Fizz Five: Syracuse Squeezes Maryland 20-3, Eyes Bowl with 5th Win

The Fizz talks five big points from the win over the Terps, putting SU just a game away from the postseason.

AP

Syracuse thrashed Maryland Saturday in a 20-3 win. The victory puts the Orange over .500 for the first time this season and in position for a bowl. The offense was more efficient against Maryland than even Wake Forest and the defense played just as well as last week. Let’s get to breaking down the five biggest takeaways of the Orange’s second ACC road win.

This defense is for real

There is a fair argument that Wake Forest and Maryland are not the best offensive teams in the country, but even with that the Orange held them to three combined points after allowing 56 to Georgia Tech in the previous game. To put that in perspective, Tulane and Wagner scored 17 combined points against the Orange, and everyone will agree that Wake and Maryland are better than Tulane and Wagner. The front line of the defense harassed C.J. Brown and forced two interceptions out of the Maryland QB. The front line was outstanding against the running attack as well, holding the Terps to just 81 rushing yards. The secondary played well again, and much of the success could be because of how well the d-line is doing getting pressure on the QB. For the first time since 1997, the Orange kept its opponent out of the end zone in two straight games. That‚Äôs impressive regardless of any team’s shortcomings.

Turnovers are key

The Orange are 4-1 when it wins the turnover battle (with the lone loss coming to Penn State in the season opener). Syracuse forced two interceptions and two fumbles compared to one interception and one fumble on offense. The defense did a great job pressuring Brown and flying to the ball when passes were completed. On offense, it was more feeding the running game and playing smart with Terrel Hunt.

Keep feeding the backfield beast

Jerome Smith pounded the Maryland defense for 118 yards and two touchdowns. When Prince-Tyson Gulley went down with an injury, George Morris II stepped in and was able to provide a speed burst for the Orange and give Smith a breather. Terrel Hunt is still a weapon in the running game as he showed again this week with nearly 70 yards on the ground. The concerns surrounding the running game at the beginning of the season seem to be gone as Jerome Smith and the offensive line turned a corner a couple weeks back.

Terrel Hunt is visibly improving

After two outstanding games, Hunt struggled in games against Clemson, NC State and GT, but he has been getting better the past two weeks. It is pretty obvious at this point. Hunt is not making some of the mistakes he made earlier in the year and he had no interceptions against Maryland. Although he still hasn’t thrown for a touchdown in ACC play, Hunt is making better throws and putting the Orange in a better position to score than he had during the first three ACC games. Of course, Hunt still makes some questionable plays, and perhaps takes off to run too early sometimes, but he is still just a redshirt sophomore and has two more years to grow and become a better quarterback.

A bowl is well within sight

Just two years ago, the team was 5-2 before losing 5 straight and missing out on a bowl game. With the win, the Orange now sit just one win away from bowl eligibility and have three games remaining, including two winnable home games. If Syracuse can win just one of two home games against BC and Pitt, the Orange will go to back-to-back bowl games for the first time since 1996-1998, when Donovan McNabb was under center. This would be a huge success for the Orange after losing its head coach, offensive coordinator, two starting receivers, starting left tackle and quarterback from last year’s Big East co-champion. In year one of the ACC, a 6-6 or 7-5 season with a chance to improve on that in a bowl game would be outstanding for first year head coach Scott Shafer.

This week was a big W for the Orange. The win gives the Orange two wins on the road in conference play, something Syracuse hadn’t done since 2010 when they won four road games in Big East play. The game signaled a turnaround in the Syracuse defense that played so horribly against GT but so outstanding against Wake and Maryland. Now just one win away from bowl eligibility, the Orange travel to Tallahassee for a big matchup with second-ranked Florida State.

    FSU is a wash, they are title bound.

    I really wish SU had a do -over on that GT game..

