College: four years to explore oneself in a variety of ways. It is the time for someone to find out who they really are, and what their long term plans are. Students do this in the classroom, and on the gridiron.
Former Syracuse quarterback John Kinder is trying a new position. He’s officially moving to wide receiver, where he will catch passes rather than throw them. The quarterback competition now consists of Terrel Hunt, Charley Loeb, and Drew Allen. Scott Shafer said he was proud of Kinder for putting the team‚Äôs success first.
Kinder was near the bottom of Shafer’s list to start under center against Penn State on Aug. 31. Hunt has been practicing with the first team while Allen, the Oklahoma transfer, is working with the second team. Charley Loeb practiced with the second team behind Ryan Nassib for much of last season.
Once upon a time we wondered who would be the next Syracuse QB after Nassib: Johnny Miller or John Kinder. Turns out neither. Kinder is missing out on the opportunity to quarterback, a position he’s played throughout his career, but he is more concerned about playing time and helping the team win.
This says a lot about this young man. He’s not a selfish player. He is willing to learn a new position and help Shafer make a decision on his starting quarterback. Shafer had nothing but positive words about him:
“John Kinder, I just love him to death. He came to me. He wants to play. He wants an opportunity.
“It was a tough deal for John because he’s always been a quarterback his whole life. I think it’s always easier to move back if we had something that we had to do. But it’s hard to try to get a kid up to speed if he doesn’t get the reps in the meeting room as much as on the field.”
He’s mature. He hasn’t taken a snap for the Orange in his three other seasons, but did play on special teams in the games against Stony Brook and USC.
Kinder has good size to be a wide receiver as well, standing at 6‚Äô2‚Äù and 187 lbs. Orange Nation has always marveled at his athleticism when it’s been on display such as the Spring Games. The biggest thing he has to work on now is learning the routes and improving his hands. But with his attitude and natural gifts, it’s not hard to imagine Kinder having some success there.
This is a good move for Kinder for getting some playing time and helping the team. There was likely no way he would ever get any snaps at quarterback. The wideout position is in flux after the departures of Marcus Sales and Alec Lemon. Give him credit. He approached Shafer about finding a way onto the field. Here’s hoping it works out for him.

John isn’t the first QB wearing orange to change his position to gain playing time at Syracuse and I’m sure he won’t be the last.
Drew Allen and Charlie Loeb will be gone after this year,automatically giving Terrill Hunt the job in 2014. Let’s all hope Terrill uses this time(2013) to really learn the position. And if he doesn’t,I can see the same thing repeating itself again in 2014 with Hunt,Kimble,Wilson and Long.
Maybe he can be the next Kevin Johnson.
Thinking the same thing Duany. Johnson made a good career out of it with 7 years in the pros after his stint at WR at SU. Let’s see if Kinder can take a crack at it too.
A great move for an unselfish young man. He will do fine at WR and remember back when SU had to choose between Mc Nabb and K Johnson… Good luck John and here to your first TD Catch

This is a great move for the program as a whole. Kinder is a natural quarterback, but he may surprise and be a great wide receiver. This is good…he sets a good example for the rest of the team. Don’t be selfish and help the team win. That’s exactly what Kinder did. Good for him.

