D.A.’s Knee-Jerk Reaction: Syracuse Same Ol’ Same Ol’ Loss in Piscataway

The Orange once again turns the ball over to beat itself.

Mel Evans/AP

Syracuse took all that good will and supposed momentum from the win over Pitt and dumped it in the Piscataway River. Once again, turnovers kills SU. A 23-15 loss leaves the Orange at 2-4 on the season, 1-1 in the Big East. Here’s my instant analysis.

  • This game will forever be remembered for the blocked FG/TD, a 10-point swing SU never recovered from. Doug Marrone is the special teams coach. This program has had some of the worst special teams in the nation. And in one fell swoop, special teams may have cost the Orange a game. Blocked FGs are pathetic, but when it’s returned for a score it’s unacceptable. It should’ve been 10-7 Orange with SU’s defense playing very well. Instead, it was 14-7 Rutgers. Terrible.
  • Nathaniel Hackett embarrassed himself with pitiful red zone play-calling. Down 23-7, 1st and Goal from RU’s 10 yard line in the 4th quarter, here’s what SU’s offensive series looked like: ¬†INC to Lemon. INC to West. INC to Lemon. INC (pass interference). First and Goal from the 2: INC. INC to Sales. Ameen-Moore loss of a yard. Time out. INC to Lemon. Rutgers stopped 7 plays from inside the 10. I’m choking on my own puke.
  • On the bright side, David Stevens proved to be a nice target all game. He showed sure hands, a big body to take on tacklers, and decent agility for a big man.
  • So did Ashton Broyld steal cologne from the Carousel Mall, TVs from Nassib’s apartment or just forget to feed Marrone’s cat when Doug was out recruiting for a few days? Honestly, what kind of ridiculous dog house is he in? There’s NO way you can get one of the most explosive players on your team into a game when you score a total of 22 offensive points over two weeks? This is bordering on absurd.
  • Terrible INT by Nassib with a final chance to tie the game with just over 2:00 left. Throwing from deep in your own end into tripe coverage? What kind of decision is that? Give your team a chance. Make smart plays. Don’t try to do too much.
  • Let’s combine turnovers and penalties and call them KYPs (Kill Yourself Plays). SU had 4 TOs, 7 penalties, and a blocked FG. Rutgers had 0 TOs, 4 penalties. So Syracuse went on the road and tried to beat a ranked team with 12 KYPs to 4. No chance. Still looking for SU to play disciplined football four years after Marrone took over. Gimme a break.
  • To give Orange Nation hope moving forward, SU proved it could move the ball through the air on these guys. For all the credit RU’s defense gets, Nassib threw for over 300 yards on it (but also made some horrific mistakes). The ground game was bottled up all day. 32 carries for 57 yards, less than 2 yards per carry, and Nassib gave away two INTs and couldn’t punch it in from 8 plays inside the 10.
  • This whole game sucked even worse because it was Rutgers. Had a chance to beat a ranked team, a rival no less, on the road to go to 2-0 in the Big East. Blew it. That’s how the SU/RU series ends. A win would’ve given Syracuse some breathing room in the quest for 6 wins. Now, it needs to go 4-2 the rest of the way including the trip to Mizzou. Can the Orange go 4-1 in the Big East? Uh oh.

Why on earth with 8 shots from inside the 10 and 4 of them inside the 2 did’nt we BULL it in??Terrible STs play from us “as usual” and thats were the game was lost!!I can’t blame Nassib he was our only real weapon!!He ran into a buzzsaw!!