    Bowl eligibility is so close! GO CUSE

    i have never felt threatened by maryland, but still feel this win was big for our syracuse team. i always liked our defense and also beleive that our defense is carrying us this season.i really hope our offense can consistantly put up some points in these last 3 games because florida state, pitt, and boston college will not be push overs. please win one of these games..

    *Correction – Hunt did throw 1 interception against Maryland.

    Going into FSU, we have to be somewhat upbeat. I know that this game is a wash, but i feel like this may be the biggest game, besides Clemson that ‘Cuse has played in many years. A win could catapult this team in so many directions. Do I think we win, No. But I think we play them tough and give them a game.

    Its more good exposure for SU.

    This Florida State game is on National TV….repeat..National TV. The exposure alone will help our recruiting efforts. We can not stack up talent wise to Florida State but, we can come out and play with effort and heart…that is what I am looking for. If we do that, we can win over some recruits and continue to pull in more talent. Go Cuse…..

    Hey guy’s all great supportive posts. Enjoyed reading them all.

    @Seth Goldberg;

    With Kimble,Wilson,Edouard,Long joining the competition for the QB position next year what chance does Terrell Hunt have of winning the position? I just don’t see him winning it and believe that he will get moved to play another position or maybe ending up transferring out.

    “after losing its head coach, offensive coordinator, two starting receivers, starting left tackle and quarterback”

    After the great migration/exodus of 2012 from Syracuse,if Coach Shafer leads the Orangemen to a bowl game this year,I believe he gets awarded the ACC Coach of the Year.

    I hope Syracuse stays competitive against FSU this weekend. National exposure,WOW!!!! The remaining two games at home should bring the ‘DAYS OF OLD” back with the team playing in front of a near sellout crowd for both games. Let’s rock the house people,lets show a national audience what kind of fans support the Orangemen.

    There was a lot of debate early on discussing who could be ourf next rivalry. Well,let me ask,does it get any better than having three Northeastern schools going at each other every year? It just doesn’t get any better. Christmas comes early this year and yes Terry there truly is a Santa Claus.

    Seth your drunk!!! HUNT made a real nice throw over a defender then the very next play threw a terrible interception. HCSS instead of running out the clock,near the end of the game, let HUNT threw a few and HUNT screwed those passes up to as incompletes. He then ran off the field and tried to hide knowing he was “bad”-LOL!! No passing TDs for games in this modern college football is a joke. FSU will totally embarrass SU with no passing game. SU has a good running game, but FSU,BC and Pitt are not Wagner or Tulane. With no passing game means making no mistakes or not getting penalities!! And we know about these issues. Look the “D” from the front,middle and back end are our heros no doubt. While the “O” and its RBs are showing greatness. The OL is getting better, some slight improvement from the WRs, the lack of TE support is confusing, but not damaging. Even the ST play is good and so far no mistakes. But the QB postion is totally lacking so far this year. He’s learning yes, but not in the right direction. No TDs in games for weeks is not accepable if SU is going bowling. Playing the # 1 glamour postion in college football to “NOT” make mistakes is a accident waiting to happen. I like the kid, but he’s really playing not to lose instead of playing to win. The staff throws in flea-flickers and even instead of running out the clock let him throw a couple and he can’t even finish those off. So the staff are wondering too about his abilities. Right now he’s all SU has, but Seth to say he is visibly improving might be correct. What ever QB play that is??? But as being a DIV 1 QB so far he’s not!! Just imagine what if he was of decent quality!! Oh my head hurts then!! Pass the aspirin!!

    Great win on the road in the ACC. Actually any win in the ACC is a great win especially on the road. Congrats to the coaching staff as to me they get the award for most improved. OC has finally realized that this offense should center around Jerome Smith. Pound the ball, keep defense fresh and you will win games. Last year with Nassib and the WR we could throw it all over the field, not this year. DC and defense congrats you are playing as well as anyone in the country right now. The Georgia Tech debacle is over. Hunt is still not accurate on throws and looks to run to much but he is what he is and as long as he continues to get better lets stick with him and enjoy watching him improve over the next few years as he has the talent. Very Happy Cuse fan today.

