Believe it or not, training camp is right around the corner for SU Football.
Syracuse’s leaders for the upcoming 2014 season were at the ACC Football Kickoff on Sunday in Greensboro, NC. Senior standouts OT Sean Hickey and LB Cameron Lynch represented the Orange.
The kickoff event means pre-training camp depth charts have been released on behalf of the program. As the Orange prepares to make strides in its 2nd year as a member of the ACC Conference, here’s how Scott Shafer has things lined up for now, offensively and defensively.

Some immediate takeaways and surprises:
Adonis Ameen-Moore listed as #2 running back
Ameen-Moore had just five attempts on the ground last season for Syracuse. George McDonald utilized George Morris II and Devante McFarlane a whole lot more last season. Perhaps The Mailman is trusting seniority over upside. Recall Adonis missed the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl due to ineligibility. It stands out he’s getting more opportunities early on because clearly the staff thinks he can bring more to the table than just being used in key situations such as the tank package.
 A trio of freshman can make an early impact
Juwan Dowels, Antwon Cordy and Cordell Hudson are each inside the top three for both cornerback slots. All three players provide outstanding speed. Cordy runs a 4.5 40-yard dash, and Dowels and Hudson add to SU’s traditional upbringing of Florida defensive backs. Look for these three guys early on to impress and see playing time.
Omar Palmer jumps ahead of veteran Rob Trudo
The 6’2”, 316 lb. diesel Palmer weighs 24 pounds more than redshirt junior Trudo. Rob started all thirteen games last season for Syracuse at left guard. Sort of a surprise, but Palmer has tremendous upside. Palmer, a redshirt sophomore, played in nine games last year and was also a wrestler at Longwood High School (NY). Point being is that he has mental and physical toughness.
Mitch Kimble still backs up Terrel Hunt
This storyline stood out back in March, and it stays the same. Kimble takes on the backup signal-caller duties to Hunt. AJ Long is third, while Austin Wilson sits at four. Let’s not overblow this because Hunt is THE guy next season. A full year under his belt of learning how to start and acclimate his skills to the college game means a big year hopefully for him. However, you have to examine backups because as everybody knows in football, one play can change everything. By that we mean injuries.

My early predicted for Syracuse was to go 9-3 this season, I guess I’m going to change it now that you’ve put that lineup in print. I think now that they have a chance of going 4-8.
Just letting you know that you’ve ruined my day and maybe the whole damn season. AJ Long ahead of Austin Wilson!!!! How in sam’s hell is that even possible?
At this point and time I don’t see anything to get to upset about. Once practice gets going, pads are put on things could change. Pre season injuries happen as well, I hope no one gets hurt but this is football and those kind of things happen as we saw last year when the team went up to Fort Drum.

Relax there has to be some sort of order to start the season. If Wilson has the ability then you will see him rise up the depth chart. All is I ask and I am real confident that it actually happens is the best players play. Go Cuse!