I went to Fan Fest today, and as promised, this is how I feel about the team.
My unoffical report;
I was glad to see a full squad on the field holding practice today. They’re big and fast,swarm to the ball and boy are they going to surprise people this year.
People have some concerns about the offensive line–my opinion is that this unit is as good as last year.They’re big and they’re strong. Devante McFarlane broke off left guard and went approximately 75-80 yards for a TD. Once in the backfield no one touched him. the OL is going to open holes for the likes of Jerome Smith,Tyson Gulley,Devante McFarlane,Georg Morris II and Adonis Amean Moore. They used Ashton Broyld out of the the slot,hit him going over the middle and went for a 25-30 yd gain. Broyld will be playing quite a bit this year. Looking for big things from Ashton.
Qb situation to me is settled. The starter is going to be 6’4″ 256 lb Drew Allen with the backup being Terrell Hunt.
Troy Green will not have a chance to play QB. Mitch Kimble and Austin Wilson is bigger than what I thought and looked good in warm ups.
The offensive unit(showing hospitality) will invite all opposing teams into the dome this year.
The defense looks awesome. LB’s led by Marquis Spruill is going to be good,very good. DL will be led by Jay Bromley,DE Ron Thompson is going to be in the opposing backfield alot this year. DB’s are fast and will swarm to the ball.
There are two players that we all should keep an eye on over the next 3-4 years. Both are on the OL,both are N/R players that are considered projects and both are big and strong. If they continue to improve on what I saw of them today,in four years will become NFL players. Good job goes to 6’7″ 303 lb Jamal McGloster and 6’6″ 317 lb Jon Burton.
We have enough players at all positions to rotate them so that the players can stay fresh.
Remember what I said about the offensive unit inviting the teams into the dome for a game? Well the defensive unit is going to follow them in after they lock the doors and proceed to kick their ever loving butts.
Conclusion folks the team looks good. We have size and speed on both sides of the ball. This team will be in a bowl come December or maybe January.

I forgot to mention Durell Eskridge,Luke Arciniega,Oliver Vigille,Brisley Estime,Julin Whigham,Jeremiah Kobena,Nick Robinson,Zian Jones and macky Macphearson.
There’s going to be improvement in the special teams this year folks. Big improvement.

I also went to the spring game and was very impressed with their size. Not sure which QB will be starting but the Wilson kid throws a nice ball. I agree with Ron this team is bowl bound easily. The running game and offensive line looks very good. I don’t know why people are questioning the offensive line. The lbs and secondary are very good and I mean very good. The linebacking unit is the best they have had in a long long time. The question marks remain the WRs and DEs if we can get some play out of them watch out. Kobena looked very quick as usual and Flemming looks big.

The one thing I noticed about the QB’s. No one has mentioned anything to date about Drew Allens running ability. Did you notice the upper body on Jerome Smith? Massive!!!!!

But I still see issues with this team. 6-6 I feel is the best for 2013!! QB/OL/WR are weak spots as of now!! PSU/NW are one hell of a start of a season. PSU is down yes, but still its PSU and NW is ranked. Don’t forget Clemson and FSU too!! I see loses there as well.

Blacknall did verbal via twitter to Rutgers. Good news is that is one less spot for guys we are both on. RU hired his favorite assistant/track coach. Must have helped. Blacknall said the guy is like a big brother to him. Custis is up to visit tomorrow and I think it’s between us and Pitt. Roberts, the OL you mentioned seems to be getting a lot of pressure from friends and family to stay home, but I still think he leans Orange. I think his recent cancel was financial. He will delay his verbal until he makes an official Sept. 13. That’s the Wagner game and we need a good showing on he field and in the stands as Deion Hallmon from Fla will supposedly be there too. He said he will decide by 8/24 but visiting us 9/13. Seems a bit off to me. Sykes and Cotton both still seem interested, but need the officials (financial). Very interested in Ishmael, the WR from Fla. haven’t heard much from the RBs but Witter still mentions or retweets us. New OL prospect from Wisconsin seems happy to hear from us. As for 2015, we are in early on a RB from Texas, a TE from NH, and an OL from NJ all who seem to be very happy we are interested.
Also for the record, a lot of people are very optimistic following Holley’s visit. May still be a long shot, but he is tight with Hunt, is a huge hoops fan, and goes to school with Whitehead, a hoops guard we are hot for.

