Syracuse is making its way toward the rankings, but still much work to do. It all starts with recruiting, even landing some of the nation’s best players.
The Orange has made an offer to Myles Autry, a running back from Norcross High School in Georgia. Autry, who attends the same high school as former UConn basketball star Jeremy Lamb, is a 5’11” back who has received offers from more than a handful of other schools.¬†
 
Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, UCF, UCLA, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, California, and Louisiana have all made offers to Autry, according to Scout. 
From the ACC, Autry has received offers from Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Maryland.
Who knows if this kid has any interest in moving out of his home state, but he has the option to stay close to home.
According to ESPN’s Recruiting Nation, Autry is a 4-star player and the scouts give him a grade of an 82. He’s also the 22nd-ranked player in the state of Georgia.
His junior year was his breakout season. He rushed for 560 yards and had six rushing touchdowns. He actually caught 45 passes and picked up 632 yards and scored 10 touchdowns as a junior. He’s a dual-threat player and that’s good for any team. His senior year consisted of fewer than 200 yards on the ground and 336 receiving yards.
Syracuse already has a 4-star commit in K.J. Williams. The Orange also has two other commits at the running back position in Ervin Phillips and Naesean Howard.
Autry is fast. He returns kicks at Norcross and his quick feet completely fake out defenders and before anyone realizes it, Autry walks into the end zone. He’s not a Jerome Smith-type player who pushes his way for every yard. He likes to get around and break free. At the college level, he will work to get stronger and find his way to break through linemen and get out into the open field. Right now, his speed is big. His toughness needs some improving.
With Prince-Tyson Gulley almost done and George Morris II getting ready to take things over, Autry would be a huge addition for the Orange because he would give Syracuse something new.

What Myles Autry needs to look at is when and how soon can he get onto the playing field.
As we all know Jerome Smith is leaving this year for the NFL. PTG has one more year if he stays healthy leaving us with George Morris 11 and Devante McFarlane as our RB’s. If one of them gets hurt,we don’t have anyone as a backup. I can see Ervin Phillips and Naesean Howard getting asked to play on the Defensive side of the ball.
So if Myles Autry set’s and thinks this thing through with his parents and high school coaches,Syracuse is the right place for him to be at because of being almost guaranteed a starting role or immediate playing time. For me it’s a no brainer.
No one can complain about Shafer being afraid to go after the big time recruits. Look at the schools that are after him.

is the recruit serious about playing here? yeah i mean we really need a big time running back no doubt.. i see howard being used as an athlete. there’s room for a running back.
Remem,her that Howard is being slated for the secondary thus far It looks like a ton of big time programs want him. What makes anyone think that we can beat them out for this kid who probably could point out Syracuse on the map much less come hereWith Jerome leaving we can use an inside power runner. Autry doesn’t look like that in this article.Who knows if AAM will be a factor in the power department?Autry is a reach t best. Bring in Ward,Ishmael and Rooney first Mike Johnson would also be big win for the program.Be realistic first.
Yeah Ron I agree with you. Just think Marrone leaving, we lost Edwards and Smith, which makes the RB’s cupboard seem a bit more bare. Throw in Jerome leaving and we don’t have alot of room for injuries at the RB position.
I think we have a shot, but we have to sell it. With GM on the recruiting trail, Playing on field turf and having a chance to play as a Frosh in a solid conference is something you have to consider.
Phillips and Howard are good pick ups. Hopefully Phillips can turn some heads.

Did you get a chance to watch N/R RB William Stanback run the ball and impose his will against the Baylor Defense? He was a lock at Syracuse until Marrone left for Buffalo.
Here,Syracuse goes after a 4* RB with 20-30 offers on the table from major institutions/programs asking for his services as a talented RB. I don’t know what you’ve read that indicates to you he can’t handle the power running game here. I’ve read and re-read the article and I just don’t come to the same conclusion as you.
I think Myles Autry would be a super get for the program and I hope he decides to come to Syracuse to play football.

This shows how clueless the fizz is in recruiting. Syracuse offered him a long time ago. Like several months ago. Like over the summer. The kid has done interviews with Rivals and Scout and is down to schools like Ohio State, Florida State, etc. He’s not even looking at Syracuse and hasn’t in the last six months. Why anyone comes here for recruiting news is beyond me.

