Yesterday Shyheim Cullen verbally committed to Syracuse. He is the 14th Orange commit for 2015, which is a strong number for a middle-tier ACC program in June. But like so many of the Orange’s recent recruits, he is a relative unknown. According to Rivals.com, Syracuse is his only offer.
There is so much talk about the SU football program trying to improve to eventually become national contenders. That clearly will take time, but it is the ultimate goal of Scott Shafer and the rest of the Syracuse coaches. In the coming years it will be interesting to see how effective Shafer’s staff proves to be at evaluating talent. Can these 3-star, 2-star and unranked players successfully transform the program?
Of course, some unranked players do pan out: former Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib was unranked coming out of high school and now plays for the New York Giants. However, it is very disheartening to see Syracuse continue to receive commitments from these types of players when the University of North Carolina already has four 4-star recruits committed for 2015. Both programs went 4-4 in the ACC last season, yet the Tar Heels currently have the 14th best recruiting class in the nation.
Has there been any news of the Orange being even remotely close to landing a 4-star player so far this summer?
Sadly, the answer is no.
Seven of the Orange’s fourteen 2015 recruits have no rating on ESPN. Tyrone Perkins, Sam Clausman, Anthony Giudice, Evan Adams, Brandon Ginnetti and Cullen all had received little to no coverage at the time of their commitments. Every recruiting class has some hidden gems, but it seem like SU’s is filled with them.
There really should be a few more proven players.
Syracuse fans must ask themselves what the realistic expectations are for this group if these recruiting trends continue. What will we be happy with? Six wins? Eight wins? Ten wins? Between the construction of the new practice facility, the back-to-back bowl wins and the move to the ACC, Syracuse definitely has the makeup of a team on the rise.
But will the Orange posses the players to carry out that growth if 4- and 5-star players continue to go elsewhere? Only time will tell.

Another stupid article by the fizz proving once again they know nothing about recruiting. 247 has them as a top 35 class. No mention of that here.
well my opinion is that the commitments are pretty much under the radar and underrated players. if you look at last year we were i think at 4-5 verbals, so with that we now have 15 is it verbals. i feel there is a more of a buzz about syracuse football and more kids are curious to know more about the program,which is a sign of a rising program. now with a commitment to enhance athletic facilities to better the athletic programs here at syracuse makes it even better. i like the kids coming and i like the kids that verballed to come in for next year as well, but lets not forget the 2 stars we had in chandler jones, and justin pugh who both went in the first round of the nfl draft as well as jay bromley who didn’t have an offer until after a nyc all star game and was drafted in the third round of this years nfl draft.i always beleived syracuse is and will always be a great place to come and play football here.
A rising program is not built on 2 star/NR or hope and pry talent. History has shown that for DECADES!! If you want 5-7/6-6 or luckily 7-5 seasons OK!!! But you’ll never complete for the top 20 let alone top 10 with lower ranked talent it won’t happen!! We all know that but the homies refuse to see that. My head hurts from beating it against a wall. The facts show this easily!!

College football recruiting is just like high school boys and dating.
Everyone wants to go out with the hot cheerleader and every dude in the school knows who the “hot chicks” are. Always overlooked are the math nerds….Once you get out of HS, all that stuff changes.
Right now, none of the hot chicks want the Cuse!.So, Cuse has a choice to make, we can stay home from the dance, dreaming we could go out with the hot chicks, or we can start asking out girls not on everyone’s A list and go to the dance and have some fun.
Right now, 4 and 5 star talent doesn’t find the Cuse attractive….we are still asking them out…but they are saying no! But, if we keep putting a better product on the field, we will continue to get more attractive to them….and more will start to say yes…But just like in HS, many times, the real gems are the one’s overlooked , your NR and 2 stars!
with what we have been against after the demise of grob, yes i beleive syracuse is a rising program. better conference in the acc, a 17 million dollar indoor practice facility, more football recruits wanting to play for us than in the past 7 years. i know syracuse is not at the top but they are on the rise , its turning the corner. the coaching staff knows what there recruiting and i have the utmost confidence in what there doing. you have to start somewhere and you can’t sit and wait for these 4-5 star recuits to make up there minds.. just go to the games..

