Terrel Hunt is the ninth-rated junior quarterback in college football, according to CBSSports’ 2016 NFL draft prospect board. Since Hunt is in the top 10, that means that, as of right now, he has a realistic chance of being drafted after he graduates.
Hunt definitely had a successful sophomore season last year, but it seems a little early to be talking about him in an NFL context. SU’s quarterback needs to continue his development during his junior season to firmly put himself in the NFL conversation. If Hunt is as good as CBSSports’ staff thinks, then he will take a substantial and important step forward this year.
Looking at Ryan Nassib‚Äôs time at Syracuse and the careers of former ACC quarterbacks there is no denying that “junior year leap” QBs who get drafted experience. Nassib bettered his total passing yards, total touchdown passes, completion percentage and quarterback rating from year 2 to year 3 while at SU. He went from a solid college starter to an NFL scout.
Since Nassib is the prototypical pocket passer, it is important to look at past ACC duel-threat quarterbacks that compare better with Hunt’s style. In 2008, while playing for Virginia Tech as a sophomore, Tyrod Taylor split time under center with Sean Glennon. When Taylor fully took over as a junior, his quarterback rating shot up from 103.3 to 149.4 and Virginia Tech went 10-2, winning the Chik-fil-A Bowl vs. Tennessee. He too was able to elevate his game in his junior season. Taylor went on to be the eleventh quarterback drafted in the 2011 NFL draft that was stacked with talent.
Tajh Boyd, former Clemson QB and the thirteenth quarterback drafted in the 2014 NFL draft, improved in all of the same statistics Nassib did from his sophomore year to junior year as well. He also more than doubled his rushing yards. Taylor and Boyd will end up having had more inflated junior year statistics than Hunt because the two pro quarterbacks played for better college teams. But if Hunt is the real deal, he will have a similar statistic spike.
Hunt’s rating as a top 10 player in the nation for his class puts him in elite company. This upcoming season is his chance to show that he really belongs in the NFL draft discussion.

Let Hunt win some big games and play big this year before we start talking about his NFL prospects. I would rather talk about his prospects for retaining his current gig!
Last year, Hunt threw 10 TD passes. 7 came against Tulane and Wagner. I think 2 others came against BC covering a TOTAL OF 9 YARDS!
ONE TIME he threw for more than 200 yards as a starter.

Too early to determine anything whether positive or negative about Hunt. But the general idea is that this jr year is a big one for Hunt in terms of A)showing any development, B)Proving to be more than an average or adequate college starter C)making strides towards being a legit NFL prospect.
The college football podcast had some positive things to say about SU and they seem to like Hunt’s physical traits. Now he has to bring that progression and maturity to another level since he is the unquestioned(for the most part) guy heading into the season. Yea I like his measurables, and athleticism but I feel like the guy is a mature qb mentally. He seems like a hard, determined worker. He has a certain level of leadership in him. But now he has to just be a better qb. So for all of the draft talk, yes I like the fact that he is considered a prospect for 2016 draft, but he is going to have to cross a lot of rivers before that time. He is going to need a lot of support from the offense that seems tailor made to the skillset he has. I don’t think we saw enough of him last year to label him anything yet.
But, as the article said, we have seen other qbs make noticeable improvements in their games going from soph to jr. All in all, we are football starved, but we gotta let this guy get on the field in live game action for a few weeks(against the tougher competition on the schedule) before we make any kinds of determinations about his future. He could explode and be a pretty good qb for the Orange or he could implode to the point where we see Kimble in there. I’m cautiously optimistic.
Another thing too, the draft projections year to year are very very hit or miss. Especially a year in advance. I’m almost sure some one will have a strong season next year, that no one saw coming, and there might be a couple of guys who were projected highly who for some reason drop. I’ve seen qbs(and other positions) who one year had nfl written all over them, only to be nitpicked apart the next year. One year they had “the arm talent to make all the throws at the next level” only to see that they “lack the necessary NFL arm to succeed as a starter”. Go figure. I just hope T Hunt marries the optimism I have with the athleticism and becomes a good college qb. If he does that, scores points and wins games for SU, then the other stuff will fall in place. The offense will put him in the position to get completions and have a decent completion percentage. His legs will help extend plays and drives, but he has to be able to give the Orange the threat of hitting the deep ball(along with a deep threat wr emerging with consistency).
