Die-hard¬†Syracuse fans left the Dome for the second straight week asking “what just happened?!”¬†It took¬†a miraculous comeback to beat Wake Forest and a fourth-quarter stop to survive pesky Rhode Island.¬†Orange Nation is left baffled by how SU didn‚Äôt run URI out of the building. Let‚Äôs unbaffle. Here’s the Fizz 5 things we’ve learned about the Orange:
- Syracuse can’t cover.
The Orange simply could not get off the field. The defense gave up 20 first downs, including four on penalty and nine through the air. Scott Schafer loves to dial up the blitzes out of the “Okie” package on 3rd down, but in order to do so he leaves his corners in man-to-man outside. They’ll typically have safety help over the top in a Cover 1 or Cover 2 look. But for a curl/dig/other route designed to get a first down, that’s on the corners. So far this year Kevin Scott, Keon Lyn and Rishard Anderson haven’t answered the call.
Rhode Island only went 5-14 on 3rd down, but the Rams held the ball for 32:00 compared to SU’s 27:00. If the Orange wants to avoid getting demolished by USC, its defense must get off the field. Also, SU needs to stay on the field offensively in order to give the D some rest.
- Marrone and co. have no faith in Brandon Reddish and Ritchy Desir at CB.
With Rishard Anderson out, Reddish should have been on the field a ton as the nickel corner. Instead, the coaches had Shamarko Thomas move down from safety and Jeremi Wilkes come in on the back end. The limited times we’ve seen Reddish, he’s been good. But the coaches haven’t allowed him to get many reps. As for the theory they’d be red-shirted? Both Reddish and Desir play on special teams. There goes that thought.
- The linebacking unit could be really exciting to watch.
As a collective media, we nailed SU’s linebacker situation. Everyone knew they’d be faster, but the lack of experience would show up in things like tackling and losing contain. That’s exactly what has happened.¬†Look at Dyshawn Davis. When the former wideout learns to tackle, he‚Äôs going to be an absolute monster. Davis is everywhere. He had a sack and two tackles for loss, on top of blowing up multiple plays with his ability to go sideline to sideline. Add in Marquis Spruill, whose two sacks sealed the game late, and Cam Lynch down the road, and this unit is going to be disgustingly good. In the meantime, patience with missed tackles and assignments might be necessary. But damn, they’re fun to watch. Any play could become a big play.
Antwon Bailey and Prince Tyson Gulley averaged roughly 3 yards per carry and could never break open the big play vs. URI. Marrone/Hackett also chose to throw the ball 37 times. Ryan Nassib was again impressive completing 29 of those 37 attempts for 318 yards and 3 TD’s, but SU is going to need more balance. Running the ball will help the aforementioned time of possession problem moving forward.
- SU needs to learn the concept of “contain.”
SU has had trouble rushing the passer and losing Chan Jones has made it even worse. If the Orange can’t contain the pocket, it’ll lose to¬†WVU and USF (mobile QB‚Äôs) by a billion points. Yes, SU racked up sacks Saturday, especially late. But there was no pressure through much of the day, putting the crosshairs on the secondary. When Syracuse did get after Probst, he was able to escape the pocket and run for over 50 yards (his official tally was 46, but that is minus sack yardage). Geno Smith or B.J. Daniels could have a field day if that happens again. Pass rushers need to stay in their lanes and linebackers have to be ready.
Ultimately, a win is a win. As Doug Marrone said post-game, Syracuse isn‚Äôt at a point yet where it can hang its head over a win. No one feels great being tied with Rhode Island in the 4th quarter. But if the Orange plays to the level of its opponent, let’s hope as the opponents get better (USC next), Syracuse gets better too.

hmmm, the old saying , dance with who u brought?firstly, i would like to assume that the talent marrone has recruiting is gonna turn out well. but unlike the defense, the offense for the past 3 years is all too predictable.and its troubling that a ex us player and offense lineman, has not been able to produce a good o line and refuses to play for the most part, any sort of opton attack whatsoever.statue dropback qbs are a dime a dozen. but as we have seen, exciting opton-sorry , mobile dual threat”qbs are m uch more difficult to find. we need a game changing qb, like wilson at u wisconsin, steele jantz, iowa state, denard robinson-michigan, or martinez at nebraska. who can win a game with their feet as well as throw on the sprint out opton. a ball control” offense, actually can explode at any time, if its a run spread or triple opton. and not only do we have to look forward to usc, but toledo mudhens? for the past several years are much better then folks would think.its about talent, really sometimes. and marrone, despite all this lofty speeches .. with the sterotype offense he wants to run.. little league version of the hallowed nfl”take whet they give us”. is gonna have to recruit big time talent. unfortunatley, this weekend, they are gonna run into a buzz-saw. whereas his offense talent is probably equal at best to parts of the usc second team. a su cliche nfl i formation with su talent is not gonna beat usc and their version of a nfl pro set offense.
Having two weeks of film should help a bunch. The last two game we had nada to work with.
Irish mist – John Kinder and Terrel Hunt are both young quarterbacks on the Syracuse roster with the potential to win the game with their legs. Most of the quarterbacks Marrone has recruited since he took the job are of the dual-threat variety. So look forward to a different type of offense in the near future.
yeah, cept for loeb.. it appears he is recruiting opton qbs. so i hope he puts in some spread run opton and triple opton looks eventually.. its a good sign he is trying to use tight ends and fullbacks for offence. i personally think we should have a opton package, with the big tail back from colorado.. and have bailey and the other scat backs doing multiple flankerback/wingback stuff. free bailey up even more for long runs and passes. and if the kid from rochester, gets his problems out of the way, he might be a real qb prospect also. its all about the next mcpherson, marvin graves, or donnie mcnabb.. we all saw how the michigan qb has destroyed ND in the past couple years.
Hey the only bright spot was the QB and the WR’s. I cant believe they gave an award to Thomas. His coverage is always frightening out there!!!
If you’re going to burn a redshirt year on kids, they should not be stuck playing special teams only. And I’ll add to the running game, the ‘thunder and lightning’ plan works when you have different running styles. Bailey and Gulley are the same, and I don’t know about Smith yet. So play AAM if he’s more talented. Play the best players. SU is not in a position it can carry over talent via redshirts.
Mobile QBs I get, but I don’t want to see an option attack again. They used that for way too long, it became predictable, and defenses set out to punish the QB. If you’re going to play on an indoor track, you may as well run the offenses of Boise St or Ok St, and just fling the ball all over the place. But they gotta get the talent first.

The RBs are getting a bad rap, though the team misses Delone for sure. The O-line has been shaky, at best. Defenses are stacking 8 in the box because they are not afraid of Nassib. He cannot throw downfield and that is killing the team. Against RI, he floated a pass for an Int and another missed a sure TD. When they play real teams, this offense will get worse. You can only run the bubble screen so many times. Nassib’s numbers are deceptive because most passes/yds come on the screen where the WR does all the work.
I agree with those above. The dual threat QB is the way to go in college football. Not necessarily a Spread offense, but having a guy who can tuck and run when the O-line breaks down would really slow that pass rush. Then the bubble screen becomes that much better when a LB has to shadow the QB. It is the Mike Leach philosophy. Use the entire field against the defense.