I remember when the Fizz actually wrote articles worth reading. This shit has been lame the last year or so. What happened? You guys just get lazy? All of these pieces are a regurgitation of Syracuse.com with a little opinion mixed in. At least take the angle Sean does at NunesMagician and add some humor to the material. Hey Terry, Chill out man. We won 7 games in a 4 year period not too long ago. We’ve won 27 the last 4 seasons with 3 bowl wins. Gain some perspective, homey.
The latest verbal is a safety from Ohio named Marquis Blair. 6’3″ 185 and runs sub 4.5 40. Not rated by Scout. As a WR he averaged over 20 yards per catch. On defense he looks very good lining up at LB.
This is another UTR(under the radar)guy that will end up getting many more offers. I hope he sticks with SU.
when thew player committed fill a need and are capable of performance upgrading with coaching and condition the star factor will take care of itself with a year or two. Cullen is going to be an outstanding LBer for the Orange defense.Rival’s rating is hardly a text book in its accuracy. I trust the coaching staff a great deal more than that site.
Several of the recruits have not been evaluated by the so called expert services. These recruits have been evaluated by the su coaches. So either you trust the coaches ability to identify talent or you don’t.I think the staff here has a pretty good idea of what kind of player they are looking for. SU has never nor will ever get many 4 or 5 so called star players, Ck out the nfl draft, plenty of 2 star kids get drafted. Stick to facts fizz.
Lets see Mr. William knows homer all things!!! Average chicks are not bad either but they won’t win beauty contests. Homers refuse to see the facts. I know some of you so called homers are fine with 10 year runs of 6 or 7 wins a year with lowly bowl games. Well that’s why SU gets all these NR’s out there. But SU will never get near the big dance doing the 2 star NR thing!! NO WAY!! Educate your selves and look up the last 10 years of the top 10 team in college FB. But what I can not understand is why these NR are over looked yet SU gets them. The last to NR’s look interesting, but still NR’s. Some site will make them 2 stars since they have verballed.
imwright is wrong!! You got sun stroke or what!! The last few years are better but major programs nation wide would fire their coaches over these bland seasons. Yes SU is improving and I want the best for them. I can tell you must be a JILLS, METS, or KNICKS like fan. Just happy being a fan. True fans like GGGGGGGGGG-Men, Yankee Red Sox etc. not only want more wins but do it yearly. I know I’m asking a lot from homies like you, but tell me what wrong with asking where the “beef” for this program. The talent is better but slightly only not competitive talent as of yet-no means!! As for my perspective I look at the records like you did. Yes 3 minor bowls wins(better than nothing)I guess. But back to back 6-6 seasons is average at best. And so far the talent level is average to below at best. I know 4/5 stars are not a true option-YET!! But winning(average 8-10 wins) over a # of years begets talent not your average team out there like SU. THE SUBB fans have no problem with 20 wins!! Why not start demanding the same for SUFB too!! I’m “cool” with that. I only get hot when homers are “happy” with average records like 6-6 and low ranked bowls. SU is better than that to me!! No homer here just a true fan that’s tired of the bull bleep average seasons lately!! So I say SH*T!! Homers just think its OK!!

I disagree with Terry completely.
If you think Syracuse will ever compete with Alabama or some of the other perennial national championship contenders in terms of attracting top recruits you’re dreaming. I saw a report on recruiting budgets a few years ago and the football recruiting budget at Georgia Tech (which by state law has to publish numbers by sport) was bigger than the entire SU recruiting budget for ALL sports. It’s not even a comparison.
That said, SU can develop a program built around players that are brought in with the expectation that they’ll be here 4 or 5 years. SU can compete by rolling out experienced teams year after year instead of re-tooling with kids that expect to go to the league after 2 or 3 years.

