Scott Shafer and his staff is still trying to help the Syracuse football program bounce back.
The Orange has appeared in three bowl games in the last four years, and have come out victorious in all three games, including a Texas Bowl victory in Shafer’s first year.
Quarterbacks coach Tim Lester has been the man behind the recruitment of Downers Grove North High School (Illinois) quarterback David Edwards, a recruit in the Class of 2015. The 6’6”, 225 lb. play-caller hopes to transfer to the tight end position at the collegiate level.
Edwards has interest in Arkansas, Ball State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Washington, Western Michigan, and Wisconsin, according to Rivals. He has received offers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Syracuse, and Wisconsin.
Edwards says Lester contacted him about possibly moving to be a linesman. Edwards says he just wants what will give him the best opportunity to play on the field.
“I’ll do whatever,” he said.
As the calendar moves into the summer, Edwards says he’s not far off from his decision.
He will be very focused during his senior season, so he wants to know where he is going sooner, rather than later.
“I’m trying to make a decision toward the end of the summer,” Edwards said. “I want to get the process out of the way by the start of my senior year.”
As for what he has to work on, it’ll depend on what position he plays at the college level.
He wants to work on his foot speed, and to be able to break down a linebacker. He wants to be able to block better.
“I need to bulk up for college,” Edwards said. “I won’t be ready right away. It will take time to build into the position.”
Syracuse recruiting is likely to remove when the coaching staff has a deep commitment to improving the program. Shafer and his staff’s approach to building the program is something that recruits, like Edwards, certainly notice and pay attention to in their process.
“A coach who wants to be successful shows the character of him and his staff in a positive way.”

I have always defended the recruiting sites over the recent years. But having SU’s 2015 class rated 50 is nonsense!!!!!! A couple of 3’s(star) and bunch of 2’s(star) with a couple of NR’s is not 50 at all. Come on!! Again this crazy shot gun approach of feeding the media and us SU fans these better talent players and ending up with lesser talent is getting real old and not truthful!! Why does HCSS do this??? I thought this guy had no dougie in him??? I do believe that the talent(class of 2015) so far is of a higher level, but not of a better quality level. 6-6 like instead of 8-4 like!! That’s a huge difference!! Why in the hell does this site and many other loyal SU sites say a great player is interested in SU and in all reality the majority of them refuse to be interested??? Stop this madness and tell us the truth!! We can handle it!!
DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!
I am taking the opposite approach of the glass is 1/2 empty Terry. SU must keep the commitments coming regardless of the stars as we must trust the coaching staff’s evaluations. So far HCSS has done a very commendable job and I feel it will continue to improve.
Evaluating football talent is like evaluating horse flesh. California Chrome is a great example of a no nothing horse owners and trainers and yet the horse is poised to take the triple crown. Shafer and his assistant coaches evaluate and recruit football flesh and you either have confidence in their ability to gather into the orange camp good talent or you don’t. IMO so far I have confidence in the SU coaches.
Terry, list me 5 things that will make you SU Football happy and what needs to be done per item to resolve your disdain of SU Football.
Terry, you can’t have it both ways. You complain about our recruiting rankings…then we get rated at 50…and you say that is not right….LOL…. I have been saying this since Shafer took over: This staff can recruit and our recruiting is getting better!!!!
Now, we have to start winning on the field, we do that, and we will continue to improve. There is a plan or intent here that was absent under Marrone!.You have to love what McDonald is doing in Florida……our success in Illinois…and now, with Acosta, we seem to be on the right track in Jersey….Just hold on Terry…better days are ahead!!!!!
Doc, I say it often but Ditto.
Terry, I have immense respect for your love of SU Football. You definitely want to see the program progress. But at the same time I think you have to exercise some patience and be realistic about the current Situation SU is in. Its not to say be blindly optimistic, but give the coaching staff(this current regime) time to build the program in their image.
This is where they will have to EARN their keep. Because they can’t coast on the advantages larger programs have, they have to have keen eyes for under the radar talent. They have to have an even better feel for how to pull out every ounce of productive and growth from their recruits while gameplanning them into situations that best utilize their abilities. Once their work translates to consistent winning, then better caliber recruits will definitely give SU a longer look. But remember we are still pretty early in this process.
First FRANK you don’t hang out here very much do you. Being a solid SUFB fanatic since I can remember-I’m 64 now. Sat on those concrete bleachers in the bitter cold and watched Jim Brown to todays players at the DOME!!
I don’t understand a 6-6 or 7-6 is a winning program. Yes in numbers but not in sense!! We all know SU is far from a winning season for this coming season. Only great play and coaching will do that. And there are weaknesses at both of these positions!!
You guys are something else!! You don’t win so far 2 out 3 triple crown races and be a NOTHING-stupid example!! SU is barely above .500 in the last 10 years is that winning-HELL NO!!
Both ways-Dr. Billy!! First 2015 class is not a 50 rated(just looked at it now 44 give me a break)class. Like I said its better but not great and it won’t win 8 games. But maybe another boring 6-6 season!! You forget SU in an ACC program now!! I love HCSS to bits but he’s wrong doing this #@%&ing idea of shot gunning the top talent and getting none of them!! WHY HCSS????? So I’m not totally satisfied with his recruiting methods!! And NJ is not a simple lock either!!
