Nassau Community College head coach Curtis Cuilliam said Chad Mavety loved Syracuse right out of high school and dreamed of playing there. Even the family of the star-studded, JuCo offensive lineman attended SU back in their day. The 6’6”, 320 pounder still has Syracuse high on his wish list despite high interest from top heavyweights across the country.
The 4-star bulldozer tackle fields offers from Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State, Michigan State, and Oklahoma. That’s the cream of the crop, with several other programs attempting to land the Garden City, NY native. Guilliam tells The Fizz Mavety is looking at all schools on an equal playing field:
“He’s just looking for the right fit with his position. He’s looking for a good staff. He’s going to be a star no matter where he goes, it’s just a matter of him getting comfortable in the right schemes.”
Mavety‚Äôs¬† stock has increased considerably since high school and he‚Äôs a perfect example of mastering the JuCo route. Mavety attended Sparta High School in New Jersey at the beginning of his young career. Now, he‚Äôs arguably the #1 JuCo offensive lineman in the ’14 class. In terms of his own individual game, Guilliam tells The Fizz he‚Äôs got to put on some more meat and strengthen his mechanics:
“Chad’s got to develop and get stronger. Technique wise he needs to make some adjustments at the line of scrimmage.”
But there’s already plenty of upside and not much room for error in some aspects of Mavety’s game, according to Guilliam:
“He’s naturally a very good athlete. He can run and he’s big. You don’t find that very often. That separates him from everyone else. For example, he could only bench 225 pounds two or three times when he first got up here. Now he can do it 22 times. He’s worked off the baby fat and his work ethic when coaches are or not around is exactly what somebody at the next level is looking for.”
Mavety’s in-state connection obviously helps the Orange in its recruiting pitch. Guilliam has always been a fan of the Nassau-SU connection over the years. He even mentioned that his squad wears the same orange and blue, and looks to add jersey numbers to the side of their helmets just like the Orange. He thinks Mavety could enhance that link even more if he seriously considers Syracuse. While Brooklyn’s Thomas Holley replaces Ebenezer Ogundeko in SU’s race for New York City’s top prize in this year’s class, Mavety could be setting his own standards for the general, N.Y. State connection. Guilliam finds the in-state connection to be invaluable to SU.
“The experience of playing in the local area is great. Recently we’ve has four guys go through the whole thing. Put it this way: it’s either you want to be a big fish in small pond or a regular fish in the sea. The connection between here and their coaching staff will always be strong. We love Syracuse.”
The decision isn’t easy. Do you head to an established program like Ohio State or Alabama, or consider a program like Syracuse where your presence is felt immediately although winning might not come all that fast? As a JuCo transfer, Mavety might not be around long enough¬†to see the Orange “storm the ACC” as Shafer likes to put it. However, the ferocious lineman does have some recruiting connections in his class.
Nassau RB Travis Lock is very high on Syracuse, and could supply depth to the running back position when PTG and Rome Smith depart. Mavety’s also very tight with 4-star commit A.J. Long, particularly with social media. Thanks to Long, Syracuse football fans blew up Mavety’s Twitter page trying to convince the standout lineman to play for the Orange and potentially bring home an ACC Championship.

In a text message conversation, Long told The Fizz the odds for Syracuse to get Mavety are good.
“Very high and [there’s] a very great chance to land Chad Mavety.”
A comparison to first round pick Justin Pugh says a lot about the next-level potential of Mavety. And you can’t help loving Long’s enthusiasm to try and load up this 2014 class. He’s demonstrating his all-out commitment and dedication to the football program already. The highly sought OT Mavety has a scheduled visit with the Buckeyes in late November. So a decision date could still be a ways away for the JuCo star. Luckily with NY State linkage and some encouragement from potential classmates, there’s no reason to not believe Mavety could possibly be the next big thing up at Syracuse.

Russell MacEachern and I both thought Chad Mavety and Travis Lock would be a package deal coming out of Nassau community college.
Syracuse is also after;6’5″ 320 lb OG Jarrell Broxton out of Lackawanna Junior College scranton PA,6’3″ 305 lb DT Cory Johnson out of The College of Excellance Brooklyn NY and 6’5″ 300 lb OT Jermaine Eluemunor out of lackawanna Junior College Scranton Pa. These are just a few that have both size and speed that Syracuse is after in hopes of rebuilding the offensive and defensive lines here at Syracuse.