Yup..under Chris Petersen, BSU never had a class in the top 40- but was like 96-16 the 8 years Petersen was coach.
In the past 6 years OLe MIss has had FOUR recruiting classes in the top 20..And yet their record over the last 5 years? 30-33.
I agree with Terry on this one. Every state lands their own big fish, except the ‘Cuse. In the 2015 class the following schools have at least one 4 star commit: Boston College, Illinois, SMU, Washington State, Florida Atlantic, Cincinnati, Rice, Boise St, and Houston. That is based on ESPN, and I didn’t look at every single school so there are obviously more, but my point is that we are NOT competing with Alabama we are competing in a relative manner to those schools. We may have to beat out Rutgers and Pitt for recruits but Rice has to fend off UT and TAMU, Cincinnati battles with OSU, Washington State against Washington, Florida Atlantic vs FSU/Florida, so lets just count ourselves lucky that we don’t have any in-state threats towards our recruits.
My point is that everyone has to battle for the top recruits. When you watch our recruits on tape, you can see they are all certainly talented, but role players are role players. You can’t expect every no name to be Ryan Nassib/Alec Lemon/Jay Bromley/Chandler Jones. While those players are recruiting triumphs, they are aberrations to the system. We need to get at least 1 or 2 big recruits and then supplement them with the under the radar players we already get. We don’t need the #4 recruiting class in the nation, but we certainly need to manage our north east market first and then worry about these florida prospects.

Read an article in Syracuse.com about the IPF!! HCSS says 12/1/2014 yeah I’ll believe that when I see that???? Quote from that article “it will have lockers, bathrooms and plenty of storage place”. Wow sounds like the warehouse I worked at in my youth. Other than an empty building I would hope it has MORE athletic stuff around??? 17 million and you get bathrooms and lockers let alone space to store stuff!! I was hoping for more!! Budgets is just another to control the average state of SUFB and you agree with that. 30 to 40 other programs deal with. So you think SU shouldn’t!! RIGHT NOW its all about popularity and SUFB right now is behind SUBB in popularity. Mark my words when the day comes and SUFB evens up with SUBB or surpasses it(it does to me SUFB is #1 to me)you’ll see changes you don’t see now. Its the homerisms out there that are keeping SU in the unheralded world of CFB!!

I married one of those girs back in 1969. I thought she was the prettiest girl back then and still feel that away about her today. I would put her up against anyone,beauty is only skin deep,it’s what’s inside that makes a woman beautify.
I think Terry,no matter what the subject is,your trying to hit a grand slam homerun with all of the different opinions that you have to offer. I honestly belief that if Syracuse were to get 25 4/5* athletes to commit to us you’d find fault because all were not 5* athletes.

Terry et al. The IPF is not $17 mil. I feel like a broken record. The IPF is $9 mil. Other projects fell under the same budget allocation, including renovations to the academic rooms around teh lampe facility and the replacement track up on Skytop. The lockers are for officials, not athletes, and the bathrooms are for the other fields (soccer and field hockey) that play games and attract fans there. The building is a glorified shed and that makes it what every other facility is in the nation. I have seen pics of Michigan, and PSU in recent days and they are not as nice as ours will be. Even Alabama’s IPF is nothing to look at. Take it easy on the coaches and administration trying to upgrade the program. I get your “anti-homer” rant, but it doesn’t ring true. I am not saying you are lying, not anything of that sort. I am saying you are demanding things that are not feasible right now. You are showing little faith in the coaching staff. You are not acknowledging this is the most investment in the program since they rebuilt the weight room with McNabb money. That is like ten years ago. Don’t slap that in the face!

I don’t understand the reasoning that some people display on this website. What did they think they were going to get,the Taj Mahall with all of the things that glitter? It’s a damn indoor football facility used to throw footballs in when the weather dictates.
Your right on the money again,when you say there isn’t any of them on any other campus nation wide that’s going to be any better than what’s being built in upstate NY.
I think some people need to grow up and start using some comon sense here. The only complaint that I have woith the building is that I’m going to lose my tailgating spot and that sucks.

Malone from my buds at other areas they feel that the IPF will be functional yet with no real fizz like other facilities. And that is because the lack of interest from the administration!! And thank you for your correction. 17 million might of had the real fizz like the kids want.
Terry, I assure you the other facilities have no fizz. Ours will have natural lighting, which is something none of the ones I’ve seen have. If these guys are talking about the entire of the facilities, as in locker and weight, and trainers, lounge, etc. they are not comparing apples to apples. We have that stuff in an unconnected but adjacent building. I thought it would make more sense if they took the field immediately next to the football building, but either way, I am not sure your guys are comparing apples to apples.