This article is a little deceptive, Autry received his initial offer from SU in 2012, not recently. Also, you didn’t mention that the only reason Syracuse is still on his radar is because he suffered a knee injury and a lot of the big time schools pulled their offers.
Howard can only play DB/S at that with a sure redshirt year. He’s not that kind of freshman that could start right away! Average at RB too!! But starting Freshmen can start up a program on recruiting!!

Autry would be a steal for the CUSE!! Great for “O” on end around and passing game. Maybe also ST’s too!! Better than a NR/2 star hope n pray type!! HCSS and Coach McD need better finish than last years class. It should be better dougie isn’t around to abandon the program!!
Agree with Frank on real accurate facts about recruiting dealing with the CUSE from this site. Real chances of verbal’s are what SU fans are looking for!! I feel that HCSS and Coach McD have over done some recruits that really had no real need to be a CUSE player!! At times they just shot gunned the talent pool to see what happens and the fans get excited. That is poor administration of a program. SU is not there yet like most top 20 programs as of yet any way!!

I really think “The Fizz” should allow readers to write stories from time to time. Could read for quality etc. then publish them.
Would increase breadth of articles and I know some of the readers have some good opinions and info sources.
I have the impression “The Fizz” is just a side job for whoever runs it. If so, open it up and let it be more of a forum.

Easy guys. I agree with all of you in that this is an old offer and not a very realistic one, but lets not jump down the collective Fizz throat. I think we are still in talks with a couple RBs, like Mister. I am not sure we get anywhere with them. Terry I don’t think you can question the closing ability of this staff based on last year’s class. The circumstances were challenging at best. Naes Howard has said himself that he is expected to play safety. Could that become corner given his size, and the way the rest of this class fills out? Yes. Could he fill in at RB in a pinch? Yes. I think HCSS values that versatility in the same way that HCDM did and for that matter in the same way that Tom Coughlin or Bill Belichick do.
Chris, I don’t know who Rooney is, but the SU staff passed on Johnson I think (along with Hallmon). He is a backup plan. He was a heavy lean to Louisville, but now that Strong is gone, I am not sure. I am not too sure, but I think we’ve moved on from Miquel Cotton as well.
@malone – I think I read that mister doesn’t want to be too far from home. So I’m pretty sure ‘Cuse is out.
It’s goin to be an interesting month of recruiting. I don’t think we pick up any Highly touted recruits this year. I’m hoping this bowl win will cause some ripple effect with recruiting and give SS and crew something to sell.
Hope we pick up Ward, Ishmel, Johnson, Enoicy and Johnson,at least.
Malone I’m not questioning HCSS and the staff. I just feel that this years class is better than last years class, but still not a great quality being still in the 60’s!! But that could change with a couple of high 3’s or 4 stars. NR/2 stars are nothing but poison to this program or SU’s staff just isn’t getting it done(damn hate sounding redneck). Building a program is HCSS main goal. Not keeping the status quo!! Howard is not going to make a RB in a pinch either sorry. DB/S maybe!!

