Syracuse vs. Duke: What the Huge Stage Means for Basketball Recruiting

Fives reasons why the Syracuse-Duke matchup is huge for recruiting purposes.

The big games bring out the biggest names, and that could include high school athletes too.

With the highly anticipated Duke vs. Syracuse game only two days away, Syracuse has the tools to win it this year. Tyler Ennis has proven to be one of the nation’s best point guards, even as a freshman. Jerami Grant has stepped into a big role as a starter and is still expected to leave the 315 for the NBA after this season.

Since the game is nationally televised on ESPN and Syracuse is the site for ESPN’s College GameDay, this is a game the nation’s top high school ballers will be watching.

In other words, this game is big for recruiting.

The Orange has gone deep into the NCAA tournament two years in a row. With a No. 2 ranking and talent at all six positions on the court (if you count Jim Boeheim as the Hall of Fame head coach), the Orange has the tools to win its first title since 2003 and its second in school history. The face of the ACC has always been either Duke or UNC. Syracuse vs. Duke in the Dome is the game Orange fans have been waiting for since it was announced that Syracuse would join the ACC. For any high school athlete looking at attending an ACC school, this is the game to sway him in the right direction.

Record-setting attendance. Syracuse should expecting attendance to surpass what it was for last year’s final game against Georgetown. This is probably one of, if not the, hottest tickets in college basketball. Students camped out for this. It will be loud. For the high school stars who want to play in front of diehard fans who brave the frigid, frozen tundra we call Syracuse, NY, they’ll get to see it for sure.

Competition. This is a battle of not only two very talented teams, but of two nationally recognized powerhouse programs. This is a game for the recruits to attend and to sit courtside for. It’s the perfect opportunity to see what college basketball is about. It’s a battle, and Syracuse will be looking for not only bragging rights, but to continue its tradition of winning against the nation’s top opponents.

Visits. When Ennis took his visit to the Dome and watched a game, he noticed the atmosphere and the fans. He wanted to play in front of loud, dedicated fans. That’s what he does now as the starting point guard. Nothing has changed since he was in high school. If any high school basketball player has a similar goal, he would get the feel for it at this game.

National TV spotlight. If Syracuse continues to take advantage of national spotlight games and pull out wins, it will only mean more opportunities in the future. Playing on national TV is the chance to have people know the players. It’s a chance to let everyone know about the team and watch it play. For the players with the big wish of playing on the big stage in the NBA, the national powerhouse which plays games on national TV is the right fit.

Syracuse and Duke tip off at 6:30 p.m. EST. It’s the first of two during the season. The Orange visit the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium on February 22.

    @Austin Pollack;

    Austin a couple of things come to mind about getting all of the exposure by playing on national tv.

    I don’t want Syracuse to become another Kentucky. What I mean is that I don’t want all of the top recruits coming here to play and leaving for the NBA after one year.

    CJ Fair is what college basketball is all about. I give him a bunch of credit for four years and graduating. I hate to think Jeramy Grant will leave with CJ Fair for the NBA after the season is done. when someone is giving you a chance by waiving millions in front of your face I know it’s hard for any 19 year old to turn his head and walk away from that kind of money. Tyler Ennis needs to stay and graduate from Syracuse. If he’s this good now,can you imagine what he’s going to be like in four years? Dare I say the #1 pick in the draft.

    I put on this website three years ago, with the talent that the Cuse is bringing in that they would make a legitimate run for it’s second national championship. This could be the year. Wouldn’t that be great if it happened?

    I also made mention that if Syracuse were to win another championship,Boeheim would turn the program over to Hopkins and the rest of the young guns and retire as head coach of the orangemen.

    Please everyone,I am not starting a rumor about Jim Boeheim retiring at the end of the year. It’s just a feeling that I have if he were to win his second championship.

    Well everone do you all remember the old Big East battles that were played in the dome during the second half of the season? We all got worked up for the likes of Georgetown,Villanova and Pittsburgh and St Johns to come north to Syracuse and put a show on for all of us.

    Well let me be the first to tell you,those games pale in comparison to what’s about to happen this Saturday against Duke in the dome.

    The upstate area is going to become a ghost town. If your not part of the 35-36k crowd at the dome watching the game,I know your probably going to be in front of your tv with friends or at a local bar watching and celebrating/cheering on the orangemen to victory. This is probably the biggest game ever played in the dome,”THE BIGGEST”.

    The remaining eleven games on the Syracuses schedule are going to be brutal folks. Down right brutal. This is what we’ve all been waiting for.