    I think Hunt starts next year. Again Redshirt Sophmore with 2 more years to improve. Got to like the upside. He will finally have some competiton behind him so it will be interesting how long he would stay the QB if he has a poor performance next year. Plus our Wide Receivers will be much better along with the O-Line.

    We need to jam the Dome against Pitt and BC and win 7 games. The FSU game is a steep challenge and whatever happens in this game SU needs to make the best of a tough tough offense and defense and make a good showing.

    Coach Shaf and his D are the real deal.

    We have to pack the dome and get 2 more ACC wins and go bowling.

    Syracuse has some serious losers as fans. Talking about who we might recruit for next year or hoping we don’t get beat by more than 70 points or hoping the big boys don’t hurt any of our frail sickly players.Pathetic. We have an huge OPPORTUNITY to play the #2 team in the country and to gain an ennormous coup for the program. A school with the history and tradition of Syracuse should expect to win a game like this ,even during lean times.

    ROF, while I can see your reasoning and it is probably justificaiton enough, there is no way Shafer sniffs coach of the year, maybe even if we finish 8-4 (and for the record, I don’t think we will). There is very little chance in my mind the ACC will let a guy who wasn’t in the league last year be it’s best coach right out the gate. FSU, GT, Miami, VT, and even Clemson have as compelling a story and I tend to believe they are more likely to reward the front runners. For the reord I want 7-5, but see 6-6. Pitt is hot right now and BC has played some good teams VERY tough. Just don’t think we get them both, as much as I want it.

    SS 129 hit it right. Pack the Dome and make it hot and loud in there!! Letsee what happens!!

    JB FSU is no Nebraska of years ago. We all know there has to be some god like intervention to beat FSU. They are way better than PSU/NW/Clemson and GT!! So what do you expect?? The “D” will play their hearts out(I hope better than GT) and the “O” will try not to blow plays and SU will probably get beat. Keep it close for awhile will work for many. Beating BC/PITT is the major goal now and it ain’t going to be easy, since both of them are bowl hunting too!!

    OC 27 I still think the QB position will or could hurt this team. If HUNT was average at best we wouldn’t be talking about him. I just feel he just doen’t have the mental game down. He has had plenty of time to work on that and no TDs since Tulane plus the staff showing their mistrust(Flea-flickers and instead of running out the clock at MD HCSS let him throw it up and he still didn’ do the job)!! I almost puked up my wings the other day when they said HUNT is better than Ryan in their SO years. Ryan was no ELI in his SO year but he was no HUNT either in his SO year either!! Come on!!! LOL!!!

  16. Ron Avatar

    @JB;

    Your probably talking about me asking Carlton to pass it along to the team to please try hard to keep the score under 100 points when we play FSU. Have you ever seen Syracuse enter a game a 38.5 point underdog? I can’t remember that happening ever!!!!!

    Look most of us think Florida State will play Alabama for the National Championship,Jamis Winston is the real deal here. Can our defense get to him,I sure hope so,do some of us like to throw remarks around that might get people a bit riled,ABSOLUTELY. Most of us live in the real world and know all to well about the team Syracuse is about to face on Saturday. Do I dare dream of an upset,you betcha,if one does occure on Saturday it will send shock waves around the world and the rest of us will realize that Coach Shafer is leading the Orangemen back to the promised land(as promised) that so many of us have been waiting for. And for the remaining two games against Pitt and BC,well they’d probably mess their britches after watching it happen and realize that the Syracuse team isn’t about to lay down for anyone. Winning the last three games of the season would be humungous for our program.

    I don’t see anyone here putting the Syracuse Team down one bit. I do see people making factual statements and hope that at best Syracuse plays FSU really hard and keeps the game respectable. You see if that does happen it would build confidence in a group of players knowing that they could play against the best and maybe keeping it close would help bring in recruits that at some point would let the Orangemen win those type of games.

