Why WR Corey Cooper’s Time at Prep School Could Be Best Thing for SU

He can make dynamic plays on the field, but now it’s time to do some work in the classroom too.

Interesting piece today by Michael Cohen in the Post-Standard about Syracuse signee Corey Cooper. The dynamic wide receiver was one of the jewels of Scott Shafer’s first recruiting class. But he was deemed academically ineligible. To bridge the time between high school and enrolling again at SU, Cooper is living a structured life style at prep school.

“He’s got a 10 p.m. curfew every single night of the week,” Jireh Prep head coach Scott Smith said. “It’s really structured. We watch over the kids 24/7. The coaches live with the kids there in the complex.”

Those parameters, non-negotiable and restrictive as they seem, are the guidelines within which Cooper will live during his semester-long stint at Jireh Prep in North Carolina.

This can only be a good thing for Corey, going through the transition post-high school, but also using his time to focus on his studies, school work, and preparation on the field.

Syracuse offensive coordinator George McDonald, who recruited Cooper prior to taking the job at SU and helped flip him from Louisville to the Orange, visited Jireh to ensure it was the right fit.

Smith said McDonald loved the environment. It was a done deal.

It’s good to see McDonald taking interest in specifically what’s going on with his signees. This is where GMcD connects with his players, and what makes him such a valuable and successful recruiter. He proves that he’s more than just saying the right things. He’s actively trying to look after all his guys, even if it means a stop to a prep school in North Carolina to make sure it’s the right environment for a player who’s ineligible.

“He loved the school down here, loved the atmosphere down here,” Smith said. “It’s a great environment for kids. He just felt like Corey would really thrive here academically.”

In terms of football, Cooper will be one of many wide receivers that Smith and his staff work into their spread offense. He envisions Cooper to be a perfect fit at one of their slot positions — not quite big enough to play on the outside but faster than all of his taller receivers.

It also can’t be a bad thing for Cooper to get some reps in a competitive environment on the field. With AJ Long coming in to SU in ’14, a year at prep school might end up being a blessing in disguise for the Orange offense. If Cooper can qualify academically for Syracuse next fall, the two will end up enrolling at SU together and may end up being the cornerstones of an offense for years to come.

    Now there is two DNQ signee’s from the 2013 class. Is there more??? Every opportunity that thousands of HS non-athlete seniors would jump at because they weren’t born with the right kind of Silver spoon in their mouth!!! Those kids study hard just to find a college that will accept them. And recently the interest rates for college loans double up against these kids and parents. Yet some very talented players just doesn’t get it=HIT THE FRIGGIN BOOKS to qualify. That’s all. I know they are in a minority(DQ’d players), because most players KNOW that you have to have passing grades to play!! And the 2 players so far DQ’d this year from attending SU knew that. I do feel for them, but at the same time I also feel for those HS Seniors with academic talent that can never attend SU because of their lack of $$$ means to get to SU. I’m tired of all the freebies thrown these players way, yet they just refuse to deal with it. These players knew it for years its not just a recent problem. If Cory can understand a certain number of WR routes he’s running he can also open up his laptop too!! Its that simple!! Look there’s an UFO-up ther!!!!????

    If talented a kids had great academics he wouldn’t be at Cuse! This isn’t new. Guys like Flyod Little did a year in prep school because his High School academics were bad. Today he’s a lawyer in Denver. These are kids…our public schools suck! I think finding kids that can play and guiding them to proper discipline in the classroom is a good thing. Helping them grow up while they help build a good program is a good deal for everyone.
    Takes time to build a program. Takes talented players that each have their own story. Parents want to hear a school is going to do more than use their kid. Build a reputation for supporting and doing the right thing for the kids and everyone profits.

  6. Ron Avatar

    @Cuse17;

    Great insight cuse17,but I think just the opposite of your statement(If talented a kids had great academics he wouldn’t be at Cuse)! What about Tim Green? Rhoade Scholar,athlete,author and most of all a lawyer. I know there are others who managed to conquer both academics and athletics during their time spent at Syracuse. Tim Green was the easiest to remember.