I’m gonna rant here a little bit because I’m so disappointed/annoyed/angry/etc. about the outcome of today’s game. First of all, I think you are onto something with the KYP’s that should actually legit be a new term that commentators use or statisticians put in the box scores. 7 penalties for 43 penalty yards is bad enough, but add in 2 INT’s, 2 fumbles lost (out of 3 total fumbles), a missed 50-yard field goal (it’s long but ya know sometimes you need to make a play like that…), and a blocked 35-yard field goal returned for a TD… COMPLETELY INEXCUSABLE!!! I’m sick and tired of Marrone preaching “accountability” and ball control after 4 years when we still don’t have it. We still have way too many penalties, turnovers, special teams boneheaded errors, and Alec Lemon’s 2 or 3 dropped passes didn’t help either! I agree completely that the play calling on that series inside the RU 10 was horrible. If it were me, I’d start with a draw run to get around 3 or 4 yards to at least pretty much cut the distance in half. Then I’d set up a screen pass that should get you a few more yards on the outside and gives you the chance to get out of bounds to stop the clock. Then I’d throw a quick strike from like 3 yards out into the end zone. And when they had 1st & Goal from the 2 and did 2 passes in a row before putting AAM in the game was dumb too… everyone knew what they would be doing when Ameen-Moore came in on 3rd down… and then Lemon dropping that 4th down catch in the end zone was terrible too. Only positive from this game was for the 2nd game in a row I liked our run defense against another good running team (certainly have come along way since allowing Stony Brook to run up 200 yards against us). Our pass defense was good too minus that one 43 yard passing play in the 1st quarter. Problem once again was in ST & offensive execution when it really matters. At this point I think bad play calling is on the coaches but those turnovers are on the players. So frustrating to watch this team play week after week with this inconsistency. Had a great chance to pick up a big win today and now I’m not even sure if we can make a bowl game again this year. Not making a bowl when you have a 5th year starting QB with 4 years of experience including 3 years of starting experience is unacceptable. And I completely agree… not finding a way to utilize their best offensive weapon/athlete Ashton Broyld is awful! Jerome Smith ran well in the 1st half but disappeared in the 2nd half (albeit because they had to pass a lot being down) but PTG ran terribly today. They also don’t get the ball to Marcus Sales enough, he made 1 catch in the 1st half and then made only a few more late in the 4th quarter again. He’s the best receiver… GET HIM THE BALL MORE! Ok I’m done with my rant now… that stuff just had to be said…

Russell, you can certainly blame Nassib. I don’t know why you defend him. Nassib was terrible. He wasn’t our only good weapon. He is not the QB to lead us. Ill take Charley Loeb or John Kinder right now. STOP saying Nassib is a weapon, he’s a craptastic QB! ENOUGH MAN, ENOUGH!

@ Jimmy C. i couldn’t disagree more . If the O-line gives Ryan time , he rips it up . And he still had over 350 today , so maybe all of those dropped passes would have indeed , made the difference . not to mention they entire defence didn’t really wake up untill the 4th .

Accountability starts and stops at the top. I personally like HCDM. He really is a good guy with integrity beyond reproach. However, he is simply not getting the job done. In theory – and some will justifiably argue to the contrary – college athletes are not paid for their performance – college coaches, however, are.

I’ll make a business analogy here – if this was a struggling or failing business, we would soon see signs in front of the Carrier Dome that would read, “Now hiring”, “Under New Management”, “Going Out Of Business” or “New and Improved”.

Since the latter is not applicable…

It might be time to start talking about the end of the Doug Marone era at the Cuse. His in game management is terrible. The offensive play calling is crap. Our offensive coordinator, Hacket….should be called Hatchet!!!! I thought he was some kind of offensive genius..with pro experience. I thought we would see an offense that could game plan against a Defense, spot trends, self scout…and produce a high scoring, fun to watch offense. Quite the opposite.
Our defense seems to game plan for the offenses we face…give different looks…..our offense is bad! It starts with nassib. As a 5th year guy, he should be tearing up the league. He holds the ball too long!!!!!!!! Get rid of the thing…. Play calling doesn’t help him out.. Sales, and Lemmon and West are all good slant route runners…especially Sales…..hit that quick slant..with a 3 step drop…..Where is our tight end? Stevens was good today….Hacket needs to help his QB out more…..with some quick , 3 step pass plays….bubble…yes I said bubble screens. Our screen game sucks!!!! Other than the no huddle quick tempo thing….I don’t
see offensive innovation here…….offense starts with the QB……We need a highly regarded…talented QB to come to the Cuse….and get some players around him. The sad part is that none of the QB’s on our roster now…have that star potential…Broyld…..I never seen him pass, he has the athleticism…but can he throw the ball, if so…he could be our man….but they are misusing him….

