Naesean “Naes” Howard was suspended indefinitely Monday by head coach Scott Shafer for a violation of training camp rules. The suspension means that Howard will not be able to travel with the team to the annual Fort Drum trip this week.
Said Shafer to the media yesterday:
‚ÄúI suspended Naes for the trip indefinitely with the goal being that when we get back on campus I‚Äôll bring him in, sit him down, see if he learned his lesson for breaking training rules.”
Howard is a true freshman who made the switch from running back to defensive back after the end of high school.
The suspension is not expected to last long, based on Shafer and Howard’s remarks after the announcement. It is very hard to speculate on what the violations may have been, but it should be just a hiccup for Howard, who was the first commit in the 2014 class. It also should not affect if he sees the field early or not due to the fact that Howard is third-string on the depth chart and needs time to get use to his position change. Although he did play some time on the defensive side of the ball in high school, Howard is expected to see little time on the field, if not redshirt this year.
We see time and time again how Scott Shafer likes to handle off-field issues. He does punish players either in the form of a suspension or not letting them on the team (although the NCAA and university might have more to do with the later). Shafer does, however, give his players and recruits a second chance after they have learned from their mistake. We saw the suspension route given to Ryan Norton who had to sit out a game last year after his arrest. On the recruiting side, Corey Cooper was¬†able to join the Orange¬†after going to prep school for a semester due to academic issues. Now Shafer will be put in the same situation with athlete Treevon Prater and K.J. Williams,¬†if he decides to¬†come back.”
Howard’s suspension will likely be a non-factor by the season’s start. It is however interesting to see how Shafer’s protocol when it comes to off-field problems.

After reading your article it looks like Naesean Howard committed a minor infraction that got him a weeks detention. The words “Suspended Indefinitely from Football” had me thinking it was serious and was about to be released from school.
I hope he learns from this mistake and realizes that he has another 4 years to go before graduation.
We all get “reality checks” from time to time in life.
It’s often not what we did so much as what it means to the people around us, how it affects them.
Being on a D1 team means having to curb what would otherwise being given free range, especially for a college freshman who is stepping out on his own for the first time.

I think you are both correct. Not sure what it was he did, but for a kid just starting out, it seems pretty harsh (not upset by this of course, especially since I don’t know what he did). Shafer is sending a message early. I say good for him and good for Naes, as he seems to realize he messed up, and is taking responsibility for it. He seems to be as dedicated to helping the team as ever before. Good on you HCSS and good for you Naes Howard.
Naesean Howard’s play during the Fan Fest scrimmage tells me that he will be a key factor of the defensive secondary for Syracuse,if not this year then his sophomore year for sure.
Still a problem of sorts. After all the whole team other than him acted properly!! Yes he’s kid and HCSS better sit him down hard. All major issues start small.

chris, I think the reason its not being revealed is because the violation falls under some privacy policy. Unless its something like an actual crime then I doubt we will know what he did. It might be something as simple as breaking a curfew or sneaking a girl in or something?
I’m ok with not knowing what the violation is because despite being public figures in the realm of sports, these are still private citizens/college kids. When we attended school we had the ability to move about somewhat anonymously(barring anything major). If we got into minor trouble our parents and any supervising adults were the ones who needed to know/dealt with the situation.
Howard messed up before…I think as a junior at West Gen?…so Shafer is going to have him on a short leash.
Looking at what is going on up at Fort Drum, could it be more likely that Howard would have learned something by NOT participating in any football activities but doing everything else at the base?
Learning the concept of team, that you have to be at YOUR best for the TEAM to be at its BEST…how the team needs for you to be ready and not violating training rules… just a thought.

By all accounts…Shafer knows what he’s doing, knows the kids and their individual situations. Headline a little over the top but let’s hope a good life lesson for this young man.

Side notes;
When your looking at the video notice the trees at the other end of the site,that’s where the other end of the building is going to be located. Notice when the camera scans the area the bleachers and trees to the left of the picture is gone. That’s where the “44 plaza” will be located. where the camera man is shooting from is standing in the parking lot where we do our tailgating. 215 ft wide X 405 ft long. Huge guys HUGH.

I stand by my statement that the silent verbal is Daivon Ellison. He didn’t pull the trigger. I don’t know why, but there are rumors that PSU is in his ear. Rumor is that they told him if he has a good season at Bosco, an offer could be in his future. That may have kept him from the announcement. That said, if he truely is a silent verbal, then he’s given his verbal already. Every one of these kids can be swayed or have a change of heart. Heck Corey Cooper just did about a year and a half after his verbal.
I don’t feel that confident about Milan, but we want him. Robinson is still a possibility, but many have reason to believe this won’t happen either (can’t pin him down for a visit). Qaadir Sheppard is still out there. I am not sure where we see him, as is Ryslick. I think our focus for the rest of the class will be on DL. All four of those fit the bill.

I went into Syracuse today and checked the progress on the new IPF building.
I tried all summer long to visualize the size of the building and couldn’t. They’ve put the steel girders up on three sides of the building. Seeing that today just amazed me. That building is going to be huge and I really mean huge. The workers were putting the final touches on the foundations for the entrance and the mens and womens soccer meeting rooms and I expect that they will pour concrete tomorrow.
I would also like to say that you were correct last fall when you told us that they would be using some of that money on other projects. As I traveled around campus today I did notice a lot of different projects getting worked on. They’re doing some upgrading to Manley Field House putting new entrance doors in all around the building and resurfacing the girders that support the building with new cement on the outside of the building. I couldn’t see what was going on inside the building. and just think they haven’t started the new track complex up at Skytop yet.
Lot is going on at Syracuse University. The new IPF building is not only going to be huge but beautiful also. Finishing touches are being done on the new law(Daneen)building and will open this fall.