    I watched the FSU/Wake Forest game over the weekend and I honestly felt that FSU could have scored over 100 points against them. Bobby Bowden trained Jimbo Fisher all of the important things about being a head coach. One of those being if your the superior team on the field,never run the score up on your opponents. That’s class man real class.

    If you watch the game on Saturday you will be watching the redshirt freshman(Jamis Winston) who will probably win the Heisman Trophy at the end of the season. I know he’s got my vote.

    GO CUSE;

  17. JB Avatar

    Terry; FSU has all the pressure on them, really everything to lose,little to gain. SU has nothing to lose and a lot to gain. If we can control the ball and clock with a strong ground attack, maybe Jamais gets Nervous and the 1st year starter has an off game.

    JB I hope your right, but the GT game showed me its probably a woodshed game for FSU. Mainly because of HCSS inexperiences!! I just hope SU makes it a game!! Just wanted to share with you a couple statements that was posted on the syr.com website today.

    here they are;

    Like a lot of folks ‚Äî including those oddsmakers who’ve determined that you and your second-ranked Seminoles are some six touchdowns better than SU ‚Äî I believe we’re only four days away from another Florida State blowout of another overmatched squad.

    P.S. You will take it easy on the Orange, won’t you?

    In conclusion JB I view the members here as being honest/pragmatic people who aren’t afraid to state facts by “telling it like it is”,no one person using this website has put the Syracuse Football Team down. I just haven’t seen it,but I wanted you to read what other’s are saying about the game this weekend.

    Have a great day,I’m sure that both you and I are hoping for the upset to happen. I’m just looking for Syracuse to play the game hard and look respectable.

  21. JB Avatar

    Ron,I read the P-S, and any other website that has anything written about the Orange. Are you saying the people here are P-S lite. Same point of view, just not out and out malicious jackasses in the way it’s stated.This isn’t some remote hidden site, it’s part of the crowd.

  22. Ron Avatar

    @JB;

    Are you saying the people here are P-S lite? NO!!! I’m not saying that at all. I put those statements on here soley to let you and others know who feel that the members of this website are not(serious losers)because you don’t like our comments about this weekends game against FSU.

    Go to todays(syr.com)articles regarding the 38.5 point spread of the game and read what one of the people who projected it had to say about the game and why the point spread is so large.

    Over my life time JB I’ve been called a lot of different names being called/labeled a “serious loser” is a first. I get that your a person who get’s easly offended by what other people have to say. I’m not going to apologize to you or anyone else for my comments on the game. All of the so called pundits worry about style points being scored by the top teams this late in the season. I’m hoping FSU keeps it under 70 points. I really do.

    I love the orangemen but reality has set in,get a grip and realize along with the rest of us that FSU is the better team in this match up.

    Ron Lets get JB fired up again!! Just read an article on syracuse.com on SU’s recruiting for 2013-14!! Garbage if correct. Far less than 20 heads going to sign on a probable high 50’s class!! That is not a building like program situation. SU needs more bodies!! I agree with the article that HUNT ain’t the man. And AJ might not be the man either. So its between Edouard(if he really signs, he changed his mind once already) and the 2 redshirt FR QBs!! Right now the class is 61-63 rated and it looks it too. But it is what it is!! Need DL,TE,OL and RB!! I do agree that there are some real players in this class, but also to many hope and prays too!! I’m still learning this recruiting thing, but for sure I thought SU would bring in at least 25 but from this article said no way!! Another disappointment!! Talent will improve the CUSE not lack of it. I hope this article is like CBS’s 60 minutes all wrong!! JEZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!

  24. JB Avatar

    Hunt is playing great. For some reason the opposing OC’S will not commit to stoping our running game. There is always safeties back over the top. Like when Broyld caught that ball over the middle, there were three guys on him. Yet, they are willing to give over 200 yards on the ground with a lot of big plays . When they really try to stop our run, the passing stats will go up. And Ron, Savannah St. fans talk about worrying 70 points when they play FSU.