What I fear the most is Dr Gross sees a game lost by 8 points to a ranked team and SU played terrible. Not wanting to pay over a million to HCDM/dougie for nothing, he’ll let dougie stay one more year!!! Can you believe this poor excuse of a coach has made over “4” million $$$$ so far. Why??? Are you trolls still babbling good things about your man dougie now???

Very disappointed again. I like most of us is a a fan of marrone but we continue to outplay teams but find a way to lose. I agree hacketts play calling stinks. Down on the goal from the 2 yard line run the tank three straight plays he ll score, instead we throw it on 1st and 2nd down then run it come on. Doug I’m sorry but since you took over the special teams stinks. Rene is not the answer we need someone who can take it to the house. Kobena, broyld, morgan someone. Defense played very well again. Nassib as I always have said throws a nice ball but but has no pocket prescence and fumbles to much. Im sick of the losing. Where is broyld he must of done something wrong, maybe he told marrone he needs to be in the game. How can we be so bad on special teams and the wr s keep dropping passes.

Marrone needs to be fired today, NOW. Dr. Gross needs to prove that he cares about this program and go after Bobby P. I don’t care if it costs the university 3.5 million a year and I don’t care how he does it. Just get him and get Marrone out of here. I don’t care if Rutgirls is ranked 1st in the country, we should beat them every time we play them.

  13. Dr. bill Avatar
    Dr. bill

If Marrone stays, he needs to fire Hackett. The problem is this: This was a key year for Doug. If we don’t go Bowling this year, he has one more year to change his boss’s mind. His lame duck status will affect every decision he makes next year: 1) He will not fire his OC, 2) He will go with the most conservative of the QB options, not the one with the most risk…but the most upside! Can we really count on these two incoming freshman QB’s to be dynamic enough to win for a lame duck coach?

I want to see Broyld play some QB!!! Can he trow at all. This should be his year to play some plays as a basic QB..run the spread, run some option…..I want to see what this kid can do. We really need a dynamic dual threat QB who can make plays with his legs…..
With Pugh back, our Offensive line doesn’t look that bad. many of those sacks…are coverage sacks…..Nassib needs to get the ball out quicker.

I like our defense……..It is a shame our offense is letting us down. We need to hire a special teams coach!!!! Marrone, needs to stick to o line. Maybe doug should take over the play calling. Remember when spece was OC….and Marrone took over the play calling ..and the offense seemed to move. If he was OC of the Saints…..he should be able to call his own plays and have Saint like results in College. I think he just had the title of OC. Shawn Payton was really the OC as it related to play calling and game planning.

Stop wasting downs by running PTG up the middle. If you’re going to do it, pick a bigger back…

Actually… Just stop sucking with the play calls Hackett.

    Defense looked great again..

So much to say, but is anyone really listening on the hill. Marrone talks a good game, but has yet to deliver. Nassib does put up numbers, but they are usually when the game is pretty much out of reach. Not sure why Broyld hasn’t seen the field the last 2 games. If Marrone is trying to prove a point by not playing him because he hasn’t practiced well or he thinks he isn’t ready it is a mistake. He will head to the unemployment line with that kind of thinking. I don’t know how he keeps his job especially heading to the ACC next year. How much more is Gross going to take and still tell us that we are on the upswing. I haven’t even got into the recruiting which has been awful. I long for the days when Pasqualoni could go into Florida and get the the 4th best guy at his position who wanted to play instead of sitting at Florida, Florida St., or The U. I can’t remember the last year we had a guy who had a chance to break one on a punt or kick off. It is so frustrating right now. What the hell happened to this once proud program

I think Nancy Cantor & Dr. Gross has more to worry about right now than getting rid of Doug Marrone.
What are the ramifications going to be for the University following the stabbing within the dome at Midnight Madness on Friday night?

The fans are not showing up now because of the poor performance of the football team add to it the fact that they have to start worrying about their personal safety, inside and outside of the dome. I think it’s going to devastating. Crime in that area is up,it’s almost reported daily on the local news that someone is either getting stabbed or shot. NOT GOOD,NOT GOOD AT ALL.

