Ever since Terrel Hunt threw the punch that ejected him from Friday’s win over Villanova, there has been chatter of him possibly getting benched for Austin Wilson (including here on the Fizz). Sorry to those clamoring for Wilson, but that is simply not the answer right now.
Should Hunt have known better and controlled himself? Absolutely. Was Hunt lighting it up against Villanova before he was ejected? Not exactly. But make no mistake, Hunt is the starting quarterback and should be when the Orange take the field next weekend against Central Michigan.
Hunt was chosen to be the starter largely because of his experience last year. He showed growth, most notably culminating in the Texas Bowl where Hunt won the MVP. But this year, Hunt was supposed to show continued growth. Just because he didn’t play well against Villanova doesn’t mean he won’t still show he is a better player. Also, one instance of “poor judgment,” doesn’t make him a bad person or necessarily a bad leader.
Obviously Coach Shafer, SU, and the ACC are not worried about Hunt’s actions, as was evidenced by a lack of additional discipline. Was it a big deal that Hunt was ejected? Sure. Should it be something that carries over to next week? No, it is over and done with.
On to Wilson, he is simply not ready to lead this team. Even after the disappointing win against Villanova, if the Orange has its sights set on winning seven or eight games, (as some have predicted), Wilson is not the quarterback to take SU there this year.
First, one may point to Wilson’s great play when he entered the game. Realistically, he played well the first two drives and then sputtered after the touchdown. Second, he isn’t nearly the running threat that Hunt is. This offense was constructed with the idea that Hunt would be the starter, so there is a little more movement out of the quarterback and planned runs. Remember how out of place Drew Allen looked in the pistol the first few weeks last year? Or how Hunt didn’t look quite right fitting into the offense built around Allen right after he took over? It would take an adjustment.
Lastly, Wilson still has work to do passing. Sitting in the endzone Friday night, the offense, led by Wilson came right at me in the third quarter. It gave me a good angle to see where passes were related to the receiver. There were some that were really off target. Passes went to the wrong shoulder, or on the outside which should have been down the hash marks. These are things to work on, and maybe some of them come with timing with the receivers, but the throws need to be better. At least one of them could have been a touchdown down the middle.
This is not to say Wilson cannot be the starter here next year or thereafter, but this year it doesn’t look like it is in the cards. Hunt needs to get back out on the field, and lead the Syracuse offense. The most important drive will be the first one next week at Central Michigan. If Hunt and the Orange charge down field for a touchdown, most of the talk of Wilson playing will go away.

I am not a Hunt fan. Last years MVP Bowl performance was heavily influenced by a great o-line performance…takes a team to win. The team didn’t show up last Friday and Hun isn’t good enough to carry them. The o-line was an embarrassment. Can’t completely blame Hunt.
I’m ok with staying with Hunt for now.. Someone ..think it was Ron ..said he’d be gone by the 4th or 5th game. I think he’s right. I would start giving Wilson first team reps. Hunt is not the answer. If he is..we have a dark future!

I agree with everything Cuse17 said in his post and I too think your wrong about Austin Wilson not being ready yet. Typical sterotyping by the media isn’t the answer here. Austin Wilson is a QB who stays in the pocket ands scrambles when it’s necessary. That’s the knock everyone has against him.
So when Seth does Austin get his reps? Ryan Nassib had to wait three years before he got a chance to shine. Set the bench behind a wanna be QB (Greg Paulis). How did that work out? I guess we filled the dome with the total population of Syracuse coming to support the local kid, right?
Terrel Hunt was thrown into the mix when another great transfer QB came in from Oklahoma. That didn’t work either did it?
If Austin Wilson doesn’t gewt some playing time this year and stay as the backup to Hunt,I can see him transferring out at the end of the season.
In the current “system”(assuming there really is one), Hunt IS the man as he is somewhat of a running threat and big enough to take the hits. The O needs the qb to be a productive runner.
Looking at the playcalling and the overall offensive(and it was offensive) effort against NOVA, can you imagine how McDonald would fare instituting a different O to accommodate Wilson’s abilities/weaknesses?

Hey guys, I’ll try to address some of the comments.
First, Cuse17, I think it will be hard to replace Hunt four games in when it wasn’t exactly an open competition this offseason. Last year, there wasn’t as much wiggle room with Allen because they were supposedly close in the offseason. This year, there was clearly a gap between Hunt and everyone else, so Hunt would need to play really poorly over the next three games for them to consider a change, I would think.
Next, Ron, not sure it is a fair comparison to Nassib/Paulus… That would have been much more like last year’s situation with Hunt/Allen where one came in as a transfer. In this case, Hunt was the incumbent starter, and I don’t know how much of a gap there was between Hunt and the backups this offseason. Could Wilson transfer? Of course he could, but it could also be because the Orange seem to have a bunch of quarterbacks behind him as well. Meaning that he could see the signs that even if he sticks it out, he may get beaten out by an AJ Long or Mitch Kimble or Alin Edouard, if he shows up, when Hunt graduates. If he truly is being groomed to be the starter next year or the year after, I am not saying he shouldn’t get snaps in practice. But if this team is going to win 7 or 8 games as many fans, myself included, and the team want to see, Hunt is probably the guy this year to be he QB. From what I saw Friday night, Wilson just isn’t ready to step in next weekend at Central Michigan and be the starter that can lead the team to 8 wins.
And orangeinva, I have to agree with you about McDonald instituting a new offensive system/gameplay. We saw how it worked last year when there was a bit of an adjustment period after the QB switch. That coming after not being blown away by the play calling Friday night, so it would certainly be interesting.

I still don’t agree! Hunt is not very good. It’s that simple. He’s got size, that let’s him run but he isn’t even that good a runner. He played poorly last year and the coaches and the media promised great improvement. One game isn’t a season but he was the same mediocre robot. Didn’t take command. Didn’t demonstrate he was ready to be the QB. How many years will it take for a poor offensive staff to teach a mediocre athlete to play big time college QB.

He absolutely didm’t take command against Nova, but it was also just over a quarter. He showed last year in the BC game and the Texas Bowl (I know its just two games) that he has the ability to take command and control the team. The offensive staff isn’t great, maybe that plays into it, but the staff will be the same regardless of the quarterback. Maybe Wilson is better in the long term, but I really think based on what I saw Friday that Wilson would struggle just as much as Hunt if he is the starter.
Also, I did think the Orange could win 8 in the season predictions, but Shafer also fanned the flames and said his goal was 8 for the season, so I am definitely not the only one. Obviously after seeing the team against another school, expectations may need to change.
I honest could careless who the starting QB is. I’m sure all of us would just like to see whomever the guy maybe to take control of this offense and move it down the field for points. More touchdowns than field goals please. Bring Cuse football back to days when Coach Mac was running the show.
