Monday Recruiting Roundup: Henderson Jr. Wins a State Title

A quick trip around the nation to check in on some key Orange ’15 commits.

Linebacker Troy Henderson Jr. tweeted, “It’s one thing to dream and it’s another to make it happen,” after his St. Edward team (OH) knocked off Wayne (OH) 31-21 to win the Division I state championship on Saturday.

Henderson Jr.’s defense gave up 14 points in the first quarter, but did not allow Wayne to score again until the fourth. Wayne only gained 64 yards of offense in the second and third quarters of the game. Coming into Saturday’s championship, Wayne had averaged over 30 points per game in its four playoff wins.

In Florida, kicker Sterling Hofrichter will have the chance to play for a state championship this weekend after his Armwood team knocked off Choctawhatchee 19-15 in a state semifinal. Early in the game, Armwood gave up a safety after having a punt blocked in the end zone and trailed for the first time all season 2-0. Hofrichter responded on the next drive with a 45-yard field goal however, to give Armwood a 3-2 lead. SU’s future kicker also added two extra points in the win.

So who will undefeated Armwood play in the state title game? 2015 SU defensive end commit Keivonnis Davis’ 13-1 Miami Central team. Davis had two sacks in his team’s 31-21 semifinal win over Mainland on Friday. This is the fifth season in a row that Miami Central will play for a state championship.

Finally, New Jersey running back Dontae Strickland’s high school career is over after South Brunswick lost in the state championship game to Manalapan 21-7. Strickland ran for his team’s lone touchdown in the game. He also forced a fumble on defense with a thunderous blind side hit to Manalapan’s quarterback that can be seen here. If that wasn’t enough Strickland had an interception as well as a 52-yard kick return in the game; what a day.

Gotta keep em! We’ll soon see wether we are moving forward. It starts with improving the quality of talent. If the class of 15′ shows up as advertised it will be our best infusion of talent in years! Play em….do it again next year! Play em….this is going to take a few years..no National Championship..just good solid competitive ACC Football!
Shafer should be enough to get us there? Gross is a jackass that helped get us here..get rid of him and get Shafer a good partner!

Here we go again, history repeating itself. I read an article posted on the syr.com website yesterday about fans being upset with the football program and finishing 3-9 for the 2014 season. Then I read all of the responses from the so-called fans. There were some, who like you and me,want to see Dr. Daryl Gross gone. I’m with them 100%, let’s get rid of him. Send him packing back to the West coast or to Rutgers with Nancy Cantor.
There was also a lot of responses calling for the university to get rid of Scott Schafer as the head coach of the Syracuse University Football program. I feel that if they did get rid of Schafer it would be a huge mistake and the people who are complaining now are the probably the same people who bitched and complained about Pasqualoni before Cantor/Gross let him go putting in the position that were in now. In other words they didn’t learn a damn thing before and are showing us just how frigging stupid they are now. I’ve always argued that it takes a coach 5 years to change any program around.

Michigan let Rich Rodriquez go after 3 years and hired Brady Hoke who was let go this year after failing to turn that program around. Scott Shafer has been here for 2 years let’s give the man a chance, because I believe that he will indeed turn the program around.

Gross is a jackass that helped get us here..get rid of him and get Shafer a good partner! I agree with you 100% but I feel history is repeating itself here. Yesterday I read an article posted on syr.com saying how the fans were disappointed with the football program. I agreed with the article right up to when I started reading the responses from the so-called fans.
Some agreed with the two of us that felt that Dr. Daryl Gross should be let go and a new athletic director should be hired. But there were a lot of fans calling for the university to get rid of Scott Shafer. The people who are complaining are probably the same ones that bitched and hollered that got Coach Pasqualoni fired and has put the program in the position it’s in now. I‘ve always argued that it takes a new coach of a program 5 years to change a program around.

People need to take a look at the college landscape and see what’s happening. Michigan let Rich Rodriquez go after 3 years, hired Brady Hoke and let him go this year after he too failed to lead the Wolverines to the promised land. Scott Shafer was thrown into the fire after Doug Marrone left taking his entire staff with him to Buffalo. He’s had 2 recruiting classes with the 3rd coming in(loaded with decent talent) for 2015,he’s had to throw a coaching staff together and had to fight to keep the recruits from de-committing. So I say,LET’S BE PATIENT and give Shafer some leeway here and give him his due(5years) to change things around. If we do I think were going to be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

I just took this paragraph from an article posted on ESPN.