Bottom line is marrone isn’t going any where soon. They are never going to head into the ACC with a new coach. The recruiting is getting better, but marrone needs to be held accountable as well and needs to stop being so political in his answers. Tell us why broyld isn’t playing, tell us why you think Rene is the best kick returner or punt returner on the team because no one else sees it. Yes the refs screwed us again and I still don’t get with instant replay how they get things wrong. Rene was clearly down. We all are frustrated and it hurts when we are the better team but lose. If clark is the fastest kid on the team play him at punt returner. If this team continues to shot itself in the foot then stop trying to score on 10-15the play drives that usually we mess up by a int, penatly or fumble. Throw it deep sometime, go for the homerun. Frustrated in section 129

@Orange89,What the hell happened to this once proud program?
I want to answer that question by simply saying “we got rid of a damn good coach when we got rid of Coach Pasqualoni”. Coach Pasqualoni bled orange and worked 24/7 12 months out of the year on improving the Syracuse program. For some it wasn’t enough, they started to complain and holler about getting rid of him,the university brought in a guy from California to fire him and you wonder what happened to this once proud program.

The fans got what they craved for and look at us now. We’re starting the same all over again. Some people just don’t know when to keep their mouths shut or learn from their mistakes. How sad this situation has become.

Like I said I think the majority of us like coach marrone but are getting frustrated with the overall results. He stresses discipline but the team continues to make mental mistakes. Nassib started strong but has gone back to the happy feet, fumbling and overthrowing the wr or throwing it to hard. I love how the defense is playing though. Marrone is obvious frustrated and he should be.

What happens when Cantor goes in 2014? Does another new chancellor bring in another new AD? Does that AD bring a new coach? Did I really read that we should bring in Petrino!? How long till that student loving cheater jumps like he did at UL or the Falcons? How good is the Arkansas team he recruited? Rutgers beat them too. Nassib and the receivers were not on the same page. Refs didn’t get one call right even when video reviewed. Was there a BE fix in? I don’t want to get into conspiracies. Play calls at the goal line were terrible and so were special teams. Kobena, not Rene is the return guy, but last I heard he is injured. Our kicker is good from 40 at best. Anyone from his area that can kick plays soccer (I went to the same high school). Carlton, nobody is saying Fla isn’t loaded with talent, but we can’t get it, so stop complaining we aren’t doing it. It isn’t up to us, it’s up to the player. We got beat by NJ players yesterday. Pasqualoni did it with NJ players. When they can win consistently and steal a few they shouldn’t win, the Fla recruits will pay attention but not until then. Hackett out thinks himself and not his opponents, by running inside runners outside and outside runners inside. What we need to get back to is letting the defense think they know what we’re doing, and do it anyway successfully.

Great sign of a QB is his decision making. He can have the best arm in the world with poor decision making ability and he is terrible. Chad Pennington is a great example of average skills with great decision making and won a lot of football games for Marshall & NY Jets. Nassib has great talent but WOW does he think his arm will save him and trying too hard.
I will never understand why Ashton hasnt been on the field. Even if you have to script the play for him on the sideline, he should be in the game. I believe above all things this could be the end of HCDM. This tells me that his ego is getting in the way of him doing the right thing for this team. He refuses to put his playmaker on the field. You think Jimmie Johnson would ever do this to Michael Irvin back in the day.

@Malone, I guess I’m kinda confused. Don’t know why u said i was complaining. I never said anything about recruiting FL in this post. Me an Russ talked about a NJ and FL HS football game but nothing to do /w SU and recruiting.

@Russ, few issues /w the last play yesterday /w stanford and everyone saying they got cheated.
1.Looks like the refs blew the play dead b/c Teo and others started celebrating. Teo plays to the whistle and goes 100% on every play. Tough telling me the refs didn’t indicate on the field the play was over.
2.Key thing to keep in mind is they called on the field that he was stopped.Right before he reaches the ball over its tough to see if the elbow came down. I went frame by frame /w my Dvr and I couldn’t tell from any of the angles NBC gave me. The refs where equally as bad all game. Stanford oline had more take downs then a 5rd UFC title fight and got called for holding 2x. It was a jk.

Anyways russ just b/c SU is bringing in someone new does not mean will loose anyone from the class of 13. They could keep everyone on board. RU did for the most part. Something to keep in mind.

Russell I made it official today at the university,I resigned my position as Coach Marrone’s assistant.