Your article is great reading and I for one believe that chad will decide to come to Syracuse in the fall. The 3 maybe 4 guys that I mentioned is only a small part of what Coach Shafer is after. If all of these big guys commit to the class of 2014,then Syracuse isn’t going to be the pushover that people seem to think they will be in the ACC. The ACC should take notice of whats happening up north and prepare themselves for what is coming. They need to know playing,Syracuse isn’t going to be easy for any of them.

AJ Long is doing the same thing as Qb- Allen ’13!!!! I like the recruiter role, but its so early…and kids tend to change their minds alot. I rather Long concentrate on his season, improving, and making it to Elite11? He has a chance if ESPN is so high on him, which they are, he’s graded an 80+ .. He’ll help SU’s exposure more by having a Gatorade POY in Tennessee ’13-’14,, not necessarily.. TWEETING!

Coach Shafer and staff has offered at least 23-24 scholarships to the 27 different D1 prospects within NYS. His efforts have exceeded far more than anything Marrone accomplished during his 4 years here at Syracuse. I give him an “A” for all that he’s doing. If he suceeds in getting some of these recruits then the grade jumps to an “A++++++++++++++”.

I just have a hard time with people being so judgemental and making statements throwing anyone and everyone under the bus. As far as I’m concerned,I wouldn’t mind if the kid came from the planet Mars,to play football for us.

Mavety would go a very long way to pushing the program forward in the ACC and nationally . Our running backs would benefit having a hole opening machine in front of them.Getting him is big serious business for the staff to be sure.

I got that number from scout.com Terry. Actually there are 27 recruits approached by Coach Shafer and staff. The only reason I gave the numbers that I did is beacuse all did not get offered. No this wouldn’t include Zarrara because he committed to play lacrosse not football.
You have to remember Terry,it is only a dream of Zarrara’s to play both sports for the school of his choice. Only a dream,”doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen”
One other thing,the numbers that I gave to everyone doen’t include the recruits within the state that he’s already offered too for the class of 2015..
NYS doesn‚Äôt have that many quality players this year. I guess when statements like these are made,is the reason that guy’s like you and I are fans and not the coaches of the team. I think they’re more qualified than either of us. Let’s let them do their jobs.
Ron 23-24 players from NYS. Gez does that include Zarrara to. LOL!! NYS doesn’t have that many quality players this year. Maybe 12/15 at best. Yes the remaining are good but like Zarrara not really Div 1 quality!! And yes dougie’s job here at getting good talent in is already surpassed by HCSS!!! I to get nervous about verbaled players recruting for SU. Yes its ok to be in contact but don’t over do it. NCAA will do something soon about this I bet!!

I’m having a hard time understanding the difference between Marrons 4 years here and Shafers 1st year. I can’t remember a time when Syracuse went out and offered 28 (4*) recruits scholarships. The articles that I’m reading is just unbelievable. Coach Shafer has got 15-25 offers out to recruits in Illinois,23-25 offeres to recruits in NY,he has another 27 to recruits in Georgia.
I don’t want to hear anything from anyone saying that we ignore the talent from NY. We’ve never ever gone after that many recruits from Georgia. The decision was made long ago to stay out of Georgia because it was cosidered a SEC recruiting state and it was a waste of time and money to go down there. it looks like the efforts given by Shafer and staff will pay dividends this year. I’m not counting the 15-20 recruits that we’re after from NJ or the 10-15 recruits from Florida.
So yes Russell,I believe that the class of 2014 will be a very special class. Whenever a website reports on a committment,they talk abnout how big and fast these players are. Coach Shafer told us all that he wanted to build an offense that was big and fast. If he succeeds Russell,Syracuse will transition into a team that’s never been seen here. A team that has size and speed on both sides of the ball.
Coach Shafer has gone back to the areas that always has made Syracuse a good team,opened new areas of recruiting,midwest and southern regions are now common ground.
If you can’t tell Russell,I’m excited about the direction Coach Shafer is taking us,very,very excited.

russell when I first watehed the tape on Travis Lock and told everyone about the 6’0″ 200 lb RB,you told us all the article was wrong,that he couldn’t be that big,remember? Then again after watching the film we noticed that “GIANT OF A GUARD”Chad Mavety,that was opening holes for him to run through. I also noticed that once Lock was through the line and started down field Chad mavety would also run and block for him showing us his speed.
It’s hard to believe how a coach in his 1st year has got me so excited about the primo type talent were going after!Now I’m concerned if we have a couple of good year’s can we hold on to HCSS?The last time I seen so quick a talent upgrade and buzz on a team was RR’s and shady’s RU …where there’s smoke,there’s fire!!”Go Orange”.. Ron,excuse me while I go do the “Dougie” ..he done us more good by leaving than if he stayed!
Ron,Lock is probably more like 5’10” 190+ but he only concerns me if he help’s us get Mavety here!!Lock is doing what he’s doing because of the ROADGRADER blocking for him and our RB’s are better than him already!But we gotta be careful what we say in case they read our comment’s so I’m not gonna mention anyone in a negative light on the board unless I think it’s necessary!I have to remember their just kid’s!!After all were not expert’s!!

