Will Syracuse be playing in a postseason conference tournament in the Big Apple once again? It’s possible after the murmurs that came out of the ACC meetings last week in Florida. Several coaches, athletic directors, and officials engaged in deep discussions over whether to move the ACC Championship from Greensboro to a major market such as NYC.
This possibility has been on the minds of teams and fans ever since realignment took place and destroyed the Big East we came to love. But does the southern-based ACC want to move away from its longtime center, and further from several of its original fan bases. The current contract with Greensboro expires after the 2015 season. Plus, MSG is starting to fill its calendar with a tourney for  the new Big East, and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn is hosting the Atlantic-10. Jim Boeheim and Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon have been pushing the conference to explore playing in New York, and no legitimate talks are going about a move.
Although a vote is still down the road, sources have been saying it is only a matter of time until the ACC tournament is moved to NYC. Several legal issues have to be sorted out. MSG can opt out of its contract with the new Big East if the conference does not reach certain benchmarks. Getting the Orange playing its postseason in New York would be the best possible move to keep the basketball success rolling. Fans are already salivating at next season’s schedule, and a postseason tournament in New York is the biggest thing we all miss about the old conference.
It would also work well for the ACC. A spot in the World’s Most Famous Arena would give the conference tremendous exposure to an area filled with sought after basketball recruits, and loads of alumni from several of its cornerstone schools. Plus the ACC would be picking up where the old Big East left off. Add in schools such as Duke and UNC to the existing members from the old conference, and the ACC Championship would become must-watch TV in March.
A move to the Barclays Center is a solid backup option. Brooklyn offers much of the same exposure the ACC is looking for. While it’s not MSG, Barclay‚Äôs is a fantastic facility and is less than a year old.¬†Greensboro is the heart of the old ACC, but like with every decision, money and ticket sales are a driving factor. Although games such as SU/Duke or Duke/UNC would sell out any arena, would Clemson/Wake Forest work up North? The ACC will have to gauge how well southern fan bases are willing to travel. The conference has held its tourneys outside of North Carolina before, but never as far north as New York.
Orange Nation has had time to accept college sports are going in a different direction. It’s sad to see the best basketball conference ruined right in front of us. However, a tournament move to the ACC might just create some magic of its own.

Let’s have the ACCFB championship title game in NYC too!!
The reality ofSyracuse playing in MSG is thats a home game for the Orangemen.Whethrer its filled b travelers from this city or NJ the fans will be covered in orange colored shirts and other suitable garments favoring the Orange. I doubt the current members of the ACC will be willing to cede that advantage to the new kids on the block.
Why not set up a schedule that would rotate the tournament between Charlotte and NYC on a yearly basis. That way the ACC would keep it’s tradition and at the same time,usher in a new era for the league,making everyone happy.
But on a side note,you have to be aware that in some parts of the South(maybe all of it)the people are still fighting the Cival War. It’s still the North against the South and feelings run deep when you discuss it.
Won’t happen as long as the majority of ACC teams are below the Mason/Dixon line!!
lets organize a march on Atlanta or (Raleigh/Durham) with Gen.Sherman and make our demands known!!Terry,organize the troops and make them wear orange hankerchiefs around their necks so we’ll be recognized!!
Terry- none of the southerns will want to sit out in the freezing ass cold for a football game in NYC. Just saying.
I think it is a great idea but Duke an UNC will have to agree or it won’t happen. They will want a butt load of cash in exchange for the move. Big TV deal an contract from MSG I’m sure.
Only kidding!! Just remarking on the quest for an ACCBB tourney at MSG!!
@Carlton;
The one thing that has always been used against Syracuse during the recruiting season is the wheather. So much snow and cold for so long. I could never understand the reasoning behind a recruiter telling the kids that.
Carlton,because of your statement to Terry are you saying that none of the southern recruits would ever want to play for the Bills,Giants,Jets,Packers,Browns,Vikings or where ever else it snows or gets cold? Are you telling us that the pansy asses would pass on all of the money that comes with playing up north?
Sooner or later those same recruits that passed on Syracuse are going to face the snow and cold if they continue playing ball after their college careers are done.
Coach McDonald is at it again,he’s after a couple of top recruits out of Miami Northwestern and a line backer from Pa.that sounds like he’s interested in Syracuse.
You can read both articles on Syr.com website.
The 2014 class could very well be the class that all of has been waiting for,for a very long time.
GO get em coach go get em.
Ron- Of coruse they would play in the cold weather for $$ but no no1 wants to play in buffalo unless its for a boat load of $$. See Mario Williams. Syracuse and the Vik’s play indoors anyways. It still be a tough sell to sell a kid on the salt city then the palm tree city aka Miami. It is easier for basketball b/c the best bball players are from the northeast and midwest and are use to that weather and the game is played indoors anyways.
