Fizz Five: Syracuse Can’t Slow Down Tajh Boyd & Explosive Clemson Attack

The Fizz breaks down Syracuse’s loss to Clemson using the Fizz Five.

It took just 38 seconds for Tajh Boyd and the explosive Clemson offense to jump on the board inside the Carrier Dome Saturday. The Tigers tamed the Orange 49 – 14 in SU’s inaugural ACC game thanks to Boyd’s masterful performance. They didn’t hesitate to score quickly and efficiently as they turned in three of their touchdown drives in less than a minute. Clemson took a convincing 21 – 0 lead after the first quarter, and the main highlight of the opening half was Scott Shafer’s profane words at Dabo Swinney going for it on fourth down with the game clearly lopsided.

It was just one of those games where no matter what Syracuse threw at the Tigers, they had an answer. Let’s break down the loss using The Fizz Five:

Boyd dominated, and Shafer praises his play

Heisman hopeful Boyd tied a career high with five touchdown passes in a game and set a personal record of 455 yard through the air. Clemson’s offensive attack alone proves the program’s no. 3 rank in the country. Shafer admired his ability and said he’s “perfect in that offense.” He connected with four different receivers in the end zone and utilized the shotgun formation perfectly. Despite the great showing of SU fans (we’ll get to that), Boyd and company didn’t commit a significant penalty throughout the contest. Clemson could give Oregon a run for its money if it continues to score points like it did on Saturday. The Tigers have averaged 40+ points per game and lived up to that standard once more this weekend. Three-year starter Boyd gives them a chance every week to dominate offensively.

Clemson’s pace clearly proves it’s a powerhouse

 The three-touchdown lead minutes before the first quarter finished was enough to show how fast this team is. Clemson converted 15 more first downs than Syracuse, 27  to 12. Boyd remained comfortable and poised in the pocket all game long and the chains moved rapidly. As for the Tigers defense, it entered Saturday having just allowed two passing scores all season. They upheld that stat with their pressure and aggressiveness. Clemson didn’t have to step on the gas pedal very hard to pace its victory over the Orange but it stepped up when it needed to. Syracuse made just 20 percent of its third-down conversions. It’s sort of cliché when Top 25 programs are always admired for their dynamic athletes and talented players. But Clemson lived up to that as its athleticism and quickness steamrolled on both sides of the ball. There wasn’t even a fight in response to that.

Terrel Hunt comes down to earth, struggled in his first, real test

After breakout stints against Wagner and Tulane, we all knew the bar was set high for Hunt to play well against Clemson. As it turns out, the nation‚Äôs third-ranked team is no Wagner or Tulane. Hunt said postgame SU faced “subpar” teams before Clemson and he personally has to go out next week and find what he had against those less talented squads. Hunt completed just one third of his passes, threw just over 50 yards, and logged three interceptions. This was the sophomore quarterback‚Äôs first legitimate test and by the numbers he struggled. He admitted after the game he didn‚Äôt do his part and Syracuse wasn‚Äôt together as a team. Hunt scrambled and got out to run quite frequently‚Äîsometimes by design, but mostly to avoid pressure.

He carried the ball 13 times to run for more than he passed, 57 rushing yards to 52 passing. What’s good to hear is Hunt seems to understand he’s the guy under center for the rest of the season, assuming there’s no major meltdown or injury. He’s a main leader on the field and can’t get riled up after one loss in a new conference against arguably the ACC’s best. His seven touchdowns to zero INTs stat line was eye-popping, but now the numbers have come back down to earth. Hunt’s no longer an admiration or a sensation. He’s the leader of the offense and must pick himself up immediately for NC State.

Is the 48,961 attendance a sign of things to come?
Selling tickets to watch SU kick off its conference schedule against one of the nation‚Äôs powerhouses¬†couldn‚Äôt have been that hard, right? Well, just about 49K filled the Dome¬†Saturday¬†and the environment was pretty surreal. Shafer even credited the crowd: “I was so proud to run through that tunnel” with roaring fans. He said the fans did a better job than the team. The new train engine sound effect with the smoke to introduce the players running out of the tunnel is a cool set-up. What makes it even better is packing the Loud House to take it all in.
Unfortunately Syracuse’s schedule sets up like this: if the team struggles on the road, then it doesn’t help sell tickets for home games. SU hits the road for NC State and Georgia Tech in consecutive weeks, and then hosts Wake Forest. That’s parent’s weekend so at least that’s going for the box offices. However, the team travels again to Maryland and Florida State before it concludes the season with home games against Pittsburgh and Boston College. Essentially the Orange has to do its best to split these two-game road trips to ensure solid crowd turnouts. If the Dome could get anything close to 40,000 fans at least for two or three more games, then that’s a huge step in the right direction. The big picture is to rebuild this program back to where it was once was, and that starts with a committed fan base.

