Since Scott Shafer took over as head Syracuse football coach in January 2013, he and his staff have made serious gains in recruiting. The 2014 class (which arrived on campus for minicamp yesterday) and the work-in-progress 2015 class both have players fans should be excited about. Like every program however, SU has had its fair share of recruiting ups and downs over the last year and a half. Shafer and company have learned from these experiences and as a result have gotten off to a solid start recruiting 2016 athletes.
Two 2016 4-star recruits have already visited campus this summer. They are 6‚Äô0″, 205-pound Connecticut linebacker¬†Koby Quansah¬†(who attended an SU camp) and 6‚Äô5‚Äô‚Äô 255 pound New Jersey offensive lineman Liam Smith. This is fantastic news for a school that has not landed many 4-star players recently. The last 4-star recruit to visit SU‚Äôs campus was 2014 wide receiver¬†KJ Williams,¬†who did not qualify academically and has reopened his commitment.
When defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough went to the Kingsford Oxford School in Connecticut and invited Quansah to camp, the linebacker had no rating by any of the major recruiting sites. Now he is ranked nationally on Rivals and has a very solid relationship with SU’s coaches.
Syracuse was in a similar situation with 4-star Florida cornerback Davante Davis earlier this summer. Davis hastily committed to Syracuse before visiting the school. Other schools and recruiting sites eventually caught wind of his ability and Davis ultimately opened up his commitment after receiving multiple SEC and Big 10 offers. He is now a long shot to re-commit. SU has forged a solid relationship with Quansah early and will hopefully still be a contender when the big boys offer because of his successful camp visit.
Smith’s visit is important to SU for the same reason: building relationships. A player may be interested in Syracuse, but if he is being heavily recruited elsewhere, he needs to visit to meet the coaches and to see if the program is really a fit.
A 4-star commit who will actually get on the field is not far away for Syracuse.

What are you basing this from? According to 247Sports.com composite rankings, we have had multiple 4* commits over the past decade:
– Ron Thompson
– Wayne Morgan
– Averin Collier
– Marcus Sales
– Lavar Lobdell
Spruill was a 4* per rivals, as were Mikhail Marinovich and Romale Tucker.
Scout also gave Sales, Collier, and Tucker 4* along with Jermaine Pierce (who never played a down due to medical issues), Doug Hogue, and Delone Carter.
Yeah and KJ was a 4 star right?
I remember Lobdell being 4 star because I always cite him as one of the guys I feel never lived up to the hype.
Depending on where you look, Morgan was a pretty well regarded 3 star(I didn’t look at 247) and I think Ron Thompson was a 3/4 star depending on where you look.
But all in all, yes that line about 4 stars does seem a little off even though we don’t attract them regularly.

I believe that above article is focused on the 6’5″ 265 LB OL out of Connecticut and if he is then Syracuse hasn’t recruited a 4* OL or DL since Tim Green out of Liverpool.

I use scout.com for player ratings and they had Collier, Sales and Lobdell as 4s. I’ll see if I can get that changed in the piece, my mistake.
The point I’m trying to make is that 4-star players usually don’t choose SU, so it’s exciting that Shafer and co. have been able to get these players interested this early.
Adding quality player for 2015 would be great. I hope that 2016 is more about quality as opposed to quantity.Getting a Kareem Walker or a Rob Washington as RBs is a start. High level OL players will always be critical. LOS breaching LBers never is to be disregarded as simply derivative.
Its “never “too early” to consider the next recruiting season. It begins with position of need and then regional standouts regardless of need.
Don’t forget Patrice Rene, a DB from Canada. We are one of his leaders, and he’s been to SU for camps. He is also regarded a 4 star.

I love the recruiting job by HCSS and staff, but SU’s continued success on the field with 2* & 3* players makes it a lot easier to go after players designated as 4*.