    Syracuse posts on it’s website athlete scholar’s of the week winners. So I know others seem to manage both well.

    It just seems that we all focus on the football players and ignore all of the other athletes that are representing Syracuse University in other sports.

    I tended to think this was fairly new (non-quals)…why are they targeted?Don’t they look into their grades closely?C17 is right about our public school’s in the cities tho?Ron,is it true Trejo is having grade issues too?Thats a major problem esp when you go the JUCO circuit!!I’ve never liked it except to fill 1 or 2 holes but not to fill up a class!Theres reason’s why these guys need to go to some of these diploma mill’s!Im getting tired of waiting for KJ to “just say SU”??Whats so hard about it?There are loads of good WRs out there so s**T or get off the pot!!Even if he commits I’ll worry about him…he’s held back so much I’m giving up on that 1 kid for us!!No one recruit is bigger than the program!

  9. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    Russell, I haven’t heard or read anything on Trevon Trejo having difficulties with his school work.

    It’s another story with 6’4″ 310 lb DL Wayne Williams.

    Look these two players are both on the defensive line and once here,will have only two years to play. Both players should realize that their school work is the corner stone to their success.

    Whom ever it is that’s advising people like Trevon and Wayne are giving them wrong information on what it takes to succeed in life. Not only on the football field but after their playing days are over.

    I hope someday before it’s to late, they both wise up and listen to what others are telling them.

    You can lead a horse to water,but you can’t make them drink,fit’s the problem pretty well here. Dolesn’t it?

    Just got a commitment from 4 star wide out K J Williams today. Great news for Orange nation. This staff has recruited some talent in just a short period of time.Look at the wide receiver talent in the 2013 and 2014 class so far………Outstanding. Gone are the days when we had to battle Akron for recruits…..remember those days?
    I hope this is the beginning of big time talent recognizing that Cuse playing in the ACC is BIG TIME FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!

    @Russell MacEachern,Dr.Bill;

    I have reservations concerning the verbal by KJ Williams. If you go to the Syr.com website and read the article about KJ, you’ll find the reason I’m a little worried about this recruit. I’m going to hold off my comments about him until after NLOI signing day in Feburary.

    Now let’s see here;AJ Long,Zaire Franklin,KJ Williams,Jason Cabinda,Parris Bennett,Colton Moskal.

    Syracuse put out over 30 offers to 4* recruits this year for 2014. I made a statement that I wished we could get at least 10-15% of those offered. Well it looks like to me that we’ve already reached 20% of the 4* recruits,and I still believe that we’re going to get even more.

    I know the response to this post is going to be about some of the names I listed. Before anyone complains and tells me that I don’t know what I’m talking about,let’s wait until this high school football season is over to see if any of the current recruits are elevated to 4* status.

    Hey everyone,for all of you that follows the national rankings this commitment should move Syracuse into the mid 50 range.

  19. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    My enthusiasm/optimism is starting to rise again Russell.Things are starting to look up for the Cuse.

  20. Ron Avatar

    Oh!! damn,I forgot to add Corey Cooper to my list of recruits who I believe are already 4* athletes.

    sorry.

  21. Ron Avatar

    @Dr. bill;

    Please remember that Akron is a D1 football program and they go after a lot of the same recruits that everyone else goes after. Did you notice that their basketball team was the 12 seed and had to play VCU in the South Region?

    If you haven’t visited their campus to watch them play a game of football in their brand new outdoor stadium,then I think it’s high time you did. If you do go there,I know your going to come away with a different outlook of Akron.

  22. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    Were headed in the right direction as far as the rankings go(upwards). I guess i’m going to excuse them for their mistakes, the information about the recruits is incorrect.

