Syracuse football isn’t national championship contender, but that doesn’t mean some of the nation‚Äôs best high school players are ignoring the Orange. Syracuse has already received a commitment from A.J. Long, a member of ’14, to play quarterback, but SU has also made an offer to 6’2″ signal caller Sean White from University School in Ft. Lauderdale.
No, it’s not that Shaun White, the Flying Tomato. But he might be just as exciting to watch.¬†Long and White recently played together at the Elite 11 in Columbus.¬†White spoke very highly of the Syracuse commit, but noted the different style of play. White is considered a 3-star quarterback by Rivals, and is looking at both SU’s old nemesis (WVU) and new ones (NC State).¬†
White completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,670 yards as a junior, tossing 32 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. White thinks of himself similar to Ryan Nassib. He is a pocket passer, but when necessary can use his legs to pick up a first down.
White’s numbers are impressive, and plenty of other schools have made offers. White has scholarships from BC, Cincinnati, FIU, Hawaii, Houston, Miami (OH), USF, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Western Kentucky, and Western Michigan, according to Rivals.
He also has California and Wisconsin on his list, and plans to visit both this summer.
On the current status of his decision process:
“I’d like to commit before my senior season because as a quarterback, spots fill up.”
White has been interested in Syracuse because of offensive coordinator George McDonald, who used to be the wide receivers coach at Miami.
‚ÄúI knew him when he was at the University of Miami down here and now that he‚Äôs up there and he‚Äôs offensive coordinator, that‚Äôs another thing that is attractive.”
Like another SU’s local target J.R. Zazzara, the Dome is something that tend to attract recruits.
“Playing in the Carrier Dome – that’s a real cool place from what I’ve heard. I’ve heard it’s a real tough environment to play at on the road and that’s cool.”
White‚Äôs family resides in Boca Raton, which is only about an hour from Miami – a place SU will play in the ACC. There’s also Florida State, Clemson and other southern schools making it easy for White‚Äôs parents to watch him play. While proximity to home is something White will consider, playing in the ACC could even the playing field for the Orange.

Let’s see here,John Kinder and Terrel Hunt will graduate in 2014. We have Long,Wilson and Kimble coming here in 2013. Adding one more QB(Sean White)to the class of 2014 would definately make things interesting over the next 4-5 years

100%agree,QBs are so valuable you can never have enough good ones!Unbelieveable how 1 year can make so much difference in the quality of recruit who would consider us!!Just on the quality of recruit we should be improved w/o even playing a game yet!I’ve never in 12 years been so optimistic about our future potential and happy for our loyal fans like Smitty,Derek and Bkln and so many other long suffering diehards who I don’t mention enough!The ones I’m not mentioned we already know who we are…but the whole Fizzfam has reason to look forward to holding our heads high again!!
We’re now finding out that the reason Ron “Sugar Bear” Thompson was switched from TE to DE was Ron saw the shortage/lack of players at DE and had some experience in high school playing that position,VOLUNTEERED his services to help the team. Ron is 6’4″ and weighs 256 lbs should make for a real tough DE.
Could we see him possibly play both positions this year? Stay tuned,it should be real fun to watch Ron Thompson play ball this year.

I absolutely agree. This kid clearly has talent from looking at the other teams that have made offers. He’s a unique player and looking at the 2014 recruits, Sean White is like Ryan Nassib, A.J. Long is not and JR Zazzara, if he decided to play football and is given an offer, then Shafer and his staff have a mobile option.
Three quarterbacks is great and it gives the coaches many options to choose from.

Smitty-O line (B) no way. Pugh was a beast. You saw what happen he came back. O-line=C(maybe). WR might surprise us. I think the talent at WR now(before FR show) is lacking. Possession yes but breakaway no way. So I’ll give them a C-. Maybe better if the youngsters show up!! All other grades are decent!
I agree Pugh was a beast and maybe I’m being optimistic but I do like our offensive line. With a very good backfield lets hope they can open some holes.

I think it’s too early to tell. These are good preseason grades and I agree with most.
The A for RBs might be a stretch in my mind. PTG will have to help lead the way if Syracuse wants to be in a bowl game. Who knows how the change to the ACC impacts all of this.

everyone was complaining after graduation that Syracuse was losing a lot of talent(both sides of the ball) and wasn’t going to be able to compete in the ACC.
My comment to all who complained last year was,Syracuse had the talent on the team, standing on the sidelines waiting their turn to play. We lost nothing,we just reloaded. I agree with “Smitty Section 129″. We are going to turn heads this fall and surprise a whole lot of different people.

It brings back memories of the 1996 Gator Bowl people. Clemson was a heavy favorite in that game too.
Let the games begin. I hope that Clemson brings their “A” game,their going to need all the energy they have if they plan on beating Syracuse.
Lets put Clemson on senior day I think the DEs will suprise people they seem to feel like a huge weakness but I see them being rebuilt with Thompson jucos a James Washington linebacker type player who lives down or whoever but they will certainly take the blame for a secondary that will be picked apart by Clemson I really want that game with ebo and chad Kelly and all them but Boyd and Watson and them are a scary offense
Barring Sammy Watkins becoming ineligible, I can’t wait to watch either Reddish or Lyn go up against him. Should either one of them have a great game against him, watch for their draft stock to soar.
Also, I am really hoping for Wayne Morgan to put it together during the summer. I always paid particular attention to him on special teams and he did not disappoint. Incredible speed with a thick build that lends himself to either safety position as opposed to corner, think the move to safety will pay dividends.
I would gladly throw summer away to begin fall and get to the opener. Penn State played out of their minds last year considering. Their coach is very intelligent and his staff has proven to be strong recruiters.
Although I won’t give grades, there are some interesting thoughts given. But the strength of the team is RB. The only perfect grade on the team, production wise… would be the returning (2000 + yards from scrimmage) backfield. That’s quality football anywhere in the nation.
Clemson: if SU downs Clemson, theoretically, they can beat the majority of the league? The Qb situation will tell alot… if Hunt hits 60% of his passes, SU is bowling… If the Oklahoma kid bombs, upon winning starting spot, we win 5 games.
Seem’s like 4* WR Freddy Canteen will go/commit to RU according to info and they were always his frontrunner!Maybe we get KJ Wms soon?We should pick up a couple this month!
RBs definitely an A. Returning Smith and PTG, as was stated earlier, and Morris is excellent as well. McFarlane had a great Spring as well, and you still have the likes of AAM and Broyld.
TEs is a position of strength and depth as well, so I would bump that grade up a bit, and our WRs should remain a strong group with West, Clark, Funderburk and some of these new recruits that McDonald pulled in, although I don’t know how much they’ll be able to contribute early on.
@Derek,I think with the solid appearence of our running game and solid TEs a couple “next level”WRs would be great and I’m still concerned with our OL!!What do you think?
The OL is still bigger stronger faster than what’s been fielded in recent years. The other factor helping the OL is a mobile QB this season, hopefully! Right now Hunt’s arms are looking like the Rock’s… if he hasn’t lost any speed or athleticism, while gaining muscle, he’s the season’s x-factor!
* superior to moderate Qb play would help all facets of the offense.