    Big East,were we ever a member of that league? Do you think that the “Catholic Seven” are missing the old days and should have kept they mouths shut? I do.

    Go Cuse kick Duke’s a$$e$.

    Syracuse (20-0 7-0 ACC),boy that looks real good.

    I think Jimmy doesn’t coach in 2016.Regardless if he gets lucky this coming March and it will require a whole lot of luck.Excellent defense but an offense that can be more than frustrating.What happens this Saturday will be very important to Jimmy. Mike K is widely regarded as the best in the current game.Beating his team in front of the largest crowd of the seaon is very important to Jimmy even if he doesn’t say it out loud.Boeheim’s ego demands this achievement.

    “I don‚Äôt want Syracuse to become another Kentucky.”

    This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while. Why would Syracuse not want to be a perennial national title contender with scores of NBA talent coming through? If you’d rather have a less successful team just so that players stay 3-4 years, then go root for Pitt.

    In this day and age, players want and deserve to get paid. All the good players are going to leave early. The top programs are going to have to deal with it if they want to stay competitive.

    Ron,

    I don’t see Ennis staying. I don’t know if he will be in Syracuse next year, but he’s ready. He has shown that. Sometimes he looks like a freshman in the first half, but like a junior or senior in the second half. Needs to be an upperclassman during the entire game.

    My take on CJ is that he stayed another year because his draft position will be better. That’s jus what I think.

  6. Ron Avatar

    @Zach;

    I made that statement in regasrds to having players come here for one year and then leave for the NBA which leaves a program in flux 100% of the time.

    How’s Kentucky doing this year? Their record stands at (15-5 5-25 SEC). I watched them play LSU the other night and all I see was Calipari ranting and raving on the side line. Damn I thought he was going to have a stroke. All of those 5* athletes didn’t look that good to me,what can I say?

    What about all of those Kentucky players that turned pro the last couple of years,how are they doing? What’s that you say? Oh I see,they’re setting the bench learning the game. Wow,I thought they knew how to play and they improved it while spending one year at the great University of Kentucky under the guidance of John Calipari. From the articles that I’ve been reading even the kentucky Fans are getting sick of the one-and-done players coming to play for the Wildcats.

    My point was I didn’t want that type of system in place here at Syracuse University. I thought it was plain and simple for people to understand. I guess I was wrong.

    Ron don’t listen to people like Zachster!! BUT GIVE ME THE STAR TALENT ANY DAY!! I just like that winning feeling. This achievement of the SUBB and staff will not go unnoticed any time soon from me or other CUSE fans!! This team still might break our hearts again but they played their a$$es off all year and you can’t forget that. But JB did say one thing interesting and I agree he said ” you don’t win with bad talent”-sound familiar -HUH!! Thank you team and JB too! Damn that took a lot to say!! LOL!!

    DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE KIDS AT PSABUSEDU!! THE NCAA DID!!

  8. Ron Avatar

    Kentucky’s record stands at (15-5 5-2 SEC)not 5-25 in league play. Sorry for the mistake fellas.

    Guys,

    Syracuse doesn’t recruit like UK. SU tries to keep a mix of upper class men and talented youngs guys. Fizz been nice to know a list of guys that would be in attendance? I know a couple that I’ve gotten from other sites(Bryant, Battle and Diange). Not sure who else but that’s a pretty good list. All top 25 guys. I’m not sure if Ennis leaves this season or waits 1 more yr just bc this draft class is going to be loaded but he won’t be here longer then 2yrs.

  10. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    Good post kiddo,couldn’t agree with you any stronger. The team has struggled a little,but is playing great. I think it would be something if Syracuse were to run the table in the ACC and finished the season undefeated. I also agree with you that it takes talent to win. Just to be honest kiddo,I realize that talent comes in all shapes and sizes.

    Go back to the beginning of basketball in November and think about the people who were complaining about Trevor Cooney saying that he couldn’t play the game. Not doing so bad for a white kid is he? He’s proven the old theory about white men can’t jump.

    Are you going to the game on Saturday or are you staying home and watching the game on tv? Either way enjoy it.

    Calipari be animated during games, but that’s more a result of his personality than his system.

    Still, I know what you mean with the 1-and-done model leaving teams in flux. Regardless, in almost 5 seasons at Kentucky (including this year, Calipari has a 81.7% winning percentage, 1 NCAA Championship, two Final Fours, and another Elite 8 appearance. I’d take that any day of the week.

