Pretty easy to forget a huge weekend of football recruiting for Syracuse!
The entire campus continues to soak in the basketball program’s thrilling win over Duke, and Super Bowl XLVIII claimed most of Sunday. The excitement carries on into the work week for football, as the Orange got four commits on the gridiron during an action-packed weekend just days prior to National Signing Day.
The newest members, 19-22, of the current 2014 commit list:
            Jalen Harvey             DT       6’2” 300 lbs.
Jonathan Thomas    OLB    6’3” 210 lbs.
Adly Enoicy                TE       6’4” 215 lbs.
Antwan Cordy           CB       5’9” 180 lbs.
There’s no time to relax as NSD is less than 48 hours away. The splash of additions is only a tease of what’s in store for Wednesday. Each of these recruits has his own personal path to pledging Orange. More importantly, they fulfill needs and bolster depth at certain positions. The Fizz dissects the new cast of characters on board.
Jalen Harvey’s commitment means noticeable size and dominance on the defensive line. The Clay-Chalkville product has been through quite the recruiting obstacle course in recent weeks. Once committed to South Alabama, Harvey flipped from it to Western Kentucky, then to Syracuse on Saturday. He visited over the weekend—and what do you know, third time’s the charm. Harvey via Twitter:

He’s got a shot to fill in right away on the DL for the Orange. Jay Bromley is leaving, so there is a wide-open battle for playing time. Syracuse missed out on Zeek Rodney, as he committed to Wake Forest. Harvey entertained a visit at Boise State, so he’s no slouch of a player. You could say he’s just another big body, but the staff is high on the fact he competes. Another note is that Harvey is the lone prospect to represent Alabama. Regional diversity looks good for the program.
Jonathan Thomas was the first of three to commit to SU on Super Bowl Sunday. He gives the nod to Syracuse over Cincinnati, Indiana, Marshall and Oklahoma. The program salutes key contributor Marquis Spruill and goal-line weapon, also a LB in Lewellyn Coker. Although there are plenty of guys returning, such as Cam Lynch and Dyshawn Davis for their final go-arounds, it doesn’t hurt to add a few LBs. It’s been awhile, but linebacker recruits are no strangers to this class. Zaire Franklin and Paris Bennett (OLBs) as well as Colton Moskal (MLB) assure plenty of insurance. Thomas on Twitter:

Adly Enoicy is an attractive player the Orange luckily got to down the stretch. He has above average height and the exact frame you’d want out of a tight end. Looking at Enoicy’s offer sheet, Syracuse competed with some top programs for his services. Offers out of the national championship representatives, Florida State and Auburn, as well as Central Florida, Florida and USC are just some Enoicy received. He recently committed to Florida International on January 22. That changed awfully quick, as George McDonald worked his magic again to real in the Delray Beach product. Enoicy has the opportunity to work on the same side of the ball again with his former HS teammate Brisly Estime. He turned out okay in his freshman season as he earned a lot of playing time, especially in the Texas Bowl, as he made big plays on offense and special teams. Estime’s increased role as the season progressed has to influence Enoicy in some regard. “The Mailman” McDonald is open to diversify the playbook in any fashion.
Antwan Cordy rounds out the bunch of defensive back prospects for this class in all likelihood. He makes the fourth DB for 2014, as he joins fellow FL natives Juwan Dowels and Cordell Hudson, and Chicago’s Lamar Dawson. Cordy also got some decent offers from schools such as ACC teams Duke and Georgia Tech. His immediate thoughts to committing:

All cornerback/safety guys are all going to have a shot to play. It cannot be said enough how much SU pride itself in finding multiple options for the secondary. A 4.45 40-yard isn’t too shabby. Quickness and solid hands are what the staff’s looking for.
Now all of a sudden we’ve got ourselves a loaded 2014 class heading into NSD. 22 commits on board, but still two days to play with. The phones will be ringing and flights will be planned back and forth. Syracuse is putting the finishing touches.

You referred to Sean Hickey in your article as a defensive lineman. He is an Offensive Tackle.
I guess the Syracuse Basketball Team wasn’t the only winners on Saturday night. Four possibly five football verbal committments to the orange. It looks like Christmas has come early this year for Coach Shafer and the football program.