RB Melvon Gordon leads the nation with 2,336 yards rushing and 179.7 yards per game. Gordon broke the single-game Football Bowl Subdivision rushing record with 408 yards against Nebraska, a record that stood for only a week. He needs another huge game in the Outback Bowl against Auburn to break Barry Sanders’ single-season record of 2,628, set in his Heisman-winning season of 1988 with Oklahoma State.

To think that this kid and three of his schoolmates were on campus in 2009 and Marrone and his staff couldn’t take the time to talk with these kids amazes me. Talk about adding insult to injury. What the hell is going on? Oh!! I forgot to mention that he’s one of the three finalist for the 2014 Heisman Trophy. It looks like Dr. Gross saw something in this kid that he didn’t like, turned his head and told Marrone to forget him. Only at Syracuse gentlemen, only at Syracuse.

Gross needs to go… Enough said!
Shafer is a different story… Our reputation and ability to recruit/ pay a “big” name coach is limited. Shafer is a good compromise. Dumping him after 2 years will only make the search more difficult. Gross and our Football Program are viewed nationally as a joke. Shafer wasn’t the way I would have gone, but we’re there. It was an easy, cheap, path for Gross and eliminated the embarrassment of not being able to attract a top notch guy and staff.
Shafer has done a credible job. Removing McDonald half way through the season showed me he is willing to take risks and change when necessary. We see coach after coach stuck in their system or staff. He has moved the recruiting bar. We were in the 70’s year after year. We’ll see where we land but it should be an improvement. He’s playing freshmen…he is trying to build a Program.
There was no quick fix..especially with Gross and the University providing “soft” if any support. ACC buck$ are way up from Big East days. Give him the tools.
We are were we are. The morons yelling about Shafer based on wins and losses at this point are what they are! We have nothing to gain by dumping Shafer!
    Dumping Gross.. Different story..all upside!

I don’t think the “fire Gross” mantra is going to gain any traction. The guy has dramatically improved our non-revenue sports to the point where we are a national contender for most nonrevenue sport championships annually. I don’t know this to be true, but it is my belief that he is paid a huge bonus for our final annual standings in nonrevenue sports. Otherwise, he would not be devoting the money that gets devoted (we pay nonrevenue sport head and assistant coaches a lot more than most colleges) to nonrevenue sports that previously weren’t paid any attention to by the SU Athletic Department and foundered before Gross’ arrival. I, therefore, think this is an SU Board of Trustees issue, not a Dr. Gross issue. Correct it now by telling him as soon as his current contract is over, we aren’t going to renew based on those same terms. We now want you to succeed in revenue sports to increase our revenues further and to have more impact on gaining interest of more potential applicants to SU who are not athletes. That is one of the biggest advantages of successful revenue sport teams — increase in interest in attending the school in general — that nonrevenue sports don’t add. We bring in as much money as any other ACC school now given revenue sharing from the ACC conference. The difference between us and FSU/Clemson is that FSU/Clemson have boosters that will pay for things to help the football program and we don’t. That is unattainable. The difference between us and every other program in the ACC is that the other programs give their football program more money to pay coaches. We are at or near the bottom in pay for our Head Coach and our Assistants. If we want to fix the problems with the football team, it isn’t that difficult to figure out. Our defense was stellar. Our offense was horrible and inept at best. Our Special Teams was ignored. If we spent an extra $500,000 on an OC, we can get a good one. If we spend an extra $150,000 to hang a title on a coach as Special Teams Coordinator in addition to whatever we pay that coach for the position he coaches, we can get a good one. How would you feel if you were told $650,000 is the difference between this football team going 3-9 or this team going 8-4 and going to a decent bowl game where we at least break even and gain credibility with recruits and fans who then will invest in this program? I have no problem saying that is money well spent, although it admittedly isn’t my money.

Dinosaurbbq; I don’t think the “fire Gross” mantra is going to gain any traction.
I think Dr. Gross getting fired is closer than you might think and here’s why. His priorities are all screwed up. You made mention of him building up the nonrevenue sports and all becoming nationally recognized . That’s wonderful but the way I see it is he’s ignored the GOOSE THAT KEEPS LAYING ALL OF THOSE GOLDEN EGGS. Wouldn’t you think if the main money maker in your program was the football and basketball programs, that you would make them as good as you could and then advance the nonrevenue sports programs second?
For me I think he’s gone by the end of 2015. Just my opinion. Just my opinion.

Hi guys, yes Ron is right about HCSS needing a fair chance here or we go straight back to the rear of the line and start over. I’ve been away for awhile due to personal issues and because after being offline for 30 days the Fizz format changed from warm and friendly to a (no offense staff) cheesier generic vanilla looking what we see now!! I hope we return to one I was so fond of !?! I was kept informed by Ron through email or phone of recent events. Listen to him he knows of what he speaks.