    Syracuse is now ranked #57

    Hey Guys I’m a Huge SU fan and I don’t wanna spoil this big get. But from what the kid said, I don’t like it. I know we’re dealing with kids, but what he said didn’t sound good. I hope we get him but I wont believe it until he is here. He gave me a bad vibe. For the record that’s just my opinion and he is a young kid and this is the biggest choice of his life and I have no knowledge of his personal life, its none of my business. But call me a skeptical fan after listening to that

    Great get!! If he gets to SU though. Was it his choice or pressure from friends/relatives to verbal to SU!! His HS coach said it right that there are dozens of 4 stars there @ Michigan while none yet at SU. SU needs talent like him. He surely does not look like a NR/2 star player like dougie would get.

    RON/RUSS Now SU is 57 and that’s a great jump. 72>57 is quite a leap. For just one player. I believe in these services, but this move for just one player is a little much. But still 57 is building into a better program.RUSS=Conspiracy theroies??? Mr Williams ain’t from NYC/LI is he. That’s the only conspiricy that I see!! So Russ go see your counselor lay on his couch and calmy tell him your deepest toughts(if you have any) and calm down!! LOL!! Williams is a great player and would not be here if dougie was still here!! But I still see Mavety and Ollison a no show in the 2014 class!! But I honestly hope I’m wrong. After all “I don’t mind being wrong but damn it I hate it when I’m right”!! And so don’t you guys!! LOL!!

    Russell MacEachern

    Terry,I thought you said 48/52 was unrealistic?With 1 “sort of a commit” we jumped over 13 spots?@Ron,before AJ Long committed I followed KJ Williams cause he had RU and Mich as his favorites but in an interview said he visited us (SU) last year(12) and wasn’t impressed then all of a sudden his cousin commits and makes promises and were at the top of his list w/Mich?..Trouble brewing?

  27. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    I’m going to hold my thoughts/concerns on Mr. Williams until after NLOI signing day. I agree Russell something smells a little fishy here.

    It looks like Terry is a bit happier now that we’ve jumped to 57th in the national rankings. Gezzzz, just think what our ranking is going to be if we get a couple three more 4* recruits to commit. Let’s let the coaching staff do their jobs. There is no doubt in my mind that more of those (4* athletes)are on their way.

    You know Russell,Terry has to get up out of bed trying to figure how in the hell he’s going to try and figure you and I wrong,each and every day. Haven’t you noticed? HE’S THE ONLY ONE THAT’S EVER RIGHT. Or at least he thinks he’s the only one.

  28. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    I apologize,I miss spoke when I said we get a few more 4* recruits to commit.

    I believe that we will get some more 4* to commit,but if we continue to get those high three stars that really are closer to being 4* recruits coming out of high school,then Russell yes our ranking is going through the roof.

  29. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    RON/RUSS Now SU is 57 and that’s a great jump. 72>57 is quite a leap.

    Terry Syracuse was #57 even before Williams committed.It’s just you couldn’t see it. The reason we jumped so high was the quality of the other recruits who committed. One person doesn’t make a team Terry,the foundation had been alrady set. Let’s give credit whare credit is do and give thanks to,AJ Long,Zaire Franklin,Jason Cabinda,Parris Bennett,Colton Moskal and Corey Cooper.

  34. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    It appears that 6’7″ OT Jamal McGloster has fallen off the face of the earth Russell. I can’t find his name anywhere on any of the recruiting sites.

    Do you think,going to St Anthony HS in Jersey City,being recruited by Bobby Hurley SR. and outgrowing the game of basketball has anything to do with his disappearance?

    I’ll look a little deeper Russell. If I remember correctly,he did commit to Syracuse.

  35. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    After reading the stories on these young men,AJ Long,Zaire Franklin,Jason Cabinda,Parris Bennett,Colton Moskal and Corey Cooper,I’ve come to the conclusion that they have good work ethics,moral convictions,compassion,trust for their team mates,which convinces me that these young men will be champions in the game of life Russell. I for one am impressed with them all.