@terry This years class is better then last years class?! You don’t say!! That’s shocking, considering the staff had but a few months to put together last years recruiting class. Also, two star/NR recruits are poison to this program? Excuse me? Do you know what NR means? It means they haven’t been evaluated by the recruiting service. What this means is A.) they didn’t go to one of their camps or B.) They didn’t have time to evaluate them because ya know, there’s a lot of damn high school players in the country. Wanna know who was a two star? Jerome Smith, Jason Bromley, Justin Pugh, Phllip Thomas, Shamarko Thomas, Zach Chibane, Chandler Jones, Ryan Nassib, Antwon Bailey, Rob Long… Ya know just a couple first round draft picks, a few NFL players, and a hand full of really impressive starters… Take a hike.
@Nahson – You’ll come to learn, as I did last week, that Terry thinks the only way ‘Cuse will succeed is by getting ONLY 4/5* recruits. Doesn’t matter your argument because he is set in his ways. You can rattle off any 2*/NR that now plays on Sundays, and Terry will dismiss it.
Those 2*/NR recruits play with a chip on their shoulder and make themselves better because of the ooaching staff, utilizing their strengths to a system and by personal drive.
Sorry NR means ability limited as of HSFB player. They are not evaluated because they are DIV II talent not DIV 1 talent-GEZZ!! 2 star means maybe a player for DIV 1 FB, but a secure choice at all. The poison means if you depend on NR/2 star talent like Malone/OC27/NAHSON and other homers like means that after a 12 year period your record is near .500 or below it!! SOUND FAMILIER DOSEN’T IT!! WAKE UP it does not work asking hope and prays(NR/2 star) talent to get you to the promised land. Homers like you guys are satisfied with years of .500 ball and maybe minor bowl games. I’m not and not afraid to challenge the SU program to improve. If you watched last nights NC game you’d think NR/2 star talent could play with either team let alone top 25 teams. NO FRIGGING WAY and you ALL know it! HELL FSU beat SU like a drum for the whole game!! I get tired of your mind-less idea of heart felt talent will get SU to that GAME!! IT WON’T!! And you know it! I never said that I feel SU needs 4/5 star talent(I’ll take them though) I said sprinkle a few 4’s and many 3’s and only a couple of 2-star gambles and lets see for now!! History proves me right. This years class is better than last years, but still lowly compared to other top tabbed programs!!
OC27 I’ll take a bet that the majority of NFL players were 3 star and above that succeeded in the NFL!! Yes a FEW NR/2 stars made it but 3 star and above pollute the NFL now-SORRY!! And will be that way for eternity!!

Terry, I agree with your principle that more 4s are better than less. I do not want to rely on or target NR/2* talent, but I won’t discredit them either, especially if our staff of professional evaluators have determined they are talented enough to wear Orange. Also, while it is easy to target and offer 4/5* talent (as this article exemplifies) it is much harder to land them, and in the absence of thaat, we have to rely on our evaluators finding NR/2*s that can develop and contribute and maybe even excel at the highest level. All I have ever said is that, and that I think our coaches have proven to be capable of making that evaluation based on our on the field and draft day successes.

Agreed Malone!! But SU gets those NR/2 stars because their the crumbs after being rejected by higher rated talent. Right now SU has 2 2 star players that’s enough. But again if failures come down the road then I guess you take the “hope and prayers!! I just don’t see a better class than in the 60’s for 2014!! That’s just is not acceptable if the program is to improve. 50’s is not top 25 by all means but much better. So over the last 12 years our Coaching staffs with the average record really did a poor job. After all SU is just above .500 for that 12 year stretch. Their evaluations kind of stink!!
I noticed the Coach for FSU said “this team has more heart than any team I have ever seen”. What I thought only NR/2 star players only have heart according to this site!! GEE-great talent with heart= NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!! Makes sense to me!!

* TO THE SU HATERS…. there was only one NATIONAL CHAMP this season. Alot of teams like Ala, Ohio St, Auburn, Stanford, Texas are loaded with 4&5 stars, BUT ENDED THE SEASON LOSERS…SU has WON A BOWL GAME 3 of the last 4 seasons, no matter who lined up! That’s success, dumb semantics won’t convince me otherwise !?! 50% of bowl participants were losers, to argue about SU success is irrelevant…#supportwinners

If I remember correctly bigdip,a couple of years ago when Terry was making the same comments about Syracuse Football and getting guys like me upset a little,you were one of the people who agreed with most of what he was saying. What’s up now?Did you have a change of heart? Oh,I know you got a couple of years older,and now you know more than guys that’s been around and done things for over 40 years longer than you’ve been alive.
“Respect your elders” is something that guy’s like Terry,Russell and I learned when we were 5-6 years old. Take some advice young man,you have a lot to learn,GROW UP.
From where I sit,I don’t think Terry was the one that got dropped on his head in the dome next to some stale nachos. I think bigdip that you recieved a concussion from your parents drop kicking you and bouncing you off the cellar walls, hitting your head numerous times on the cellar floor.