There are some positives to take heading to NC State

Although SU suffered a difficult loss, there was plenty of good Saturday as well. Syracuse ended Boyd’s streak of 187 straight pass attempts without an interception. Backup cornerback Julian Whigham took Brandon Reddish’s spot in the secondary and delivered with an interception. Whigham said he just “did his job.” Also defensively, Jay Bromley racked up a pair of sacks. He continues to demonstrate his strong presence along the defensive line.

And finally, Jerome Smith rushed for 125 yards and a score, which was a 66-yard breakaway run.

Syracuse now travels to another ACC opponent: NC State. Remember the Wolf Pack kept it close with Clemson a few weeks back, so they‚Äôre no slouch of a program. NC State is also looking for its first ACC win of the season.¬†Shafer said he was proud of the team’s mini-comeback in the third quarter. He had believed SU could keep it a game and told the players this at halftime:¬†“It’s Opposite Day. Every thought you have is the opposite.”

The Orange may have fallen to the Tigers, but it’ll continue to improve each and every game played in the ACC.

    So,let me see the thing you want us to dwell on is the language Shafer was using during the game.

    Let’s put things into perspective here;

    There is no way anyone should put microphones on a coach for a live feed during a football game. It just shouldn’t happen.

    What do you expect,everyone thinks(using that great 4 letter word F**K) is normal these days. I’ve seen and heard parents using that language in front of their 4&5 year old kids,men talk like that to their mothers and in front of their wives.

    As far as I’m concerned,you guy’s always pick up on the negatives. Are we going to read about Shafer using normal XXX rated language every time you want to post something on the Orangemen now? Try keeping your negativity to yourselves in private where we won’t hear or read about it. I for one would appreciate it.

    @Terry,once told me that language like that was part of the game and that he uses it when he sees fit and it’s done in front of his wife and granddaughters. If he thinks it’s normal to use,then let me ask what’s the big deal about Shafer spouting off to another coach?

    This year’s squad could really use the WR in the ’14 recruiting class. Absolutely zero separation against a good defense.

    @DA;

    I thought that after Saturdays game the first thing you would have posted was the good news about a 3* 6’6″ 295 lb OL Aaron Roberts out of De La Salle high school in Chicago committing to Syracuse on Sunday.

  4. Ron Avatar

    @Aaron;

    I agree Aaron,I think guys like 6’5″ Jamal Custis and 6’2″ KJ Williams would have helped us. Now if we can get WR Juwann Winfree and DE/LB Kurt Holuba to join us I could get reenergized for the 2014 class.

  5. Ron Avatar

    Thank you Aaron Roberts for choosing the Orange to pursue your football career at.

    Welcome to the Orangenation,going to enjoy watching you play over the next 4-5 years.

    Good luck to you young man.

    I just wanted to say welcome to the ACC. I don’t mean that in any sarcastic tone at all. I mean it from the heart. Clemson fans are very passionate and proud of our Tigers. We consider ourselves to be a ‚Äúclass act‚Äù and don‚Äôt tolerate poor sportsmanship. We are steeped in tradition (including being an all male military school until 1956). Our first paid football coach was John Heisman from 1900 to 1903. Reading the article above makes me believe Syracuse is just as proud and just as much a class act as we are. I look forward to many years of good, clan competition. Be loud and proud and one again, WELCOME TO THE ACC!!!! OBTW, nice choice of colors. 😉

    @engrtiger;

    I heard that one of the Clemson traditions was to stamp $2 bills with and orange paw on them and then spend them whereever they go for a game. My wife ran the stand located just behind where the ClemsonFans were seating on the first level. Went down and asked her if this was true or not and sure enough I bought 4 of them to hang on the wall in my orange room.

    They are a class act,loved their chant of defense at the start of the game.

    Good luck to you and the team the rest of the year.

    They pay thier OC as much as we pay our headcoach. When Scott Shafer is successful at Syracuse, a real football school will double his pay and send us back to square 1 again. Maybe Floyd Little schould be the head coach.

    Actually..it took Clemson 38 secs. to get Ri’shard Anderson to bite and get beat deep. Bubble screen left//bubble screen right..play action..OOOPS!! Hey Anderson is that your Jacque on the 45 yard line??

    engrtiger…thanks for the kind words..give us a few years and we’ll give you a game.

    as far as coach schafer goes everything is ok just be a little more cautious. our coach loves the game and the competition and feel we will be fine as coaching is concerned. the game , well we made some costly mistakes on both sides of the ball that cost us big time. if syracuse could have scored 2 more touchdowns and prevented clemson from scoring 2 touchdowns now you have a different game because the mistakes syracuse made was just that in my opinion.clemson had a very strong team and also a very strong fan base. all we can do is put this game to bed and get ready for the next game. the recruiting class is filling up now but i’m hoping for a shutdown cornerback. go orange ..

