Brooklyn, NY native Ishaq Williams and three other Notre Dame football players (receiver DaVarius Daniels, defensive back KeiVarae Russell and linebacker Kendall Moore) have been accused of ¬†‚Äúhonor code violations,” according to multiple media reports.
The violations are believed to be some type of academic fraud. According to the South Bend Tribune’s Eric Hansen:
“the scale of alleged fraud is comparable to the highly publicized case at the University of North Carolina.”
The players are accused of handing in work that is not there own. These violations may result in Notre Dame having to forfeit its undefeated 2012 regular season. A report on Yahoo! Sports states:
“Under NCAA protocol, if any fraud that occurred impacted players’ eligibility, the school could ultimately vacate victories. Both Daniels and Russell were significant players during Notre Dame’s 2012 season, when the Irish went 12-0 before losing to Alabama in the BCS Championship Game.”
Former SU coach Doug Marrone heavily recruited Williams in 2010 because of his New York roots. According to rivals.com, the defensive coordinator at the time, Scott Shafer, was the main SU coach trying to recruit Williams. The 5-star defensive lineman was ranked as the seventh best defensive end in the country at the time of his commitment. He ended up choosing Notre Dame over SU and Penn State.
Williams played in all but two games over the last two seasons for the Fighting Irish. He made his first career start as a junior against Air Force. He does not have eye-popping statistics (he has never recorded a sack), but was definitely set to play an important role for Notre Dame this season.
While Notre Dame president Rev. John Jenkins has said that the players have not been dismissed from school, all four have been benched from playing football and the academic fraud investigation is under way.

I hope you can open this. Balls out fun and not a bad recruiting tool, small as it is. HCSS might have something here.
As for Williams the real story is he’s not starting for ND until his senior year? That really shows how lacking SU is in top talent-NOW!! He’d probably start for SU in his Sophomore season. Yes SU is getting better talent and talent will come if SU wins-period. But you win regularly with great talent not good talent.

Aspen, I get what you mean but at the same time I’m not going to give the guy too hard of a time for it. Its a blog entry designed to spur some discussion about the topic….soooo I’ll add my 2 cents.
These infractions could hamper Notre Dame’s chances this season. Williams was expected to play a larger role this year. I saw depth charts where he was listed as a starting DE. Davaris Daniels was a play maker and their(not there lol) best returning wide receiver. While they do return some receivers who could possibly fill that void(including the 6’5″ son of David Robinson), Daniels’ loss will eliminate one of Everett Golson’s top targets. Golson is returning from his own academic situation after a year away from football.

Maybe Terry hasn’t but I have and Hunt looks the same as he did last year. Throwing to your receivers against the second and third team defenses makes you look great,and in the end you have to ask,has he really improved or not? If you were at Fan Fest you would have seen that even the 3rd string defense had sacks against Hunt.
An “AVERAGE” rating is being kind.
Terry has predicted a 6-6 season,I’ve predicted a 9-3 record and some have said a 4-8 or 5-7 record. I’m being pragmatic,realizing that Syracuse will finish somewhere between the 4-8 and 9-3 season this year and finishing with a 6-6 record is not out of line. So let me ask, are you one of those people who posted on syr.com for Syracuse to go undefeated this year? If you are then who’s the one that’s being unrealistic? Give us your prediction for the 2014/15 season.

As I’ve said many times before, show me a guy that calls himself “realistic” and I will show you a doomsday outlook EVERY time. Anybody that doesn’t see an improvement in Hunt with better separation from receivers, never will. They will always find fault with something and call themselves ” realistic .” See Ron above.

I rather live in a world where people see things for what they are. I don’t and won’t look at things through blurry and colored glasses that confuse the hell out of the people who do wear them.
If your calling my prediction of a 9-3 overall record a “doomsday outlook EVERY time”,I feel that your the one that needs the help there buddy.

DCuse, Ron and Terry. The reality for Cuse probably lies somewhere in between and the beauty of it all is that within a couple of weeks, we will begin to see the maturation process and whether Hunt has evolved as a passer.
I just think that alot of his progression does hinge upon how well his targets step up, and whether or not the offense can legit find an identity with this hurry up tempo.
The team’s success will also depend on the Defense not dropping off as well. Terry’s forecast is probably closer to a reality considering some of the losses and the uncertainty at multiple positions. I know that he is usually Mr.Doom and Gloom but in this instance, I can’t say that he is offbase. I can ask him to hold off final judgment of Hunt until we see him in live action against the mid to better caliber opponents. Thats where we will see the measure of Hunt.
The last point I want to make is for me another 6-6 season would be sufficient for me considering last yr, one could argue there should have been a drop off with first yrs in the coaching ranks and at qb. I want to see the steady progression of each position in terms of performance and in terms of recruiting. And if that means we go to another run of the mill bowl and win with 7-6 record I’ll take that. Because I too consider myselfrealistic. Rebuilding a program takes time and more time if you don’t have the big advantages that some of the perennial powers do. So let s hurry up and get this season started. The anxiety is building to a boil.