  36. Ron Avatar

    @Russell McEachern;

    It took me a while to find the information on Jamal McGloskey. Here is my earlier post;

    There is no one who can say that this coaching staff is trying their very best to build a winning program here at Syracuse.

    Coach Shafer recieved another late commitment for the class of 2013.

    6’7″ 290 lb (N/R) OT Jamar McGluster out of St. Anthony HS Jersey City NJ commited to Syracuse today.

    Russell,we have another player from NJ. That’s great man. Shafers efforts are starting to pay off and I’m hoping other recruits are paying attention.

    Can you feel the “winds of change blowing across the field at Syracuse University”?

  37. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    Better information is found on scout.com website for Jamal McGloster,Russell. He’s another late commit to the class of 2013.

  38. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Oh that’s right but then he’s a student now not a commit?Maybe thats why we jumped 15 spots by 1 gain 1 ommision by reassigning class? He’d better put his sneakers on since he has no FB experience?At that size he should pick it up quick lol!

  39. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    If Bob Hurley was giving Jamar guidance that helped him come to Syracuse,then I think it’s going to work out ok for us.

    I think Bob is a man that loves working with kids and would never steer them wrong. I think Jamal McGloster committing to Syracuse is going to be a project along with 6’8″ 310 lb Jonathon Burton out of Fork Union VA.

    Both of these players have a lot in common. Neither one has played football for very long, and both are N/R recruits.

    If successful,both players will help cement the legacy of Coach Shafer and his staff as being one of the best to ever coach at Syracuse University.

  40. Ron Avatar

    Oh!!!I forgot to mention. I feel both,6’8″ 310 lb OT Jonathon Burton out of Fork Union VA and 6’7″ 290 lb (N/R) OT Jamar McGluster out of St. Anthony HS Jersey City NJ, are large pieces of pressurized pieces of coal that will be turned into 25 carat diamonds.

    What a lot of people don’t think of is how much all these WR’s were getting will open up our RG and we could become explosive again like in years past!Remember the kid from Jersey a WR named Johnny Morant ?Wasn’t he one of our highest ever rated recruits?

  42. Ron Avatar

    @Terry;

    I know that it’s going to look like,Im beating a dead horse here. But I’d like to make one more comment on Corey.

    I listened to Brent Axe interview Michael Cohen on radio today. Brent asked him what the problem was with Corey,his reply was that Corey’s GPA was high enough and did graduate high school and took the SAT test 5 different times but couldn’t get the right grade for admission to SU.

    I guess the problem is/was that they combine the SAT & GPA scores and average them. I didn’t know that. Michael went on to explain,if his GPA was high,then he didn’t need to get a high score on the SAT test as long as it averaged out to what was needed to enter college. If his GPA was low then he needed to get a high enough mark on the SAT test in order for him to enter college.

    This will be the last I speak of Corey Cooper. I’m looking forward to seeing him play in 2014.

  43. Ron Avatar

    @Russell McEachern;

    here a little information on Mr. Morant that will back your up claim.

    Born in Newark and raised in Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey, Morant graduated from Parsippany Hills High School in 2000. After an outstanding senior campaign, Morant was rated the best receiver in the East and third best in the nation.

    All I can master,is when your right,YOUR RIGHT.

  44. Ron Avatar

    @Russell McEachern;

    Johhny Morant is now a college coach. The following are his credentials.

    1.2009-2011 Parsippany High School, Assistant Head Coach.
    2.2012 Southern Tech, Morant was the Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator & Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
    3.2013 Kentucky Christian University, Morant is the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.

    If he’s from NJ and knows the area well,why don’t we hire him as a recruiter for the NYC/LI/NJ areas. Rob Moore and Johhny Morant teaming up and going after recruits from those areas would be awesome,baby just down right awesome.

    Makes one wonder just how much damage was done during the GROB era and have it carry over into Doug Marrones tenure.