My concern Russell is with all of the offers that have been put out,we can only take at most 25 recruits. Will we get some of these 4* players/ My answer is yes. Will we get a lot of them? I don’t know,I like to think if we get 30% of them it would be nice.
On an earlier thread our friend Malone posted the following. Trey Klock, Antoine White, Chad Mavety, Eluemunor, Cabinda, Erv Phillips, AJ Long, Chris Clark, Zaire Franklin, Cory Johnson, KJ Williams. Russell in this group alone I count a possible 7(4*) recruits.
There is a lot of chatter about upgrading the football facilitites at Syracuse. If Coach Shafer and staff can get some of these recruits to commit,then Dr. Gross,with the influx of new monies coming in from the ACC,should set down with the coaching staff renew all of their contracts and pay them appropiately in order to retain them. That’s upgrading the program. I hope Dr. Gross has the ability to look into the future and realize what value he has in Shafer and staff.
Don’t you think Russell,if Shafer starts winning immediately,things at Syracuse will be hopping?

Good news Matthew Thomas will honor his commitment after all. He had a nice face to face /w Jimbo the other day an all seems well at this time. My personal feeling is this. As a young man you have around two yrs to make a choice. If you sign your letter then you should have to honor that. This same situation just played out for ND and I do not feel sorry that the kid has to sit out a yr for reneging. It is so blatantly obvious UCLA poisoned the well it’s disgusting. I know ppl are like “well coaches come and go all the time” true but you can’t allow it /w players b/c you will be teetering very close to full blown FA in college football and that would be crazy.
The Greg Dent story is kind of disturbing but the young man is innocent until proven guilty. These type of things have to play out in the courts and we shouldn’t jump to conclusions before they do.
As far as on the field goes he probably was going to be a legit #2 this season now I don’t know if he ever will play another down at FSU but will see.

I just read where Matthew Thomas is staying at FSU. Your correct in everything with your answer. I agree that if a kid signs with a school then he should stand behind that commitment. Everyone needs to understand that these are just kids that can change their minds on a whim and in a split second. I’m glad that Mattew has come to a conclusion to stay and understand what’s expected of him. If the kid is as good as advertised,he’ll probably leave early for the NFL anyways.
Carlton your one of the people that I have a lot of respect for. You never have to apologize to me for anything. I really enjoy talking to people who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is. Like when dougie first got here these players are not what HCSS and his staff recruited!! But they are playable. So I’ll give HCSS a break.

Terry you and I agree on a lot of things. The only thing we have different points of view on is the amount of wins Syracuse will have this season.
Did you read the article on how Syracuse is recruiting in Georgia,and did you notice the chart displaying the amount of recruits that we recruited and on the team from 2000 to the present?
Wasn’t it amazing to find that in 2013 we are going after more recruits now and we surpass the total number of recruits offered over last decade.
Coach Shafer has so much enthusiasm/energy,that maybe we should start comparing him to the “Energizer Bunny that keeps on going and going and going”. I beleive the recruits are seeing what he brings to the table and they like it.
Ron you and I don’t agree on the Zarrara issue either. I do admire his dream. But I just want quality players not want-to-be players like Zarrara. I’m just tired of the CBA so called connection. Most of the super talent from there has really bombed out. McPherson has shown he can play though!!

The problem that you have with Zarrara coming to Syracuse is two fold. First it’s pretty obvious to me that you don’t like CBA. The only thing that I know about the school is that it’s a private Catholic School and I’m not going to make comment on a private school. I know bashing christanity is the thing to do in todays society and I won’t condemn anyone who believes in God. The second part,is you think that Zarrara is going to play both sports at Syracuse. Please remember he committed to play lacrosse and if he wasn’t good enough to play at Syracuse he wouldn’t be there at all. The difference between you and I is,I know that Zarrara will not play football because Coach Desko isn’t going to let him do so. Have you forgotton,we have a 4* QB from Texas that’s already been playing lacrosse for two years here. I haven’t seen anyone from the football coaching staff meet with the lacrosse coaching staff and try convincing him to play football.
For me Zarrara playing football and lacrosse for Syracuse Univerasity is a dead issue. The only real difference is the regular season overall win/lose record. I think we improve on last years 8-5 record.
