Syracuse may have lost one of its defensive leaders in Marquis Spruill to the NFL at the end of last year, but Scott Shafer and co. are hoping that they have found a suitable replacement at linebacker.
On Tuesday night, 3-star linebacker Troy Henderson out of Ohio gave his verbal commitment to the Orange.  His ultimate choice was between Syracuse and Rutgers, but the Orange beat out a very strong Nebraska team for Henderson’s commitment.
Henderson was set to make his decision on July 4, but delayed his announcement after receiving an offer from the Cornhuskers.  He made his announcement via Twitter.
The 6’1”, 210-pound linebacker now becomes the 25th player to pledge Orange for 2015, making this class abnormally large – especially with National Signing Day still months away.  Henderson tallied 100 tackles, eight sacks and forced three fumbles in just his junior season.
Linebacker has been a position of relative strength for the Orange in the recent past.  After Spruill’s departure, the leader of the 2014 squad is expected to be Dyshawn Davis, who was named to the Butkus Award Watch List earlier this week.  Cameron Lynch will also return to the Orange lineup.  The two players combined for 117 tackles and 6.5 sacks last season.  The linebacking corops was a big reason that Syracuse’s rush defense was one of the strongest in the country.  The team did not allow a 100-yard rusher all season, the only FBS team to do so.
Henderson is the third linebacker in the recruiting class of 2015, joining Shyheim Cullen and Doyle Grimes.  All three players are rated 3-star by 247sports—but take that subjective information with a grain of salt, of course.
Henderson hails from Ohio, an area where Shafer has flexed his Midwestern roots in the class of 2015.  Shafer is from Ohio himself, and that definitely appealed to Henderson.  He was also interested in the Dome, the Whitman School of Management, and even the dorms.
Another significant impact of Henderson’s verbal is Syracuse’s growing dominance over Rutgers.  After already snagging a couple recruits from the New Jersey and Connecticut areas, Syracuse is starting to dominate the mid-Atlantic region like they had in the past.  Establishing a recruiting pipeline in the area could really strengthen the Orange recruiting classes for years to come.  Henderson also had a chance to play in the Big Ten, but elected the ACC over Rutgers’ and Nebraska’s conference.
The Orange now have the largest recruiting class in the nation with 25 players, which is pretty absurd to think about considering the late start on commitments.

Imagine… Cuse redshirting good talent? Flies in the face of play right away…I guess good problems…
Henderson seems to be a quality LB recruit that will make SU deeper at the position.
We will have alot of young LB’s with little experience going into 2015. With Davis, Lynch, Arciniega and Kirkland gone after this season, only Hodge has meaningful game experience. I don’t see any of the younger LB’s getting much PT this season with Kirkland, Arciniega and Vigille as back-ups. I still don’t know who will start at MLB.

This is a good pick up for the Cuse!! This staff is really doing a great job selling the Syracuse Brand!. If we have a good season on the field, in 2016, we could start to see some higher rated kids selecting the Cuse!!
Look how many JUCO kids we had to get in the past under Marone‚Ķthere is no room now for Juco’s. What a huge difference. We are winning kids against Nebraska, Florida, Oklahoma instead of losing out to the MAC, which was the case under Doug and GRob!

I don’t want to start any rumors here,please understand “THAT I’M NOT STARTING A RUMOR HERE”. I’ve read where DE Tyrone Wheatly Jr might be the silent commit and just doesn’t want to announce it yet. Must be Michigan is jerking him around and doesn’t have any room for him on the team. yet? I’m probably just blowing smoke here,but I find it awful funny that Michigan hasn’t offered him a scholarship yet.

If that silent verbal is Wheatley, that would be huge!!!!!!!!! I can’t imagine that we get that lucky yet!! ‚Ķsigning guys like Wheatley is where we need to grow to in terms of recruiting. I feel we are right around the corner and will soon have these guys knocking on our door!!! Go Cuse!!!

According to 3 different recruiting sites, Michigan has offered Wheatley.
Are we missing something here..I thought Wheatley’s being offered by the Wolverines was a given.

Great responses guy’s. Terry and I said a year ago after marrone left for Buffalo and took his father with him that there was no way he’d ever commit to Syracuse.
@orangeinva;yes,we could be overlooking something concerning Wheatly Jr. I thought Wheatly to Michigan was a foregone conclusion.

I just read that KJ Williams is attending Milford Academy in the fall. Does that mean we’ll get him after the first of the year if his grades improve?

This 2015 Class is just about complete. A TE would be good to get. I do expect one or two shake-ups. These players were all wanted by our staff so we have to believe they will be good D1 players down the road. They have a year to develop and to get bigger and quicker. I don’t care about the stars. They all want to wear Orange.
I have a question: Does a recruited football player have to be offered a “Football Scholarship” or may the player be offered “Other Financial Aid” i.e. Academic, Leadership , Grants, etc.? Then per the ACC ‘rules’, may Syracuse University offer more than 25 Football Scholarships and ‘Gray-shirt’ others?

I have only heard “no chance” on Wheatley. I don’t know what, but there is something there that is beyond “I have bigger offers”.
I think he was very pro-PSU until O’Brien left. He was still with them as he liked the position coach I think, Larry Johnson. Franklin dumped him once he got in place (the guy was the recruiting coordinator and was retained until Franklin got in to decide what he wanted to do). Ohio State smartly scooped him up and I have to imagine they are in the hunt for him, but the Mich vs OSU may be too much to allow that.
From what I hear, KJ will enroll at Milford, but there is work needed to repair a damaged relationship between he and the staff. I am not at all sure what went wrong, but I hear they were not too happy that he didn’t qualify.
The silent is Ellison, a DB or Safety out of Don Bosco in NJ. He is undersized, but a big hitter. He wants to announce on his mother’s birthday (Aug. 11 I think).
We have some fun to look forward to with the ’16 class it seems, and this early full class is affording the staff time to recruit 2016. RB Robert Washington is high on the list, DB Patrice Rene, and I have hear of a 4 star OL interested. Rashan Gary has also been offered and if Rutgers implodes, it could swing our way. He is already slated the best NJ recruit for his year, and maybe even the best in the country. He plays in my town and I will try to get a look at the giant DL. I think he’s 6’5″ 295 entering his junior year.
@Malone; thanks for all of the news,it’s great that you’re in a poasition to see what’s happening with the Rutgers football prgram. I agree if Rutgers finishes near the bottom of the BIG this fall,I feel that all hell is going to break with the recruits and Syracuse is going to be the school to benifit.
Your comment about KJ attending Milford Academy and mending fences with the coaching staff. All I have to say is making a stupid mistake at 17 or 18 yhears of age you turn that mistake into a learning experience. For anyone to have hard feelings and is going to have troubles overlooking it,well it’s time for all to grow up and realize that things like that are going to happen. I’m not just talking about KJ here either,I’m talking about the coaches learning from it to.
When I make a statement like that,I defer to Terry because he’s been telling us that the coaches should have known about his situation back during his first marking period of his senior year.
