Does the decision to allow Northwestern to unionize affect Syracuse? Let’s start here: Nothing will be affected for quite some time. The NCAA is loading up for bear. The last thing the billion-dollar power structure is going to allow is its free labor suddenly having rights or (gasp!) salaries and pensions. This is just the first step of a marathon courtroom footrace.
But since Northwestern is a private university with an FBS football team, much like Syracuse, the question has been floated whether those types of institutions would be affected sooner.
Does Syracuse have plenty in common with Northwestern? Yes. Private. Power conference. High academics. Darryl Gross and the decision-makers on the Hill are most definitely as interested as anyone else in what happens.
But there is an oversimplification going on, not surprisingly. Sports media talks about sports things. Batting lineups. Quarterback ratings. Who stinks. Who’s great. They don’t talk about litigation, law or labor ethics. So things that will take 3-5 years to figure out are suddenly being pasted together with shoddy speculation.
There’s some tremendous thought out there from guys like Jay Bilas. But 1+2 does not necessarily = 3 here. This is a different state. This will be fought at every step by the NCAA. And while there’s plenty in common between Northwestern and Syracuse (and other private schools in power leagues like Duke and Notre Dame and Stanford), one domino won’t knock down the other right now.
Should Syracuse fans pay attention to it? Absolutely. But not because it will affect SU more than Rutgers. We should all pay attention because it’ll affect the entire college sports universe.

The current status for today’s athletes is a complete barer system They trade their talent for extremely valuable scholarships that may be as high as a quarter million dollars if the take a red-shirt year and go for graduate work which is far more common with football players than basketball. No taxes paid as well whether by law or avoidance. The rest is pure BS.A family free of college tuition responsibilities can shoot some cash over to a a son or daughter. for dates and pocket expenses. I understand poverty very well but getting further assistance from schools might be killing the golden goose.
This reminds me of when the USA started adding PROs to the Olympic team. The end of amateur sports.
The majority of my friends(90%) that have college age kids with no chance of a athletic scholarship are struggling to find the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for a college education. For a player to get a full ride to SYRACUSE is a joy. SYRACUSE IS NOT A BAD PLACE AT ALL! And many of these players are not your best Einstein’s in class out there either!! Many of my friends kids are “A” students to boot!! So to me and many more a free college ride at SYRACUSE is quite a great move for a students future. For a parent to go into hock for the betterment of their child is quite admirable. But at the same time a student who earns a scholarship through his/her athletic abilities is also admirable as well. That’s enough though! Help the parents get their children a good education like every parent wants!! NO PAY!!

Insanity in our greedy society…I used to like unions but they’ve outservered in most cases their usefulness by getting greedy!! Now they want to rob the cradle? I’ll quit watching..already they’ve feminized the game to 2 hand touch with ticky tacky penalty call’s.