I thought Enoicy had already committed to a school and decided to stay away from Syracuse because of the wheather. I guess recruiting a player is never over. It looks like this coaching staff is relentless/agressive in it’s pursuit of recruits and has a personality of a “PitBull”. It’s about time we turned the corner.
This class has size,speed and athletes that will compete as true freshmen,recievers coming in at 6’3″-6’6″ tall. Have we ever had anything like that before?
Except for Williams out of NYC,there were no JUCO players added to the team this year. Congratulations to Coach Shafer and staff for putting together a decent 2014 class,that I feel has more than 2 or 3 4* athletes on it for the football program.
Thomas by far is the “peach” of this recent crop! Size and speed. I don’t get all the DB’s and some are of the small(height) version. But Cordy does look to have some jumps!! Enoicy could work out nicely except his undecidedness recently!!
Class rated at 57 now with 3 days left!! Need “OL” badly!!! But need 3 stars to get to lower 50’s hopefully!! But that in itself still is not all that exciting for program building. But its an improvement, we’ll take it. With better team next year, new facilities, and please HCSS stop the stupid comments like the Atlanta snow stuff and this program will slowly be “BACK”!!
After one of the most boring SB’s of all time(Eli did keep the family record for SB MVP’s)the NCAA has got to be beaming!! With the College Football playoffs(I feel it should 8 teams instead of 4 teams)coming next year the NCAA might inch closer to the NFL in popularity. To me NCAA FB is of equal or better value before this SB!! Because EVERY games counts in college instead of the NFL!! This years NC game showed the excitement of college ball!! But also throw in SU’s win over Duke in the Dome and that painted master piece and you see that excitement of the college games that the NFL just can’t capture!!
DO NOT FORGET THE KIDS OF PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!
Someone needs to check the accuracy of info before it is posted. Harvey has nothing to do with Sean hickey. Hickey os OT, Harvey DT. Also, Harvey was the first to commit out of this group, not Thomas.
I just hope we add the OLINE candidate Ward, WR Ishmael and maybe an additional DTackle…
I think that brings us up to 25 and class ranking of right about 50…I think we’re anywhere from 52- 57 with the 3 rating agencies.

I think the writer made a distinction about when these recruits “verbaled”..and that being Sunday…
You are correct in that Harvey committed on Saturday..and him being first to commit.
Maybe it was pretty easy to forget about for a guy who follows Cuse football close enough to be concerned about how thin the DL is after Sean Hickey??? First of all that is just a terrible way to start an article that falls under football recruiting. Us real fans were extremely excited about this news 24 hours ago when it was actually happening. And really, I’m sorry, but that is just unacceptable to have such little knowledge of the team to refer to this seasons top draft prospect on the wrong side of the ball. I apologize, because I’m not trying to be rude, but time and time again you guys put together these articles that show just how little you know/care about SU football, and then often use this skewed view and try to pass it off as a sound representation of the fan base you clearly know little about. I know I don’t have to visit this site, I only do for recruiting info/interviews for obvious reasons, but still it is disappointing to see. Guys at Orange Fizz I wish you the best but if you want our views you should really take the perspective of a true SU fan, not just a passerby.
3 big targets still on the board for this years reciting class: WR Ishmael, OL Ward, DL Samuels. Congrats to the staff for putting together what certainly looks to be one of the best classes SU has has in the 21st century. Finish strong and as always Go Orange!!!

It would be real nice for all football fans if they were to put the NCAA National Championship game on just before the Super bowl every year. Can you imagine the interest if both games were to be played in the same day.
The upside would be the money generated for this game would be staggering.
The downside would be–the game would never get played on the same day as the SB because I believe that the college game would over take the SB in ratings and their not going to let that happen.

But holding a championship game after the 2nd semester starts, wouldn’t that mean these “student athletes” would need to be making satisfactory academic progess a little while longer??

Yes that is what I meant. Harvey technically committed on Saturday while the other three did on SB Sunday. Thomas was the first to commit yesterday.

