Last week, Cleveland, Ohio linebacker Troy Henderson Jr. committed to Syracuse. He had narrowed his list down to three schools before announcing his future college. They were Syracuse, Nebraska and Rutgers. Henderson Jr. was going to announce his commitment on the 4th of July but Nebraska had just offered the day before and he wanted some time to think things over. The linebacker’s high school football coach as well as his family steered him away from the Cornhuskers:
“I was going to try and make it to Nebraska but I felt like Syracuse was the place for me and my family thought it too and talking it over with my coach he thought Syracuse was the best school for me too.”
Rutgers was also heavily linked with Henderson Jr., but he ended up choosing Syracuse because of the connection he made with linebacker coach Clark Lea:
“I have a better relationship with the staff of Syracuse. The linebackers coach, coach Lea was my recruiting area guy, just talking to him…and knowing that that’s the guy that’s potentially going to be coaching me up soon [was great]. With Rutgers the guy that was recruiting me coached wide receivers and I never really had a good relationship with the linebackers coach. That was the deciding factor [for] the the two.”
Henderson Jr. did not put too much stock into each school’s conference when making his decision. He admits to his Big Ten roots, but he says the ACC has its perks:
“It will be different…I kind of like the opportunity that it brings…I’ll hopefully be playing in warm climates besides Pitt and Boston College, that’s kind of cool.”
With a 3-star tag Henderson Jr. is an important addition to SU’s 2015 class. The fact that the Syracuse coaches were able to convince him to play football in the Dome instead of at Nebraska or Rutgers speaks volumes to how far the program has come in recent years.

I asked Troy about that and he said that it did not play into his college decision. He chose SU because he truly thought it would be the best fit for him.

I believe that and I prefer it. I want him to go to Syracuse because he wants to be there, not because his uncle went there. That said, we’ve struggled landing legacy kids, Rob Gronkowski is the first that comes to mind, but it’s as recent as last year with a big time Florida WR last recruiting cycle. To get a legacy, and especially one with his lineage in our sports lore, well that’s the most and best tasting icing we’ve had on a cake in a long time.