    Ron yes a f-bomb might crease my lips once in awhile. Alot during golf or when I stub my toe!! But a coach should have no resaon to hic-up after that f-bomb was released during the heat of a game. Yes my wife has heard it from me and unfortunately my grand”SONS” have heard it too. But there are far worse things to see or happen to one out there in this world. I have never heard my grandkids say it(around me) lol!! Ron only pruoods make a big deal about this word. Yes a majority of times it should not be used!! But rape, the n-word and hearing from your doctor sorry but you only have 1 month to live are far more serious words/statements!! Such a stupid issue!!

    Again after watching ESPNU many major programs unlike SU are playing Freshmen. SU plays one!! Why not play more at SU?? Are you paying attention HCSS!!! SU’s DB/S suck and can’t think their way out of a paper sack. SU WR’s suck too. WR West was a no show bench him and play some else to. Let alone SU has no QB to be effective againt quality teams!! Who knows if you offer a HS recruit the chance to start right off the bat it might help or it might not make any difference since many other major program do it NOW!!

    I’m really wondering what the staff really thinks of their staring QB situation for this year??? Hunt looked high schoolish out there. Terrible is to good a comment about his play poor against Clemson. The FR QB’s just might be groomed right now under their system. Since Hunt ight not make it unless he plas against poor teams. The FR QB’s I feel just might be better in the long run next year. We’ll See!!

    Do not forget the abused children of PSU!! The NCAA did!!

    @Aaron I agree there was zero separation between our wr and their corners. We lack WR’s and it was evident against Clemson. OC go with what we have and pound Jerome Smith please. Very frustrated with play calling all year. Anderson is not playing well at all, each team throws to his side every game and he continues to get burned. Please play Reddish and Whigham.

  13. upstate andy Avatar

    Well I guess we know where we stand don’t we. I am glad to see that all of you guys aren’t just ripping the team apart for this loss. I do agree with all of what has been said. No WR’s, SEC need alot of work. That just scares me going into next week. I also agree with why we don’t play some of the FR more.
    At WR I wonder why Kinder and Funderburk don’t see the field. JW needs to start improving if he want to be a go to player.
    Also, I can’t understand why Smith doesn’t touch the ball more. The only thing about how they use him I can’t understand is this. Why does the OC keep running the same run play. I’m talking bout that offset to the right or left of the QB. Then try and hand off up the middle. I for one am getting sick of that play. Put AMM in front of him for a blocker and have him run off tackle and lets see what happens then.
    On the defensive side I can’t agree more with all that has been said. Anderson has to get out of sec. He has proven way to many time in his career that he just doesn’t belong. Anytime an opponent needs a big play. They always throw to his side. EVERYTIME, AND HE CAN”T DEFEND IT!!!! I hope that Reddish can play this weekend and for the rest of the season. His time is now for him to take over at the CB position. I too like what I saw from the young man of Whigham. I believe his time is also now if he want playing time. Now that Lyn is out for the season. I feel bad for that kid. I liked him as a DB.
    With all that has been said. I like the recruit that has said he will play for the cuse next season. I also hope that if a recruit does watch our games. That they see that they could have playing time immediately. That playing for the cuse will and can provide them the stage that is needed for them to make the NFL. I just HOPE that they see that. Have a good one guys. Talk to ya later.

    @tyerry;

    your missing my point again on the issue of swearing around the women and children. I just don’t believe in it. Look I’m not a prude,I use the word when it’s appropriate,but when I’m at a football game and there is a guy there with his wife and 4-5-6 years old son or daughter is not the time nor the place to be using that kind of language.

    the second point of my statement that I was trying to make was,if it’s ok fort the people toi be using it around children then why should it be any different for a coach to be using it.

  15. Russell Stugots Avatar

    @Ron,using the F word isn’t appropriate around women or children!Sure its alright in a gin mill/bar or around other male adults and there are like Terry said “worse things” but it shows a certain lack of class and/or vocabulary when other words can suffice!That said I agree that in a “heated atmosphere” it happens!!!Heck Ron we watch our language here on the fizz out of respect for the chance woman or children can feel welcome/comfortable here!

  16. Russell Stugots Avatar

    @Terry but I also agree that in your own home as the breadwinner and head of household at your “advanced age”(79) youve earned the right!!Ha Ha..have a rum rocker on your deck before the weather changes my friend!!

  17. Ron Avatar

    Russell I agree there is a time and place for everything,using the Fbomb in and arounf women and children is not the time or place to be using it.

    My grandchildren has told me over the last 3-4 years that the F bomb has been used by the children that ride the bus. HOW SAD!!!

People tell me that the more Ram you have in your computer the faster your computer will be. I always thought that it was the processor that controls the speed of a computer and not the Ram.. . I had 512MB of Ram in my laptop and I have now changed it to 2Gigs of Ram and I’ve seen no difference in performance what so ever. . Could somebody please explain to me what does Ram does exactly?. Thanks in advance.
