The Orange avoided a letdown Monday night after Saturday’s historic game, winning 61-55 against Notre Dame. Syracuse is the unanimous no. 1 team in both the AP and Coaches Polls, the first time since Duke University in 2010-2011. The team has really come together.

But who is the man of the hour tonight?

That’s Trevor Cooney.

Cooney finished the game with a career-high 33 points, going 9-of-12 from behind the arc. Although he missed his first three-pointer in both the first and second half, the Delaware product was 75 percent from three-point land. When asked after the game when he felt all his shots were going down, Cooney said:

“I think it was after my third but the one going into halftime, I definitely thought I was in some groove to hit that one.” He also mentioned the importance of a quick start. “I felt good coming into the game and I got into a good rhythm early and to shoot like this you need to get into a good rhythm early. Teammates found me in good spots and I was just able to get going.”

Syracuse fans wish the same could be said about some of his other teammates. C.J. Fair had a game to forget, going 2-of-13 from the field and only scoring six points on the night.

“He just didn’t shoot well today. It’s going to happen. He had one game like this earlier in the year. I guess you are allowed a couple,” said Coach Boeheim after the game.

Notre Dame definitely gave the Orange a run for its money. However, like Syracuse has done all year, one of its offensive weapons stole the show. Syracuse’s next game will not be until next week, when the Orange takes on the Clemson Tigers Sunday in the Carrier Dome. This will be a much-deserved and much-needed rest for the Orange.

The “Legend that is Trevor Cooney” is growing stronger by the minute.

Trevor will go down in the history books as one of the best ever to play the game at Syracus and will set the record for most 3 pt shots made in his career.