As for the depth chart wow. Mr. Palmer is a big boy(2star from NY if I remember correctly). Been kinda waiting to see when he’d make his way up the chart since he was recruited. I remember reading that Doug Marrone likes those wrestlers(I believe Knapp was also a former HS wrestler from that recruiting class). At any rate, to unseat a guy who started all through last year could say alot for Palmer..or Trudo.
The young corners should have plenty of chances to get some pt, but I really hope that Reddish solidifies himself as a legit NFL prospect and cashes in on the flashes he has shown us. Julian Whigham and Wayne Morgan are also going to have to put forth strong campaigns as upper class guys.
The rb depth is a surprise, but good for AAM. He was another guy who came in with promise and never really cashed in aside from some situational success. I wanna see the big man provide some thunder. I still think GM and D Mac get some touches but AAM will be like a freight train as he seems more motivated to break through this year. I think he will break atleast one really big run where he flattens a db trying to make a tackle on him.
To continue with the theme of cashing in on potential, look at the wr depth chart. If all those upper class guys are truly head and shoulders above the young guns, I say let the young big targets redshirt, absorb the playbook and unleash them on the ACC next season. Flemming looked like he was going to become a big part of the passing game in that limited action he got. He was targeted a decent amount before that unfortunate injury. If he stays healthy, you got some pretty tall go up and get it type of guys to throw at the defense.
The depth chart basically makes me feel like Austin Wilson is gonna look for the exit sign before long. My initial prediction was that he’d end up at an FCS school and go on to play well. Kimble, Long and Hunt are all regarded as that dual threat mobile qb. While Wilson ain’t a statue for some reason, I don’t think the coaches think he is a fit for what they want to do. At any rate I liked Kimble in the spring game though thats not a great sample. If we are lucky he only comes into mop up some SU victories and Hunt emerges as the guy.
I think that Ron needs to drink more decaf. Apre-season and especially pre camp depth chart is far from conclusive regardless of the position status. They have Alin Edouard on the fifth team which is going to be comical in retrospect Maybe as early as the beginning of play for things to change radically for a good number of these kids.
It’s early– early and a pre season depth chart means just about nothing. Might use it to get some young mems attention. I wouldn’t loose to much sleep over it and doubt if Ron is either.
I don’t believe we do better than 6-6 with Hunt..could be Ron’s 4-8. Sure hope one of the kids can step up?
i would love to see ameen moore play a whole lot more this year.we’ll have to wait and see but the thing i like is the depth we now have on the roster, this schedule is pretty rough and you need a big roster and healthy players to go through a schedule like ours.
both Kimble and Wilson are sophomores this year and are classified as red-shirt freshmen. I never said to start a freshman over anyone,having AJ Long who is the true freshman ahead of Wilson just blows my mind away.
If you remember during the spring game under center ready to run any play,he couldn’t see over the linemens butt while they were in the three point stance just before snapping the ball. We have 2 QB’s that stand 6’3″-6’5″ tall and averaging 220 lbsand then you go ahead and put in a guy who stands 5’7″ 180 lbs art the most. I just don’t get it.
And then to top it all off I HAVE TO READ CRAP FROM jamesvillecuse.
I guess for all of those people who still believe that true freshmen can’t play or shouldn’t be playing in a college game was the thought process back in the 1940’s and 50’s.
Let’s jump forward to today’s game ok. In 2012/2013 season the Heisman Trophy went to a redshirt freshman by the name of Johnny Manziel,left college as a true junior(not a reshirt sophmore)for the NFL and will probably sign a 20-30 million dollar contract with the Clevand Browns this year. Not to bad for a kid,is it?
In 2013/2014 we had another redshirt freshman(really a sophomore)from FSU Jamis Winston that guided his team to an undefeated season and went onto winning the National Championship Game. For anyone who still believes that redshirt freshmen/sophomores can’t play ought to write a letter to all who are playing the game at an early age and tell why you think that they shouldn’t be playing. I think you might get answers that would shock you
Terrel Hunt if you didn’t already know is really a senior this year but has one more year of eligiblity left because he to was redshirt.
Dual threat QB’s are great for the college game but don’t last long in the NFL. Ask Donovan McNabb,Mike Vick and RGIII how they’re doing in the NFL today. Then go ask Payton Manning who’s been in the NFL as a pocket passer for what 15-18 years. The coaching staff has problems with Auston Wilson because he’s a true pocket passing QB that doesn’t fit the scheme of thing to come at Syracuse University. It’s going to be a sad day if austin Wilson transfer out of Syracuse at the end of the year. I want you to remember 3/4 years down the road when they graduate college,who makes the draft and if they all do get drafted who has the longest sucessful career. My money is going to be on Austin Wilson making the cut above everyone else that’s mentioned in this article.
yeah i like wilson myself as a qb. here at syracuse you have to learn to scramble if you have to. i leave it in the coaches hands as far as depth charts are concerened, but you still have august camp right around the corner.
Dual threat guys are getting a bad rap I believe. As the game continues to evolve, I believe they will have larger success in the NFL. But ofcourse the traditional drop back qb will still have its role. Its becoming more and more about the kind of team(and defense) you craft around your qb.
I really like Wilson and think that the man will have success elsewhere if he decides to transfer. But I do believe the staff isn’t high on him because he doesn’t seem like a fit for their plans. Now AJ Long seems smallish to me, but then as I said in another post, maybe he is able to have success down the line. Alin is the wildcard as an athlete, because in 2 yrs maybe he is the guy as he continues to grow as a player. I predicted a position change for him initially.
As always I agree with @ron on this one I heard aj long is a punk … Maybe as much of a punk as Jamesvillecuse… Ron has been posting on this site since day one he has forgotten more about syracuse football than Janesvillecuse knows
None of it matters at this point. Come August 27 or 28 when coaches release game starters for Villanova game should we get excited. Alot is going to happen between now and then. And I just saw an article on syracuse.com from Coach Shafer and I quote “one of the most overrated things in football” and even after the Nova game their is good than better chance the depth chart will change again. As for freshman coming in and being superstar right away is crazy, Johnny and Winston are the exception to your comment, they talked about it over and over on espn. Can you name the last freshman to win both before the last two??

I don’t think a true freshman has ever won the Heisman Trophy. NEVER!!!!! Using both Manziel and Winston as examples was a poor excuse by me,because both were true sophomores with a REDSHIRT label after their names.
This year Jamis Winston will play the game as a true junior with a redshirt sophomore label attached to his name. After the season is over I see him entering the 2015 NFL draft.

