidetracked the simple rivalry. Ironically enough, I wanted the Big East to expand to 12 teams prior to the deathblow exodus of Pitt and SU. I wanted the Big East to transform itself into a solid collection of eastern schools with a division of North East schools and a division of midwest, midatlantic and south east representation. Well, I can atleast live this pipe dream in my NCAA football 12 game where I have created a 14 team Big East with some FCS additions like Delaware and Villanova
I was a Big East fan and hated to see the break up. Thanks to the “Catholic 7” greed.what once was the very best in bball and football on the rise,is no more. Now with Louisville in the ACC,we have the “Big East 11” and I feel things will be just fine.

Football fan,I know of what you speak. We’re finally coming out of a black hole that’s lasted the last 10-15 year’s for Syracuse. We’ve endured the pain and agony,gone through all of jokes the fools out there were making about the Orangemen. For the Rutgers fans you’re about to find out just how bad it got here for us. Your fans are going to leave the team in droves,be prepared.
Syracuse is turning the corner,I hope in years to come we reap the recruiting benifits that’s been missed here for an awwwwwwwwwwwful long time.

I hate to say it but Malone is right. Rutgirls is down now, but a few SU mistakes and Rutgirls will be a stone in SU’s shoe again as in the last decade!!!!

Both Rutgers and Maryland have made a big mistake. To help the Big Ten get some Eastern tv audience they have doomed themselves to being doormates. Very few East Coast kids are going to go to Rutgers to “get” to travel to Wisconsin,Minnisota and all those other places they never heard of.
Rutgers has had a false sense of who they are for a long time. They are headed back to being a non event like they always were. A few respectable seasons a program/tradition does not create.
I for one am very happy and excited about ACC football, basketball and all the other sports. Hope we can get Ct into the mix. The conference makes sense both geographically and brings together great programs.
Remember and miss the Penn State/ Maryland/ West Virgina mix but Rotgers… Not. Even not so much…not at all!
The winds of change are blowing across the Northeast even stronger than what they were two years ago. College football getting really really interesting again.

Thank you Terry, that was big of you. despite our disagreements, you always call it like you see it. There is no way that RU in the B1G allows Flood to drive the program into the ground. Once they get some financial wiggle room, or the state allows them the money to get a real coach, they will be back in the mix (as long as they don’t make the mistake of going to the west coast for that coach). Their problem will be losening up the money to do it. The faculty and the state oversite may not allow it.