I come away from Fan Fest of Friday knowing that Syracuse won’t be throwing the ball much. I believe the OL is going to be as good as last years team that will open holes for the running backs to pound the opposition. I don’t believe we’ll see a lot of deep balls thrown down field. I see Syracuse using more of those short 5-6 yd dump passes over the middle to the tightends and swing passes to the running backs coming out of the backfield. Look for Tyson-Gulley to be real active out of that formation. Ashton Broyld joining the recievers is going to be a treat for everyone.
I believe Syracuse will try and balance it’s offense trying to get a 50-50 split between the run and pass. I didn’t see to much of the new offense(pro sets)during the practice. Maybe the coaches are waiting until the Penn St. game to show us the new spread offense. Remember Terry “OLD IS NEW”. At times it looks like Syracuse is going back and using the offense in used during their glory days.
Ron I’m talking about Winfield and Avant-sorry. Still not crazy about SUs starting WR’s. Yes great size but they both don’t scare ya at all. Heard nothing since camp about these two. Heard more about Cooper not coming to SU!!
They had better throw down field. 9 players are there to stop ya at the line=running game. So you HAVE to have a quality passing game in modern college ball to suceed!! You have to off-set the other “D” in order to win!! Another issue that has not been mentioned much is SU’s WRs hands. Way too many drops last few years. That better improve or those 5/6 yrd passes are a no go. SU’s WR are not scary, but air it out you never know. Many great running attacks have been stopped by being out-numbered by the “D” at the line. For SU to be 6-6 or better they better be over 50% in the air. I’d rather see HCSS throw and lose than run,run,run and punt.
PTG(yes I was wrong about him at times), but he still scares me. I prefer Smith for security than PTG. I still have night-mares about PTG doing something that will haunt the program. Staff needs to work on his security issues. dougie did last year!!

Like all of you guys I follow the recruiting trail religiously. And at the start of the new coaching changes I was extremely excited, but its late summer and the result to me are disappointing!! All the talent looking SU way this early spring and HCSS’s loud excitement got me going. Well HCSS hasn’t changed at all(thank God) but the talent pool though decent is not good enough for low 50’s. SU is # 66(rivals) and falling!! Its early, but that’s for other programs too!! Next year I’ll be more leery about the staff’s expectations.
And enough of this no talented QB’s walking on at SU ENOUGH ALREADY ok!! Have his dad donate to the SU facilities instead!!

Wasn’t Clemson ranked when WVA beat them 88-0? They were ranked when we beat them in 1995/96 Gator Bowl too. How is it that the odds makers having(a 12/13 ranked)them as one of the teams to make a run for the national championship,only an 8 pt favorite over lowly Syracuse? I’m going this afternoon to get my 3 month supply of meds. I’ll be ready no matter what happens.
About the construction that’s going on on RT 81 North. It sounds like two bridges are closed for resurfacing,and will reopen August 19th.
LSU is not the dominate team that they once were either. FSU rallied in the second half of their game against Clemson last year for 38 points and sent them home with their tails between their legs.

I don’t think Penn St is unbeatable either Russ.
Hallmon is very tough to gauge. I think he’s getting the hints that spots are filling up and like I mentioned when Ish put off his announcement, I think it scared Hallmon. I think we have a legit shot at him and he is scheduling a visit 9/13. That can’t be bad even though he said he will have decided before then. Everybody thinks he either goes with the first visit or the last. RU pushed him off to December. That means he’s on hold and I only hope we convince him/he can’t wait that long. On Ish, I am feeling the same scenario, but I think Hilliman is not RU bound. That is a gut reaction based on an interview I saw with Blacknall after his committment. Never sure, but if RU plays Ish like Hallmon, it may push both of them into our hands. I like our chances with Steve Ishmael and Custis really enjoyed his visit. I think he was a Pitt lean and now we’ve really made him think. If Pitt falters on his visit even slightly, I think he’s ours. His brother seems to love SU after the visit. I don’t want to get too wrapped into Holley only because he is the kind of prospect that seems to burn us year in adn year out, but that visit has to have helped our chances and maybe gets Mavety in the door, even though I am pretty confident he is OSU. I still think Roberts is ours to lose. I think the kid from Wisconsin is also a real possibility. The 2015 OL kid out of Union City NJ is very interesting. His HS coach went to Miami and that could help us assuming Miami doesn’t come calling (ACC ties).

