The end of summer means college football preview guides and CBS Sports recently released its own, which included the ranking of all the Big East recruiting classes. It was a double insult to Orange Nation as Syracuse’s class ranked dead last and rival Rutgers rated first. However, Doug Marrone has reiterated before that recruiting services don‚Äôt always have much credibility and Syracuse doesn’t recruit according to the “star system.”
Judging by the results on the field, Marrone is doing just fine, thank you very much. Syracuse climbed into a bowl game in just his second year at the helm while the Scarlet Knights are picked to finish last in the conference. But CBS Sports isn’t the only outlet which has ranked RU’s recruiting class in the nation’s top 20 and Greg Schiano battles The Dougie consistently on the recruiting trail.
Looking ahead, while the ’12 class has several potential impact players, let’s hope it’s not remembered more for the big names who got away. From Chad Kelly to David Perkins to Jarron Jones, all the 5-star kids slipped out of the grasp of the Orange. Marrone told The Fizz at Big East Media Day it will take a very unique elite recruit to bring his talents to the Dome.
Hopefully that big name will be donning the Orange sooner rather than later. Syracuse can no doubt compete in the Big East with this level of talent, but taking the next step in recruiting is also a priority for the SU staff.
Regardless of some of the star players that chose elsewhere, this potential class should bring plenty of promise. Marrone clearly believes in his method of identifying kids early and offering them before the big boys jump into the fray. SU has also sought kids who may fly under the radar from services but can be molded into impact players.
It’s never easy to see Rutgers at the top of any list and Syracuse at the bottom – especially in a recruiting class. But don‚Äôt be alarmed, Marrone knows just a little bit more than the recruiting services. At least we can hope.

I really don’t put much stock into anything CBS has to say about anyone or anything. Their word means absolutely nothing to me and I believe their clueless on everything.
Sorry, but thats what I feel.
Hey Fizz,
If you can, please put in a link to the CBS Rankings page? Thanks
Yeah but I still think we are at the bottom half of the BE in recruiting. If this keeps up( low rankings if you believe or disbelief in the Stars system)then this team will be that team that wins 6/7 games a year. Not good enough. There is no chance of improvement without top talented players. NO WAY!!
Terry, I honestly believe that if Syracuse had an undefeated season and played for and WON the National Championship, your message would always be the same. Give it up bro, give it up. You gotta grow up and let it go.
Syracuse has approximately 10-11 players who got drafted and are going the free agent route from last years squad trying out for spots on NFL teams this year. Your point is that none of these players were or are worth a damn. Doesn’t that put you on an equal footing with the players? Please let us all know what you’ve done lately that qualifies you to try out for any of the NFL teams.

Hello can I reference some of the information here in this site if I link back to you?
i do have faith in marrones ability to judge talent. i recently looked at year 2007’s top 25 hs dual threat”opton qbs. and m ost of them seem to have sunk without a trace. however, many of them are very good athletes, so its a temptation for coaches to get them on the field as defense players or say recievers.which in the majority of offense players recruited, its not gonnna happen. however, to really win big, marrone is gonna have to lock up the top ny players. we all know about 2 great players that went to michigan from the syracuse area. as well as rice to rutgers.
@Irishmist,Ray Rice didnt go to the “Cuse” as he said he wanted too stay “home” and play in front of his family+friends as most of the guys from NyC/LI+downstate players do!They feel more in common with the “Jersey guys”than the kids from the wilds of the frozen north even so Leonard,Guase and Wayne Thomas to mention a few feel similarly the glow of the “Block R”+dont even consider the “Cuse”as even their coach takes on that chilly frost!HCDM may be a decent guy but gives the impression of a 60s style no-nonsense,no love kinda guy.