Ron, I think there are a lot of head games the coaches are playing with the players in this depth chart. AAM is a good example. They are rewarding him for his hard work, and letting the heirs apparent DMc and GM II that they need to keep working. Trudo may be more of the same.
As for the QB spot, I think a lot of it is what you read above. Mobility is the name of the game now. Wilson was a Marrone guy. I don’t think George McDonald would have recruited him. You brought up Manziel as a good example of what an underclassman can do, and I will use him as a good example of what a mobile and undersized QB can do. I think this may be what the staff sees in AJ Long. Your example of Peyton Manning was a good one, but I think he has as many Super Bowl wins as Russel Wilson, a mobile undersized QB, or Drew Breeze, also mobile and undersized. My opinion is there is still a lot of time to see if things take a different shape before kickoff.
Also heard from Cordell Hudson that he ran a laser 4.5 40 yesterday. Speed at the corners!
Malone, I’m in line with that thinking. Especially the qb stuff. I still like talking about post spring game and pre season depth charts because frankly, this is a dead period where the only chatter is generated by recruiting talk. Its nice to think ahead because a month from now we will be gearing up for the real deal.
I think the AAM may be part motivation but partly a legit reflection of what they see from him. A motivated big back like Moore can be a problem for defenses. He is the closest thing the team has to what Rome Smith brought to the table. GM and D Mac will definitely have to go hard in practices to match his focus since this is his last shot. I’d like to see some tank package thrown in there but I don’t think that will happen. And while I want to see the Tank Package, I don’t want him to be used only in short yardage. I say even though he isn’t the starter let him get the first called carry of the season against Nova. Btw, big shout out to former Brooklyn Tech football player, soph Thomas Plonski of Villanova. He is a hard worker(as evidenced by attending one of the better academic HS in the city/country…and my alma mater). I wish him tons of success…just none against SU.

Malone your right,they probably are playing head games with a few of these players. Syracuse has always rewarded their seniors in their senior year and this year with AAM it’s no different. In the coaches minds he’s worked real hard at building his strenght while losing 25-35 lbs. It’s just too bad that it’s taken so long for him to realize what it takes to be a Div 1 ball player.

BK, I see AAM as the change of pace to PTG, and that may also have something to do with his slot in the depth chart. If PTG fails to produce, or gets injured, I don’t think AAM becomes the starter, and in fact it may hurt his reps, as the other two are more physical than PTG, so the change of pace is less effective. I am with you in the thought that you should start with the physical and wear them down before going with a shifty, ellusive back.

Ron, all is good here. I know you have a strong desire to see Wilson in there. I like the kid too, and hope he gets his opportunity. After all, he was first to stick with us after Marrone left.
I like Wilson too…even tweeted the guy when he was being recruited. I truly(and blindly) believe that he can be a good college qb. I’ll continue saying this, I think he transfers out, maybe to an FCS program..starts plays really really well and becomes maybe a fringe late rd qb, Undrafted FA type of guy.
btw Malone, Brooklyn Tech is more of an academic “power” and doesn’t have much of an athletic legacy aside from maybe the late Conrad McRae. He oddly enough came to SU after a great HS career. He died the year of my graduation. He has a local bball tournament out here in Brooklyn aka BK. Though, I support the Red Storm on the hardwood, I have a healthy respect for the SU hoops legacy and its connections to NYC.
Other somewhat notable athletes from Tech that I can think of:
Maurice Yearwood-1000pt scorer who went on to become a pg for LIU Brooklyn..right down the street from Brooklyn Tech and across from the best cheesecake on the planet(Junior’s). Graduated the year before me,
Keron Henry-He was our athletic qb. Tall and pretty lanky, he ended up majoring in both computer/electrical engineering at UCONN. I think his first 2 yrs at UCONN where pre-Big East. He ultimately made the switch to wr when Dan Orlovsky seized the qb spot and became a pretty good Big East wr prospect. He played some Arena ball but ultimate his dual degrees are serving him well post football. He was in my graduating class.
Stephen Williams was another in my graduating class, he went on to play safety at Buffalo.
I hear you BK, I was clear on the origin of the BK in your handle. I am a NJ guy with BX roots. I was just having fun with the fact that you complemented the Villanova player sighting the academic reputation of his high school… that you happened to attend. Very subtle self promotion. I loved it.
No self respecting Cuse hoops fan doesn’t know who Conrad McNasty is. True shame the way that went down. Showing my age a bit here, but I was fortunate enough to see Conrad play at SU. His Senior season was my freshman year. Never forget the last second shot he sank from the top of the key on a TD pass from Mike Hopkins. Very Laettner like, and coincidentally over Nova, and in the same Spectrum that Laettner did it to Kentucky.