I want to address what we over time have become, and that is almost like family. We have discussed and dissected just about everything Syracuse Football. Our opinions differ and we’re not afraid to challenge one’s thoughts when we feel they are wrong. I’ve always respected the fact that we’ve tried hard to stay civil to each other and I know at times it’s been real hard. I’ve made friends here and enjoyed our dialogue with one another.

I’ve been following Syracuse Football since 1959. I’ve been a season ticket holder for the last 20 years and at the end of the year it will be coming to a close. Recent history is repeating itself. In 2004 we got rid of a real good coach and in the process lost out on some top recruits, does(Ray Rice)ring a bell with any of you? In 2012 we’re starting the process all over again, with the fans clamoring for the removal of Coach Marrone. Has anyone stopped to think if we get rid of him do we lose the recruits that have signed for 2013? Our we ready to go another decade in despair?

I want to thank the people who has made some great points to be discussed while making their posts. I want to say thanks to the Orange Fizz web page it’s been a great time.

Out of all the people that I’ve talked with and sometimes argued with is Russell MacEachern. I’ve come to learn a lot about you kiddo and I’ve truly enjoyed the time that we have conversed with each other. Not only do I call you friend, I’ve come to consider you a brother. It’s been a honor to have come in touch with an American Hero that has endured the angony of losing his family in a car accident. I only wish Russell that things work out for you in the end,you deserve the very best as far as I’m concerned.

We have 2 more home games left in the season and at that time I will end my involvement going to the dome and my involvement with the OrangeFizz. In closing I hope that all of the people who are crying for Coach Marrone’s removal really know what they’re doing. I hope that you enjoy the rest of the season.

In closing I want to wish all of people who I’ve come to consider friend’s a Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas.

Russell this is the last chapter of the novel that I’ve been writing. I hope that someday we both meet and have a great long talk about things.

    Thanks again people.

@Ron, Be sad to see ya go big guy. Should stick around. Seems we’ve lost a lot of ppl along the way. CDL,Norma, even big dip not around that much anymore. Seems we got a lot of 1 or 2 time posters theses days.

@Russ, The officials in the ND vs Stanford game where pac-12 not BE. Just saw that on the pac-12 blog. Rivers lost me one of my fantasy league games this week now 3-3 in that league. Dam bum! lol. I’m 4-2 and ranked 3rd overall in my big $$ league. So i’ll take it. A.johnson was my 1st rd pick in my 3-3 league. Kinda y i’ve been sucking.

@Carlton & Russell MacEachern;thanks for your comments and support, but honestly I feel that its time for me to go. i too have noticed that we have a lot of new names popping up here and can’t figure out what happened to CDL,Norma, bigdip and others that have posted here on a regular basis.

Syracuse will be making an historic change in 2013 when they enter the ACC. A period that should be interesting, intriguing, and fun. New teams will be coming to the dome and that should make the local fans happy. I mean after all that’s what they’ve been hollering for over the last 10/15 years. They wanted better teams because Syracuse wasn’t playing anyone who mattered. Well they got their wish and I hope they enjoy it. The same people who have been yelling to remove Coach Marrone should also understand that Syracuse is not going to dominate that league from the get go and I can hear the moaning and groaning from the people already.

I’ve made my decision Carlton, when the season ends so does my support.

Ron,way I see it were losing the only teams that matter…I always thought we should play 2/3 Fla schools,1 B1G and a wildcard outside of our traditional BE schedule and still do!Im not interested in playing all our games down south!Im afraid I’ll and many others will lose interest?Look at BC…irrevelant now even in Boston!!Look at the “U”..tey only had 300 fans at one home game and can’t draw fly’s now!!

@Russell MacEachern,I see Syracuse playing Maryland,Pittsburgh,Boston College, and Virginia every year. If you remember we use to play Maryland regularly. To me Boston College became a rivalry that replaced the Penn State game. I visualize in the near future a non-conference game played against Penn State become a regular happening again. We might even keep Rutgers on the schedule. One thing for sure is no one knows whats going to happen.

If Syracuse set’s up games against those schools on a regular basis and play the rest of their schedule as planned,It would make me a very happy man Russell and I would be more than happy to renew my season tickets.
