Although¬†the current Orange couldn’t capitalize over the weekend at MetLife Stadium¬†against Penn State, Syracuse reeled in its 11th commit to the 2014 class in West Haven, CT RB Ervin Phillips. The 5’11, 180 lb. speedster pledged SU¬†on Sunday¬†morning. Phillips was in attendance at the Meadolands and said the atmosphere was outstanding, obviously getting him excited enough to commit. ¬†He also said the ACC competition is something he’s looking forward to.
The Fizz¬†spoke with Phillips earlier during his recruitment. We even¬†dissected the top reasons why Syracuse needed to land him for this year’s class. He’s a huge get, especially for a kid from the state of Connecticut. The Orange is¬†trying to reestablish its connection there¬†and it’s good to see it’s starting to show.
Phillips fields just two offers: Syracuse and Temple. Despite visiting the Owls earlier this summer, Phillips tells The Fizz what it came down to:
“It came to whose coaching staff I felt I was more comfortable with or where I could see myself playing with. The Syracuse coaching staff is really down to earth and create a family atmosphere. They’re some great guys.”
Shafer and McDonald come up big to reel in SU’s second running back in the class. Imagine¬†the potential of a new duo in “Naes” Howard¬†and Phillips in 2014.¬†Phillips kicks off his high school season with West Haven¬†this Thursday¬†night. He discussed with The Fizz what the gameplan will be when he’s in George McDonald’s offense.
“They want to get me in the open field, how ever they’re gonna get me the ball they want to do that. Let me do what I do best, get make plays.”

Regardong Naesean Howard’s future as a Orange player. The Fizz might want to scoop other big sites that insist that Howard is scheduled to play on the defense. Phillips is a great recruit for the Orange. He will add depth speed to the running back position. If Gulley doesn’t return PHillips can adequately give us the same type of RB. Get the story on Howard Thats the key.Will Howard have the opportunity to star for the Orange as a RB?
Howard and Phillips might both play D depending on the articles you read. To anyone who has knowledge of the 2 players, whats the early forecast. Next year The Cuse potentially could have GMII and Dev MacFarlane in the backfield(PTG graduates and Smith is draft eligible). Which of the 2 recruits is the better choice to stay at rb and which has a better upside as a db?
In an earlier article you mention that Phillips has speed and “Versatility”. If he possesses both of those qualities,it makes him a recruit that could play either side of the ball.
I see both Phillips and Howard playing defense for the Orangemen in 2015.
Howard plays D but phillips is going to play offense he is too small to play db he and estime are going to be part of the speed that we will have in the spread
Rivals(my dictionary of recruiting) has him a 2 star. I see no speed in the 40 out there for him. Just another 2 star!!! I would like to see Lock from NYC!! Rivals have him at 4.45/40 and at 215lbs!! If true a better fit!! And he won’t play defense!! When your talking about where a player “can” play that just tells one the player is just about the quality you need/want!! A great to good player his position is a diffent where he plays!!

Howard says on his Twitter that the staff has told him he will be on D. I think Ish and Ollison are still high on the SU list and Cortaveous Givins is a big back from Fla in the mix too. Don’t forget the 2015 kid from Texas that is interested and will be at the Clemson game. I think GMII and MacFarlane can hold it down until then if need be, and having some guys like Howard in a pinch won’t hurt. I think McD. sees a lot of RAC guys as his receiving corps. I think pass catching TE and a few bigger guys like Custis or KJ are the vertical threat, but the others, like the Coreys, Avant, Phillips, Estime, Broyld, Ismail, are more the type he seems to want on a regular basis. I am thinking his ultimate scheme is get it to them in the flat and let them make plays, alla WVU.
Malone,,I think a more spread,speed gimmicky O will get the fans and recruits ack though I’m still an Old fashioned D oriented hardnosed FB kind of guy!Only in the North and East do we still revere Defensive football but the trend is for basketball on grass!I said to Ron and I think you already know…watch out for Pitt this year!

Tell me about Malone,Im dissapointed in Pitt but FSU’s triage of Jamesis,O’leary and Wilder are just 3 of a rosterfull of uber-talented kids!Why don’t they ever get together?I don’t think theirs more than 2 or 3 teams with that kind of talent!I won’t even mention FSU’s O-line…wow I’m buying into FSU this year but I’m not as sold on Clemson yet?

One thing I want to say though is I like adding Ervin Phillips to the team as an athlete SB/RB/CB/kr and think he’s under rsted cause he’s from Connecticut!He should fill out to 190/95 w/some good speed and can do a lot of things.His rating will go up to a 3* by the end of the season IMO!
Russ your projections have been off lately. It might be time to go to the deck for a cold one!! Pitt looked decent and better than last year(not good for SU), but FSU still is good. Their FR QB can play, but not as fast as I thought he would be!! FSU’s H back # 1 reminded me of Ashton! But again this Phillips kid is a 2 star and not any better. A typical SU recruit lately and Saturdays game shows what 2 star talent gives you!!
Winston is legit. He has a abouslte cannon as well as that “it” factor. Was Pitt’s D awful? Sure but he only had 2 incompletions and one of them looked like it was a catch. It was really impressive anyway you slice it. Wilder is a grown man. Probably one of the most physically imposing ppl I’ve ever met and he isn’t even the starting RB. I know a lot of ppl around here are already talking about heismans an NC title games but the fact is that FSU’s toughest two games are on the road. Also no1 would confuse Death Valley an The Swap /w Pitt in terms of environment.
All true Carlton. I don’t see Heisman, but they can be in the NC hunt. I think that road in the ACC still goes through Clemson, and I think just about everyone, myself included is waiting to buy into Clemson, which is an oximoron of a statement. That can put a chip on their shoulder and play in their favor. Lets say it now, Phillips is not an every down RB. We don’t want him to be that. We need something else to be that. Our run game will be keyed on this year. We need balance or at least a legitimate passing threat to make the strength a strength, because right now its a weakness if we rely on it too much and teams scheme against it.
Carlton,after that display against a fair(disappointing) Pitt Def and 23 year old QB who I still believe will put it together this year I’m finally on board with FSU and their deep roster of talent!I see them with a legitimate shot at a NC game unless they have a WTF kind of game!I was also impressed with L’ville this weekend and Fresno as a sleeper to upset Boise for the MWC!

Yes and yes. We can’t afford to look past ANY opponent, and Tulane almost took us without a Montana at the helm. Remember, Tulane recruits Louisiana and they play indoors as well. They are as much a threat as say Temple or UConn I’d say. Not in style, but in substance or level of play.
SU needs a “famous Jameis”, not a undersized Rb? But whatever, I’m not too excited about this recruit….@nyone have his junior stats?

Sorry Russ but most of the stars from this weekends games nation wide were above 2 stars easily!! And yes my wallet is much lighter!! Mainly because of NR/2 star talent for SU. LOL!! Had to say that. Pitt does look better this year. This bodes bad for SU. FSU looked awesome and Pitt improved. And SU looked like it had a hangover!! Like I did!!

I continue to believe this Coaching Staff..espeacially On offense…lacked the ability to recruit effectively.
We’ll be another 60+ in recruiting and continue to play like a bunch of “2”‘s and NR.
