Last season, the linebackers were the strongest and most indispensible part of the SU defense. This year, the team brings back two of its three starting linebackers in Dyshawn Davis and Cam Lynch, losing just Marquis Spruill to the NFL. SU also has other returning players who played last year, like Josh Kirkland and Luke Arciniega. Because of all the returning players, there is a chance for this unit to once again be very strong. And with some improvement still needed for a strong secondary, it is important for the linebackers to leader the team again.
While Davis and Lynch are expected to play well and likely will, it remains to be seen who the third starting linebacker will be and how well he will play. At different times last year, we saw both Kirkland and Arciniega slide in for injured players. Either of them could fill the void left by Spruill. But a name to look out for could be Marqez Hodge, who played sparingly last season as a true freshman. In a game when most of the SU defense struggled against Georgia Tech, Hodge flourished, tallying 12 tackles and flying around the field. This could be a key in him winning the open job because he showed an ability to get to the ball in a very fast spread-out offense.
A wild card in the scenario could be the growth of incoming freshman Zaire Franklin. Obviously, as a true freshman, it would be very difficult to start week one, but maybe by the end of the year, Franklin could get some valuable time on the field. Another incoming freshman, Colton Moskal, could face a similar situation. Going into the future, fans could look forward to seeing Franklin, Moskal and Hodge flying around the field in the same linebacking corps.
This year, it is important to see the linebackers continue to be the leaders of the defense. Marquis Spruill is gone, and it is up to rising seniors Cam Lynch and Dyshawn Davis to take over, which shouldn’t be hard for either one. They do not need to fill in for Spruill’s production so much as his leadership in the defense as a senior member of the unit.
The linebackers are the core of the defense, literally creating the middle of the formation. This year, the linebackers need to keep up their strong play even if it means the infusion of some new blood.

I don’t know how “ready” Franklin is or will be in the fall. I know he will be a very good player eventually. I kind of hope he redshirts with the rest of the freshmen.
Guys like Alryk Perry and Vigille need to be ready by the opener against Nova. If they’re not “Ready” then Franklin may end up playing.
Just got a request from Cuse.. Their raising money to monitor the individual trees at the new “Syracuse Life Sciences Complex”.. Not even a building..a “Complex”. Let’s monitor each tree so we can prove those evil people are polluting our air…Can’t get going on a new football facility but we need these liberals spending our money monitoring a tree?..

I’m intrigued about Perry because of his resume speed when recruited. Zaire Franklin is the top guy coming into the unit and his getting PT shouldn’t be a question. The only question is how soon for him and Moskal? Hodge will get the MLBer spot unless he gets injured early in camp. If he does the job goes wide open for the whole bunch of them in there.
My only concern with the LB’s is their size!! They could wear down if the depth just isn’t there!! But other wise I like the LB’s as a whole!!

Have you read the article telling us that Syracuse finally got the building permit from the city to start construction on the IPF? Malone was accurate last fall when he told us that the city officials were the culprits holding up the project due to on site drainage problems.
“The main issue was building over a city storm drain — not a thing that you can usually do legally. That law has been changed and the drainage issue’s been resolved, clearing that issue up for SU.”
It looks like lawyers for both parties were involved over this issue. Anyway,things got resolved and I hope they start construction real soon.
Terry have you read or has any of your friends sad anything about Dr. Gross changing the name of the Syracuse University Football Team to “NYCT” for marketing purposes? It’s caused some to hold protest in front of the dome. Will NYCT replace the block “S” on the helmets? Will the team get introduced as NYCT or as the Syracuse Orangemen before every game? Will Syracuse University drop their name from the diploma’s and put “New York College Team” in it’s place? It looks like Gross has lost his friggin mind. Maybe the 2014 season is going to be more interesting that we thought.
I don’t think Syracuse University is about to change it’s name and will always be known as the “ORANGEMEN”.
It’s about time Dr. Gross better known as Robin joins Nancy Cantor better known as Bat Woman down in Rutgers sol that they can screw their programs up.

Anyone in its right mind knows that the slow process of the IPF and other stuff like it is always held up by administration red tape. A good administration would have had this issue settled months ago no matter what Malone says or thinks!! Its called power politics!!
You see that SU got a nice hefty check from the ACC!! Two things here!!! First its football related and what did the Big Least give SU in the past $$$$ wise-that was a joke!! I think its a little over 20.3 million!! $100,000 less per team than the SEC!! Put that in your pipe old time BIG LEAST fans. Great move for SU. Sorry just tired of the old school thoughts!!

Syracuse received a $20.8 million payday from the ACC. That’s great and one more thing to remember is that it’s only going to get bigger when Syracuse becomes a force to be reckoned with in football,and an ACC Network for television is completed. In the 2012/13 basketball season the team generated a $25.8 million dollar profit. How much do you think the Duke game alone in the dome generated?
I honestly believe overall things are looking up for Syracuse University Athletics and I also think the best is yet to come and will probably carry this thought with me to my final resting place that Syracuse will be National Champions again. I just don’t when but I envision it happening.
Gotta go watch my 12 year old granddaughter play in a Softball tournament today. Will be gone all day today and half a day tommorow if were lucky.
