Rivals.com ranks Syracuse’s current crop of 2015 recruits as the ninth best class out of the 14 teams in the ACC. Just a month ago, it looked like the Orange was falling behind in the recruiting game because SU coaches had yet to secure a single verbal commitment. Now, after landing three verbals last week, the Orange now has seven verbal commitments in total.
Seven is a strong number for mid May, but a lot of these players were not too highly recruited by other programs. So that begs the question: how do these seven players stack up against the other recruiting classes in the ACC?
Rivals uses a formula based on both the number of recruits a team has and the quality of those players. That is why a team like Virginia Tech is ranked sixth on the Rivals chart despite having just four verbal commitments. The Hokies’ four recruits are deemed to be better players than SU’s seven. The average star rating of the four Virginia Tech commits is three compared to an average 2.2 rating for SU’s commits. A 2.2 average rating is the lowest in the ACC. It’s the lowest of any team that plays in one of the major football conferences.
That rating is scary, but it’s just another number. It is so difficult for writers to evaluate talent all across the country. The fact that a lot of Syracuse’s recruits were not listed on major recruiting websites at the time of their commitments means little. Scott Shafer and his staff’s judgment must be trusted. Most of SU’s recruits did not have extensive Division I offers, but if these players were not ACC-caliber they would not have received offers from Syracuse. On paper the Orange will have another middle tier recruiting class, but that does not mean these players have no potential.
Obviously Syracuse cannot lure the top-level talent but it is definitely encouraging that Shafer and company have already found seven players that fit the Syracuse mold. Regardless of their current rankings these are the players that will work to transition SU into an ACC powerhouse.

I worry about how under the radar we are, but we have a few gems and we are in on a bunch more. I feel we are in pretty good shape for this time of year, and I hope this upcoming season not only locks in what we have, but wins/flips a few.
i like the lineman, the rb’s are a little under the radar but the db’s we have seem to be sleepers. i like how were starting to pick up more verbals this time of year. thats a sign of a up and coming program.
Yes the current rankings concern me, since the writers seem think they are gems?? I’m a believer in the ranking system on the most part. Yet if the 2 OL players from Florida are that good why so low??Their tape looks great, but not ranked that good yet!! Its early I know!! But there are 100’s of 3 stars OL players out here, before these two verbaled to SU!! And also lets wait to LOI day before SU has these two in the SU’s stable “if” they are that good!! I feel the Ill. player might be the best of the 3!!

At this point, we have to trust Shafer, McDonald and the others on the coaching staff. It will be very interesting to see what kind of senior seasons these non rated, under the radar, can’t be that good, players have. Did we jump the gun in offering? Time will tell- right now my $$$ is on the Orange coaching staff.
I feel that they are trying to find the guys that arent out yet but they will be when it is all said and done. Look at the Davis kid, he is blowing up all over the place. We are alot of these guys first offers followed by other school on our level or better. Sure seems that we are on a lot of kids that Wisconsin’s after also. I would love to have 4 and 5 star guys all over the place but that is a ways off. I wont say never cause if basketball can do it we can too in the long haul.
We will not be in on 4 and 5 star kids….until we really start winning on the field!!! And…..I would think more 4 star kids would be a realistic goal….5 Stars can go anywhere….SU will be a tough sell !!
Doc is 100% on that comment. We need realistic expectations for the kind of program the SU football team has. There is no real strong draw for the highly sought out recruits. No big name head coach, no consistently high profile tv games, not as ideal geographic location(for many), palace like stadium and facilities, doesn’t have the same pipeline to the NFL as many of the top tier programs.
At this point, this is where Shafer and his staff truly earns the money. Yes coaching is their primary function, but they are in the unique position of being sorta like general managers in evaluating and acquiring talent.
OL depth is never bad, its an actual need of the team, like defensive back. Remember, these guys are empty canvas that eventually will be ACC ready..

SU has never needed headliners to get “the headlines” .. pretty sure these kids know about the recent success ( jones/pugh FL 1st rders) & the past ( like the ERNIE DAVIS’ & JIM BROWNS of the world)
Big Dip, Like you said, those guys you listed weren’t on the cover of recruiting magazines and part of this big national all star games. They were solid, often overlooked recruits who came here and worked their butts off to get better. They worked hard enough and produced enough to get evaluated by pro scouts. So the star gazing is great for the programs who are consistently in on the top tier guys. For us we gotta find guys that can be coached up and win.