  25. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    you asked and I’m more than glad to oblige you Terry.

    I read the same article Terry so here’s my latest response to JB.

    @JB,your response to Terry’s post indicates you really don’t know what your talking about when it comes to the game of football. Hunt is playing great,what the hell have you been smoking? Look I don’t want to look like i’m knocking the kid,but I agree with Terry’s assessment,Terrell Hunt needs a lot of work.I know it’s not all of his fault,a lot of the responsibility falls on the receivers shoulders. For example when Terrell threw the ball over the middle to Broyld and got intercepted,it looked to me like Broyld didn’t even try for the damn ball. Ive made the statement earlier that Terrell will not and I repeat “will not” be the starting QB next year. I’m looking for either Kimble or Wilson to win the QB job and I believe that Hunt will be asked to play a different position next fall.

    Terry and I have gone to battle with each other a few times and I like debating with him. The reason I like talking things over with him is neither of us will ever back off of our points of view. Together we’ve had some great point/counter point conversations.

    in knotsMy first comment to Carlton about the FSU/Syracuse game was please pass it along to the team(FSU)to keep the score under 100 points and please try not to embarrass us to badly. I then lowered the point total to 70 points which by the looks of things got your underpants all tied up in knots and they started choking you a little.

    Understand the obstacle/challange that awaits Syracuse on Saturday. We’re asking and hoping to watch our “David defeat/kill their Goliath”. I believe that David is going to need more than a stone in this battle,maybe having an Abrahams M1 Tank with metal piercing shells to fire might do the trick. As far as Savannah St Fans goes they talk about 270 points being scored against them when playing the likes of a FSU.

    It was said last week during the FSU/Wake Forest game that Jimbo Fisher will not run the score up on anyone. Wouldn’t you just love setting in that crowd and watching while listening to the fans give the war chant while waving their arms in unison. I know I would.

    JB you can say what you want here,you may not like my or anyone elses responses to your post. But for me be warned I don’t apologize for any of my comments wheither you like them or not.

  26. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    During Marrones first year as head coach 25-28 players left the team,remember? I asked the fizz about how many recruits would Syracuse be able to bring in the following year. They told us all it was going to be 17 recruits tops. Well what happened? Syracuse brought in 25-28 recruits the following year. If you look at the Syracuse roster 24 players are going to graduate this year,and if your comments about Shafer releasing players to free up some scholarships for next year is true, then I’m guessing that Syracuse will bring in another 12-15 recruits on top of the 13 that have already committed to us. I honestly don’t believe we got back to having a full squad until this year. I mentioned to my son that it was real nice seeing all of those players on the field at “Fan Fest” this past spring. In the end I think were going to be alright with the recruiting. But you see Terry,that’s me being overly optmistic combined with being a HOMIE.

    Terry;I hope you and the grandchildren enjoy the highschool playoff game this weekend.

    Damn Russell he tells us that we shouldn’t be talking NJ highschool football and yet he’s taking his grandchildren to a playoff game here in NY. Go figure!!!!!! Enjoy the day Terry.

  27. JB Avatar

    Ron, Thaks for making my point. That interception in the Broyld play. The only reason that corner is playing so tight and and gambles to jump the route is because he has a safty over the top. So yea, they are stopping our passing game , at the expense of 200-300 yards on the ground and control of the clock.If our offesive line plays as a unit, we’ll ground and pound FSU as well.

  28. Carlton Avatar
    Carlton

    JB,

    SU can’t line up and ground and pound FSU. I don’t get how FSU doesn’t get the respect like Alabama does. FSU’s front 7 is better. Yes I said it bc it is. 62-7 FSU. You can say the pressure on them it just doesn’t matter. WF was said to be a trap game coming off a big win vs Miami. How did that turn out?