Who’s the he? I don’t know of anyone on the list I mentioned that is a Rutgers verbal. Hallmon was mentioned as a sure thing for him a little while back, but he hasn’t done it. Some have said he tried and told him he had to wait. I don’t know how true that is, but that is also the story I have heard regarding Ish Witter. Rutgers wants Jonathan Hilliman. He’s a big RB from NJ with lots of options. Ollison has been said to be in this same waiting pattern too. I don’t feel confident either way with Ollison, but Witter and Hallmon could wind up ours.
I believe that I read an article on rivals website saying that Hilliman was locked into Rutgers. I apologize with the on going dicussions on Deion Hallmon and Jonathan Hilliman, I was getting a little confused at times.

Only a full Dome will make a difference for the CUSE!!! From my beloved in-laws PSU is playing for pride and their HC is good at his job and down the road he will be a HC in NFL. They say pride is their motivation. That is a dangerous team. NW is better than the last time SU played them and SU lost to them. I just wished SU didn’t have PSU and NW back to back!!

Hallmon and Ish are quite on the site. So I really can’t get into them at all yet. If they were SU interested I’d see it. I have heard of them but not excited about them because of little ink on them. We’ll see!! Example of that is Mavety he given out more ink than these two combined!! Your right again Terry,I am using Syracuses past history in making my prediction. I’ve seen Syracuse rise to the occasion(when challenged)in beating teams like Nebraska,Penn St,Wisconsin,a tie against Auburn in the Sugar Bowl,Texas,Michigan,WVA and Louisville,Miami,Verginia Tech,Boston College,Maryland and especially the game against Missouri,we’ve played Northwestern tough and Clemson.
What really gets me Terry are the fans that believes Syracuse should play all of the local high school teams and drop from D1 to either a D11 or maybe a D111 program. I’ve listened to those arguments over the last 35-40 years and laugh at the people who makes those statements. It shows me that they don’t know Syracuse Football or they don’t know about football at all. A man that I worked with for 20 years before I retired always told me that Syracuse would never ever win the National Championship ever again because of their size and because of being a private school,they just couldn’t compete with the large state run schools.
I’ve never bought into that argument,thanked him for his opinion and said goodby.
My problem Terry is I expect Syracuse to do good every year.

I looked him up on the rivals website again,I don’t think he’s interested in Syracuse because we haven’t offered him a scholarship yet!!!!!!Could that be a mistake? I also looked for him on scout.com and he’s not listed there either.

When I first reported about Syracuse not offering Hilliman a scholarship I also mentioned a big RB that Shafer is after. The most amazing thing that I’ve noticed is,no one has mentioned his name on this website,or at the very least,I can’t remember reading about him here.
Shafer is interested in 6’0″ 221 lb 4* RB Donte Thomas-Williams out of Durham NC.
Maybe that’s why we didn’t offer Hilliman a scholarship.
From what I’m reading on Custis,he has Syracuse as his #1 school.

I am not sure why SU didn’t try with the NJ RB, maybe this NC kid you mention, but I think they might have put those eggs in the Ollison basket. That one has me confused. I think he is PSU or Wisconsin. We still have Wheatley and we have Ollison. The concern I have with Coach Smith (and here’s where I sound like Terry) is that he seems to like little scat backs (just a gut). I think what really makes our running game work is the change of pace that PTG and Rome represent to each other. I would hate to see that become one dimensional.
Custis still has feelings for Pitt. We are in front, but Pitt has last licks.Ultimately I feel good about him. Mavety and Applefield I don’t hold much faith in. I think the only way we get a shot at Mavety is if we pull off the miracle with Holley. Mavety has not even visited. Witter should just get on with it, but now he’s into his Missouri offer it seems. Honestly I have not heard much from him at all lately.