I don’t believe Bromley has an eligibility left and will be gone this year to the draft. Harvey along with Crume and Williams will be competing for the rotation at DT. Unless I missed something he is gone.
This is shaping up as a very good class. If we can add OL Ward, WR Ishmael, and DT Samuels it would then be a great class.
You edit the article by taking out one glaring error, mentioning Hickey as a DL, and replace it with another, stating Bromleyes has a year of eligibility left. The name you are looking for is Eric Crume. Seriously you guys need to get it together. Are you guys, the writers of Orange fizz, actual SU fans, or just students who feel obligated to write about the “other “major sport SU plays. Because believe it or not there is a multitude of SU fans who take their football team seriously, which you may not have realiz2d from the outside lookingIn, but from the inside looking out you guys seem like SUNJ fans, AND THAT AIN’T RIGHT! This is the straw that broke the camels back, plenty of other SU sporting sites I can visit with accurate articles put together by loyal Cause fans. S Nolin, I think there is confidence that all three of the guys you mention are silent commits. That would get us to the 25 limit, and that would rank us as high as 48 from what I have read. As to the abundance of DBs, I think Dawson may not make it this year. He may gray-shirt. Apart from other things, that would put him in this class, but make him a January 2015 enrollee (like Williams and Cooper are I believe this year).
This is a must read. Terry you keep on referring to the amount of stars a player recieves or may not recieve. You need to read this article.

Say what you want about coach shafer guy’s. Shafer talks the talk and walks the walk and his personality is only going to bring in more top talent the longer he stays here. First full year of recruiting his players and brings in possibly the best class swince the 1959 national championship team.

Love Ishmael and a huge get. But there is no reason for him to commit on Wednesday except for notoriety!! He knows where he’s going!! SORRY folks!! And I’m getting concerned about all this flipping going on nation wide. I don’t think its always been that why in past years!! Just seems it happens regularly now!! It has happened to SU and SU has done it too!! No one is innocent here!! Just thinking-WHY SO!!
One recruiting site has SU at 51(no way) others are around 56(closer). Ishmael and others coming aboard should get SU to that 51 ranking then. But I hear a few of these SU commits might not or won’t make because of grades. That happens again because the better programs know that and won’t gamble on these players, but SU almost has to!! Its happened before so why not now!!
I love the fact that we are getting recruits from Georgia….Florida…..and Alabama! New York State and New England rate way behind these areas in terms of Division I football players. Now that we are in the ACC, we need better players! As we improve as a team, the top players in NY state will want back in on the Cuse…..the question is…will we we still want them?
I think this class is the best that we’ve had in a loooooooooong time. We currently have 3(4*) recruits with more of the 16(3*) recruits deserving a 4* rating,add in 2(2*)recruits and a JUCO player makes for a good discussion as possibly being the best of all time.
If Steve Ishmael commits on Wednesday,the people down in and around Miami say that he’s probably the best WR in the area and should have received a 5* rating. Wow a 5* rating.
When reading about these recruits,one thing sticks out the most is the statements that some are making after being overlooked by other schools. They’re coming to Syracuse with an attitude/swagger and some are saying that they want to be the best.
Jalen Harvey—I believe that I can play as well or better than any 5* recruit in my class.
Wayne Williams—I’m going to bring that NYC swagger up to Syracuse when I come.
Steve Ishmael—getting overlooked by the major programs in Florida and all of the SEC has said he’s going to prove his worth from day one and is looking forward to playing Florida State. I hope he along with Denzel Ward and Keyton Samuels decide to commit to Syracuse on Wednesday.
I also believe that with 3 or 4 of the players leaving the team,Syracuse brings in another 3 or 4 recruits bringing the total to arround 28 maybe 29 players before all is said and done.
I’m still not sure how Williams will work out!! The better players always seem to not snag up on issues!! Ishmael is a must get. Because SU’s QB position still is average at best. DL and OL depth is a must too!! Ron I feel SU so far only has one 4 star Enoicy is a high 3 star at best not 4!! I think Thomas could be the real surprise of this draft. But what really scares me is the foot of snow coming Wednesday!! Seriously that could effect signings if it is shown in the right light by the wrong people!!
Jonathan Thomas? Surprise Terry? I think he might be the best recruit outside of KJ in the class as far as nationally recognized?Didnt he have a Oklahoma and B1G offer? Looks like Enolcy flipped from FIU to us this week or am I thinking of someone else?I love the Thomas commit like Terry.