I was speaking on more to the point that families and fans of the ACC wont want to pay to fly to NYC, pay for an expensive hotel, food and then have to sit in the freezing cold to watch a game.
Its a shame its come to that….when I think of some of the greatest games I think snow and ice but we’ve become soft as a society and everyone wants 24/7 sunshine and lollipops or smooth sailing!!Im afraid our great society has passed it apex!!
in the meantime the great plains states ground water supply is disappearing and it’ll take 100s of years of rains at least to get it where it was in the 1920s so LasVegas can shoot fountains of water 50 ft into the air and we can turn the Tucson desert lush so we can sun our bones in our retirement….where or where has “the greatest generation gone”?…Well I know where were going..south!!lol..
btw,whatever happened to Normas Stitz??or Mike H?
@Carlton;
I knew what you were saying about the people not coming north to watch a game,and you were right.
I tell all of the kids at college when they complain about getting “A COUPLE FEET OF SNOW”,that you never want to be afraid of it,that they should go out and enjoy it,go play in it(sledding,sking) you’ll have a ball. Then I say to them that they haven’t seen anything yet because we’re used to getting 10-12 feet of snow a winter.
Russ,
I don’t know if we have grown soft but I think its more to the fact that if ppl are going pay the 100$ a ticket and 8$ a beer at the game that they wanna be at least comfortable in doing so. I always loved the snow games in buffalo when I was younger. I remember walking out of the Ralph and not being able to see 3 feet in front of you b/c it was snowing so hard.
Ron,
That is why I had no intrest in going to SU. Growing up close to Rochester we got enough lake effect for my liking and I know its only gets worse as you head towards Syracuse or Buffalo for that matter. Yes snow is fun to play in but not to march up and down hills in to get to class or have to drive in to get around.
@Carlton;
it’s true you really have to learn to drive in the snow here. But honestly Carlton I have to give the road crews credit,because after we get a storm that drops 3-4 feet of snow over night,the next day the roads are bare and nothing to worry about.
The only things that I believe are hurting Syracuse and the rest of the state are our politicians and taxes. With the rich tradition that Syracuse University has and the academics that it provides is priceless. Everyone says that Syracuse is so boring,but if you were to take an 1-1 1/2 hour drive in any direction from the university there’s a ton of activity for people to do. We have the St.Lawerance Seaway to the North and the Baseball Hall Of Fame to the East and everything in between that you could think of.
Just letting you know that I do understand your comments about the snow and cold though.
Have a great day and thanks for the discussion.
Ron,
Yes Cumo an his liberal buddy’s down state keep sinking our state. Reason y I will avoid coming back to NY state if I can. Anyways I don’t think that really impacts a kid picking to play at SU anyways.
Carlton,I was meaning u or anyone else in particular moving to better climes…just speaking in general!Ive even come to think if I was 10 or 15 years younger I might’ve done it!Either NC or Northern Fla cause southern Fla is to humid for me!!I have loads of old friends who winter in TB and summer and fall Jersey!!I thought a lot about it since we’ve talked and I completely understand u esp coming from the Great Lakes area..as a teen(20/22)I lived in SD and LA for a couple years but missed the seasons and my family..I have a few regrets but we follow our heart and instincts as best we can and live with it!!
^edit 1st sentence above…^I “was’nt” meaning u^
This Jabril Peppers guy has everyone wondering and confused in re:his commit on the 26th!!??
@Ron,funny,all this talk about snow and winter I DREAD the dog days of JULY/Aug…the best thing about August is footballs coming!!!HaHa
@Russell MacEachern;
Russell,I think people were born to bitch. In the winter they say it’s to cold and can’t wait for the summer to arrive. In the spring when it rains they complain because they don’t like the rain to get them wet and in the summer they compalin that it’s to damn hot.
They just can’t make up their minds as to what they want period.
When I mentioned snow to the college kids and told them that we really needed 10-20 feet of it,they all looked at me as though I was crazy and asked me why I felt the I did. I explained to them that the snow was our water content and that we had a drought last summer and needed as much snow as the good Lord good muster for us.
They were surprised because no-one had ever told them that snow helped us with our water supply during the summer months.
GO FIGURE!!!!!
Amazing…some kids must think snow is made of cotton instead of water lol!!
guarantee big time interest The rest of the ACC schools have excellent reputations so the ticket sales shouldn’t suffer. Some ACC fans would travel to NYC for the games and a vacation experience.
It will happen! Money, money money. It will be a great draw and will feature some of college basketballs best match ups. It will be must see college basketball.
As much as I look forward to the new match ups, I miss the old days before even the Big East expansion. Georgetown, Ct, Villanova, St John’s ..all twice a year! What great games and fun rivalries. Then the Big East Tournament in NYC. Never missed it……
Hate to sound like my Dad … But those were great days for college basketball!