  12. DuanyDuany Avatar
    DuanyDuany

    No one recruits like Kentucky because it’s not a sustainable model of success. Kentucky’s recruiting is great for making the school money (merchandising, alumni donations, etc.) but it’s not a good model for having success on the basketball court year in and year out. Next years team at Kentucky is going to lack the big name players that this years class has and after all the defections, they’re probably looking at the NIT again next year.

    The worst thing that could happen to SU this year is if they go into the NCAA tournament undefeated.

    Cuse will not have that problem – 4 of last 5 are on the road to close regular season, including games @Duke and @UVA.

    Ron I rarely do SUBB games anymore!! When the grandkids plead to go I’ll give in to them though!! I have attended many in the past and have been snowed in there 3 times. That was a hell of a time!! I always went to all the classic games of that particular year also. And Duke would be that for sure. Its just that seating sucks so bad at the DOME now it just ain’t worth the trip. But for SUFB there is no bad seat!! Personally and you know this, SUFB needs the dome(also Lax) and have SUBB their own separate place(SUBB and Men’s and Women’s Hockey!!) too!!

    When it comes to Kentucky and their BB success it all starts with there history and tradition!! No beating that when getting sure fire talent coming their way!! GO CUSE BEAT DUKE!!

  16. Ron Avatar

    How many of you guy’s watched the Lady Orange beat the #6 ranked North Carolina team 78-73 and go (16-5 5-3 ACC)moving them into 5th place in the league?

    If you missed the game you missed one of the best basketball games ever played by either the men or womens teams. Down 18 at half time,Syracuse came out and clawed it’s way to the win with out standing team defense using the 3-2 zone and play by B. Butler 22 Pts, 3 Reb, 3 Ast, 4 Stl, 1 Blk.

    I put this game on the same page as the mens team beating Kansas in the 2003 national championship game. I mean that’s how good this game was.

  17. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    Your right,there is no denying Kentucky tradition,they’ve earned it and I respect it. What I don’t like about the current state of affairs there,is the fact that Calipari recruits the one-and-done type players to the program. I’m sure that most of those players,if they could,would jump to the NBA right out of high school. It’s just to bad that the kids of today can’t see the long term positive effects that graduating from a college with a degree will have on their lives especially if they fail to make a roster of the team that drafts them.

    I HOPE Su can become a Kentucky and I also HOPE they never become a Kentucky… hear me out

    I would love to get premier talent year in and out and be in the natl title discussion every season.

    that being said..

    I LOVE how Cuse doesnt go the Kentucky route of recruiting and just offer to the top 5 players at each position, but istead we recruit talent for a system and you can see how guys like Jerami Grant (yes a top 40 player in the country when recruited) turned out to be a much better talent then say an Alex Poythress (a top player aty his position when being recruited)who went to Kentucky and is not as good as Grant.

  19. Carlton Avatar

    Syracuse goes after talented kids and gets them yr in an yr out but these talented kids they bring in are to fit their specific system. Most of the guys on our team where top 60 players /w the exception of a few of the guys on the current roster. Only the top 1% can say that about their roster. I saw someone say something about UK success. Cool thats great. SU is 2 big men away from at least 2 more final 4s and maybe 2 NC’s. Throw out those tough break and I doubt we see anyone in here saying they want the “UK way”.

    Ron,good mention of Lady Orange…too bad fizz don’t do periodical threads on HC Q’s girls?I was a little dissapointed in them dropping out of the top 20 but they should get back in after that big win!! How many fans watch them at the Dome? They deserve more recognition like UConn, L’ville and Lady Knights get!!!

    6. Syracuse Basketball Fans:

    Syracuse has been a very successful program during the Jim Boeheim era. The Orange(men) even won the national championship in 2003 — thanks to the sensational freshman Carmelo Anthony. But many fans of the Orange believe that the school is one of the 5-10 best college basketball programs in the country, and it’s simply not true. SU, under Boeheim, has only reached the Final Four in four of his 38 seasons. In contrast, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, the only head coach with more wins, has won four national championships and reached the Final Four 11 times in 33 years leading the Blue Devils.

    Syracuse is consistently one of the most talked-about teams every year – they’ve even been ranked No. 1 during the season numerous times in the past decade. But when it comes to postseason success, the Orange falter more than some of the other “elite” schools – for whatever reason. Syracuse fans are notorious for citing excuses – like Fab Melo’s suspension or Arinze Onuaku’s knee injury – as reasons why they can’t get it done in March.

    P.S. This pretty much sums it up nicely .
