Several factors triggered athlete recruit Daiquan Kelly’s feelings towards Syracuse. After the Union City, New Jersey native took an official visit up On the Hill Sunday, the writing was on the wall.
The 3-star “athlete” recruit Kelly committed to SU to notch an even 20 members to date for the Orange‚Äôs Class of 2015 class. We‚Äôve yet to reach the month of July and Syracuse has already reached the twenties for this recruiting class. Kelly discussed his commitment with The Fizz last night and lightly touched on all of those factors involved:
“The fact that it’s close to home. The business school is very important to me. My family loved it, including my sister. She loved it down there. It was a great feeling, I had fun with the coaches. Nice facilities. It felt like home down there, I just followed my heart.”

The Orange reels in its second pledge from New Jersey, a state in which the program is attempting to reestablish its recruiting routes. Tight ends coach Bobby Acosta is off to a great start and has gained a tight, knit bond with Kelly early on. 
“He went to a school 10 minutes away from me. We are alike. He loves my film. He’s a like a father. He knows what he’s doing.” 
Syracuse.com’s Nate Mink discussed plucking top prospects from the Garden State with Acosta just a few days ago. Acosta envisions solid and efficient recruiting going forward in NJ. With Penn State and Rutgers consistently landing and producing talent from there, SU would be foolish to not get more seriously invested. Doug Marrone’s departure may have semi-disrupted any connections.
Scott Shafer and George McDonald’s specialties lie in the Midwest and the south, including Georgia and Florida. But as Mink reported, Penn State has four of the top six prospects from New Jersey committed to its 2015 class, and Rutgers has three top 30 New Jersey recruits.
No way should Syracuse be allowing these schools to stomp all over them. 
Kelly has very high hopes and can’t wait to start working with other Jersey commit, RB Dontae Strickland. Whether Kelly plays some receiver on the same side of the ball as Strickland is unclear. Kelly admitted he loves to hit, so his passion craves the defensive backfield as a free safety. Clearly, he and Strickland have talked:
“Oh that’s like my brother. We are talking about turning this thing around. We’re going to win an ACC Championship, get our degree and hopefully everything is great from that point.”
Kelly says Syracuse has him 100 percent. Despite traveling from Rutgers Saturday after a 7-on-7 tournament to SU, Kelly says the program has nothing to worry about and that he is loyal.

This verbal sounds solid but you never know. I would like Pickard and Ryslik to round out the NJ class this year. Ginetti and Guidice are NJ kids too. Penn State will always get several of the top NJ kids.
The national powers will always recruit the best of NJ too. SU can snag a few good ones but I don’t see us attracting a top ten NJ player anytime soon.
I agree that competition will always be fierce, but I am not sure SU EVER got the top talent from NJ. That said, I would never trade what we’ve had. I had a twitter convo with Orange alum Madei Williams, who was Brandon Wimbush’s personal trainer and QB coach, and he said he’s got a few in mind he’d like to steer our way. I too want Pickard, but don’t think we’ll take Ryslik. I think we are hoping for Fox and the NY duo of Robinson and Sheppard. Don’t think we get all that, but with this full a class, we can take our time and focus on them. Still say Ellison is in the fold.

Great posts guys and I also know that it’s not over until it’s over for NJ recruits. We only have to go back a year to the Jason Cabinda flipping to Penn St ordeal.
@Malone,people will always say that we’ve never recruited the best out of NJ. You may be right,but lets take a look at the careers of players like Nate Helmsley and Donovan Darius.both players came to Syracuse as N/R 2* players and ended up as 10* NFL players. That’s right 10* players.
@Terry; it takes a real good person to admit he made a mistake. I for one accept your apology and I feel that Acosta has just begun to scratch the surface recruiting NJ. I feel that if given time,Syracuse will win some of those battles with Penn St and Acosta will bring some of those top ten players home to Syracuse where they belong.
That Terry is the “homie” in me talking and as sure as “God made little green apples”,I know that it’s going to happen.
Johnny Morant was a 5* and Quintin Spotwood
was a 4* or 5*. They were top 10 NJ players. Prior to these guys SU gave #44 to a NJ running back from Deptford. His name escapes me but he was rated very high in NJ. Going back to the late 70’s, Jim Collins from Mendham was an AA MLB for SU. Leon Watts from Edison was a DE. Kenny Mandeville was a FB and blocked for Joe Morris for 3 years. I think SU plays Penn State again next year. A win would be huge for NJ recruiting. Even a close loss against Hackenberg would help too.