BSFF-My issue here is the way over the top the fans are (some fans)!!! You are satisfied with .500 seasons and this coming season does not look like a lock up 7/8 win season at all=RIGHT!! Just by the improvements since GROB and early dougie has SU at 12-12 or 14-12 including low rated bowls. Progress yes but turtles make progress too. I’m totally stoked by these minor improvements, but any coach/player/AD knows the last 2 years mean nothing. Only the season in front of us means everything now. Yes be excited about the next season but SUFB is only a couple of bad breaks away from another 3/4/5 win season. My point is to HCSS be truthful in your build up of this SUFB program. Stop the nonsense of leaking out talent that will never get to SU. But at the same time the above mentioned fans want to gamble on talent not proven on the field. This does not build winning programs! It AT BEST builds .500 at best programs. And the SUFB program history has shown that!! I’m just tired of the over hype methods of the fans and staff. As in the past I WILL correct my beliefs if they are wrong. I have shown that before!! But to you all if I’m right I’m considered a troll!! Well so be it. The trouble is I should not defend SU against its own. Its hard enough defending SU against other programs fans from the outside!!
Sorry for the babbling, but show me first before you claim everything is so rosey!!
PS How’s the SUFB facilities going???? ENOUGH SAID!!
@Terry;
After the 2 CB’s committed to the Cuse without making a visit, you said that you were a little concerned because of neither one making a visit. I’ve always responded to your critizism by telling you that I’ve never believed in the star rating system and that it should be thrown out. the amolunt of stars a player gets won’t make him play any harder in a game. His ability to play a position is what matters.
One other thing that I’ve always disagreed with you on is,how easy it is for you to dismiss a kid or throw him under the bus just because he doesn’t have a N/R or have four or five stars after his name. I guess Malone weas right when he told us all that the recruits that we were getting were all underrated by the different web sites and a couple days after he made that comment I read articles that Devantae Davis and Cody Conway are being reevaulated and their rankings by those who do distribute those stars were sure to climb. Amazing!!!!!
I’ve always said Terry, that I would take a kid that has character and plays the game with heart. The recruits that Shafer,Acosta and McDonald are bringing to the Cuse I believe have both of those qualities.
Last year you wanted Syracuse to improve it’s standing in the class national rankings.
Scout.com has us ranked at #56 a jump of 13 spots from last week.
rivals.com has us ranked at #44 a jump of 18 spots from last week.
247sports has us ranked at #32
Those numbers this early in the year are impressive Terry, must be the pundits know something about the recruits that we don’t.
Syracuse has room for another 17-18 recruits for 2015. With the numbers being as high as they are now ,we might get into the high 20’s before it’s all over with. Isn’t that what you’ve wanted/wished for over the last couple of years?
I looked at the recruiting sites and Penn State has 8(4*) and 8(3*) recruits so far this year and is ranked #2 behind Alabama.
#1 Alabama has 2(5*) recruits and 11(4*) recruits this earl in the season.
So please give me an honest answer Terry, jusy how many of those 15(4*) recruits that these two teams will have on their rosters make irt to the NFL 4 years later after graduation?
I know,I’m an overly optimistic homie. But you wanna know something,I’m damn proud to wear that label.
Go CUSE
Well homie (Ron) how many of the NR’s or some 2 stars will make the SUFB program-period. SU’s talent level is improving at a snails pace and with that you get 6-6 seasons like lately. I’m pissed because all over the SU sites it says this quality player and that quality player is interested in SU-BULLBLEEP to that. Maybe a couple. Why does HCSS do that???? Yet verbals are of average to below average talent that HCSS gambles on!! Character and heart are important and many DIV 3 players have that, but what those Div 3 players don not have is gifted talent. If you want .500 seasons then stay your course and these lower rated talent will get you there. I WANT SU TO IMPROVE!!!! That takes a well run program with quality players and coaches!! I’m tired of this 4 star players advertised on other SU sites that have no interest in SU! Just give me the truth and stop this game of fraud of trying to upgrade the program by deception!! It will eventually catch up to you some day!! But at the same time if the ratings are true and SU is climbing into a better world go for it. But at the same time they are not signed yet!! Being optimistic is great if its realistic! RON your vision will not get SU into the higher ranks of NCAA COLLEGE FOOTBALL!! Unless SU joins the SUNY football league!! SORRY DUDE!!
GO CUSE!!!
@Terry;
Neither you nor I or anyone else has the slightest idea as to what any of these recruits will do during a game until they actually step on the field and play. No matter how many stars are after their names. What I do believe is these kids have character and many are being overlooked by the people who do the rating.
When I look at the tapes of those two OL from Florida play I notice that they’re playing against other players of equal size opposite them and dominating the line of scrimmage. “CHARACTER AND HEART”. Very important.
Alabama has been the #1 ranked class for the last 7-8 years. Their roster is loaded with 4 and 5 star athletes. What do you think all those 4* athletes that go there feel like knowing the possibility of getting playing time is zero and all becoming practice dummies?
Do you actually believe that Syracuse is the only college that uses the so called “SHOTGUN APPROACH” to recruiting athletes?
I see Syracuse going after recruits to fill certain positions on the team, letting them all know who we are and what we stand for by sending out e-mails with a scholarship offer attached for them is not a bad thing. If we get some of those players fine,if we don’t Terry it’s not the end of the world either.
My optimistic homie view is telling me that the 2016 season will be the critical turning point for the program. That’s when the recruits from the classes of 2013,2014 and some from 2015 mesh together to form the teams that you and I remember. I see Syracuse returning to the AP and coaches yearly poll by becoming the 12th-15th ranked team in the country.
That’s what I see. Have a great day and watch the womens lacrosse team take the national championship on Sunday. Have a great holiday weekend.