  29. Ron Avatar

    @Carlton;

    With Miami losing again last week falling to what #23 in the rankings.

    Look Carlton,JB has us all wrong,we’re not condemming the Syracuse Football Team or program here,it’s just that “more than most” realize what’s waiting for Syracuse this weekend and the mountain they have to climb. in order to gain some resemblance of respectability.

    But your comment about Alabama,that’s what a team gets,un-paralleled notoriety after winning two national championships in a row and is going for it’s third straight in three years. But I will say that FSU is the second best team in America(this week)and I believe is the only team that has a chance of upsetting them in the national championship game this year.

The only time that my old feelings are going to come into play is when Syracuse is playing a game against them. I will be rooting for the ACC teams and having 9-11 of them selected to play in the NCAA tournament come March.

    How in the world can you not be a fan and not watch the competition between the members of the greatest College Basketball Conference ever developed, play the game? Your not making any sense to me and your definately asking all the wrong questions and making all the statements here.

    I start to wonder Russell when you stop posting if everything is alright. It’s been awhile,things have been a little exciting here. Terry and I thought picking on the newbe was the right thing to do and had fun in doing it.

    I mentioned Miami to Carlton because after FSU played/crushed them,it appears that they’ve gone in the opposite direction and have fallen from the undefeated to #23 in the rankings. FSU must have put more of a hurting on them than what we’ve noticed.

    @Carlton;

    Breaking news in today’s paper has Jameis Winston being investagated for sexual assult of a woman in 2012.

    What’s up with that? Did she file charges against him immediately after it happened or did she wait until he’s become a college football star realizing that he’s probably going pro and making millions of dollars before bring the charges against him?

    Ron ,Your going to defend this. That’s just sad.

    @JB;

    Are you by-polar,what the hell is your problem? I ask questions to a peron who works at FSU and you think I’m defending a man who has been charged with sexual battery? Where the hell did you get that from? You need to stop pulling stupid statements like that out you ass bud.

    It’s just been reported that this case was just turned over to the State Attorney. Why did it take so long? Are we getting another case like the one that happened a few years ago with the Duke Lacrosse Team? If Jameis is guilty of anything,then why hasn’t he been charged yet? Approach this thing with an open mind fool. The kid just might be innocent!!!!!Ever think of that idiot?

    @JB;

    If he was the QB at Syracuse University he would not be playing in the game on Saturday. I honestly believe that he wouldn’t finish the season or play again until the investagation was over. I know people like you jump the gun and assume a person guilty before any evidence is proven one way or the other. Our legal system say’s a man’s innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. if the police find evidence that he’s involved,then give the man his day in court and let the evidence against him decide if he is guilty or not.

    I know you must have gotten a letter in the mail saying your health insurance has been canceled because of Obamacare and you can’t afford the medicine you were taking. But what ever your problem is man get it taken cared of.

    Ron, At a large state school in the SOUTH like FSU the powerful alumni base works to make things like this go away.The police, newspaper and judiciary all toe the line. It’s not like here in Syracuse where it’s the Post Standards favorite pastime to tear down Syracuse University sports.

    Guys,

    He hasn’t been charged. Heck they where told the case was closed in feb. That’s why his status for Saturdays game hasn’t changed. Not really sure what the deal is but it happened over 11 months ago. The report also says the guy was between 5’9-5’11 Winston is 6’4. Many question if any crime happened day all. Just gotta wait for it to play out before we pass judgement. I’ve met him a couple times he’s nice guy.

    JB,

    FSU was a girls only school for many yr’s our donor base isn’t quite as large as some of those other southern schools. The girl that invented spanks graduated from FSU. Not a donor though not happy /w us for some reason.

    Carlton, Are you trying to tell me that the powerful people there havn’t explained to the alleged victim , that if they are lying , that there would be hell to pay. OK. You make FSU sound like ST Johns Fischer, right.