John Kinder is transferring to Stony Brook.
This was a long time in coming,the core group of members to this website talked about one or more of the QB’s transferring or playing another position two years ago.
Lets jump forwards here,and take a look at,what were about to have in spring camp. Terrell Hunt,Mitch Kimble,Austin Wilson,AJ Long and Alin Edouard competing for the QB position. I see the same happening again and here’s why.
AJ Long and Alin Edouard will redshirt for 2014 and won’t have a possibilty of starting until 2015. The main competition for the starting position is going to be between Hunt,Kimble and Wilson in 2014. If Austin Wilson wins the job Mitch Kimble will be the backup guy and Terrell Hunt will end up in third place here and either will transfer out for 2016 or graduate in the spring of 2015.
If it does work out to where Wilson and Kimble move to starter and backup positions at QB,they will be our QB’s for the next 4 years unless AJ Long and Alin Edouard plays well enough to take the job from them.
Best case secnario is we keep all 5 QB’s on the team.
worst case scenario is one or two of them will transfer out by the end of the 2015 season.
I wish John Kinder the very best finishing his football career at Stony Brook. He’s a great young man,well spoken and has a great personality that will carry him far in the business world if he doesn’t make the NFL.
Wow Ron, you are really sold on Wilson and Kimble. I am not saying you are wrong, or they are bad, but did they Red Shirt? I am just not aware on that. If they are as good as you say, I hope so, or I am confused as to why neither saw the field this year. You are very sure of their abilities. I look forward to the upcoming offseason to see how you think they stack up still to Hunt or even AJ.
Terry as much as I didnt like Nahsons tone the term NR does mean not rated….some are just poor kids who can’t afford too or don’t have time for the camps and others are maybe not confident? 1 thing though now again as we all now their are jewels there!!2 stars are just that for now but at least they’ve been been evaluated and found just less numbers good/lacking so far!!Some make themselves great and most fall by the wayside.

If it does indeed turn out as I’ve stated,I will tell you and everyone else as to why I’m staying with Wilson as being the starter in 2014.
Austin Wilson and Mitch Kimble did “red shirt” in 2013. I heard a lot of comments about the strenght of Wilsons arm and how well he was running the practice squad all of last season. I know for sure it’s going to be real interesting
I’ve watched some NFL games this year and then watch the experts tell us why certain things turned out the way they did.
Terry has mentioned in the past that you need to be a pocket passer if you were to succeed in the NFL. Well if your were listening to the experts they all agreed.
A dual threat QB doesn’t last long in the NFL and the examples they were using was Michael Vick and RG111. Donavon McNabb didn’t last long before the Eagles and Redskins turned their backs on him. Dual threat QB’s might work at the college level and make fans happy when they do something spectacular but in the NFL they have short career’s.
Austin Wilson and Mitch Kimble are both pocket passing QB’s who can get the ball down field when it’s called for. Make no mistake about what’s happening up on the hill,the dynamics on Syracuse Football are changing. We have a couple,no we have a group of receivers coming in for 2014 that will change the way football has been played here in the past. I’m looking for some fireworks next season and if either Wilson or Kimble become the starter will break all of Ryan Nassibs records set a years ago.
Remember what Coach McDonald told us all,he wanted to run the spread offense and use the pistol formation as his style of offense. In year two of this coaching staff,their recruiting the athletes that is going to make it work.
I want everyone to know that what I’ve said is my opinion and a lot of speculation on my part. My money in on Austin Wilson to win the QB battle in the spring of 2014.

I know,I know,I’m a homie and believe in the Orange. I agree I carried on a little in my last post. But damn things are really looking good at Syracuse. Wouldn’t you agree?
In McNabb’s case, he did a pretty good job of turning himself into a pocket passer, and I am not sure I would call his time in Philly short. The sad part of that for me was that his magic, his charisma, his persona came in part from his style of play and the NFL game took that out of him. Other than that, you are 100% right. Every year or so, there is a mobile guy who will wow the league with his elusiveness, but in the end that part of their game wears quick in the NFL and they are left battered and lacking the other skills needed to prolong a career. I do see the position evolving a bit to where a QB needs mobility in the backfield and a legit threat to run in order to make a read option work. Also, the ability to throw accurately on the run is more important.
