Locking it Up? Syracuse Battles Charlie Weis, Offers Long Island RB Travis Lock

Can the Orange fend off the Jayhawks to keep one of the best backs in-state?

Newsday.com

Running back Travis Lock of Garden City, NY has always been a fan of Syracuse, and could be the next big get for the Orange backfield. The JuCo sophomore at Nassau Community College is a Class of ’14 recruit, and fields offers from SU and Charlie Weis at Kansas. While the Orange and Jayhawks often tussle over hoops stars, this one is a fight for one of New York State‚Äôs better running back prospects.

The best backfield threats in the Empire State include Lock, three-star Qadree Ollison of Buffalo and Brooklyn-native three-star Curtis Samuel. SU commit, West Genesee‚Äôs Nasean Howard, also makes the board of top guys in NY. Lock’s experience in JuCo is panning out nicely for him, as he had added stock to his services.

The 6’0” 215 lb. speedster rushed for 985 yards in his freshman stint with Nassau. He reached the end-zone 13 times on the year to pace his team’s offense. Lock also grabbed a pair of catches on the season for 97 yards and another score. Lock spoke with The Fizz about his thoughts on Syracuse and the possibility for playing in state:

“My interest in Syracuse is very high. I think it’s a great school and I’m excited that they’re moving to the ACC to play better competition.”

How does he view playing for Scott Shafer and George McDonald?

‚ÄúBoth guys are great and have that everyday drive to win. You can‚Äôt ask for much more.”

What separates the Orange from other programs he’s seen?

“I love the beautiful facilities and I just think the overall football program is great and going to get even better.”

Lock is certainly no “lock” for SU’s program, but he shows a lot of promise and would represent keeping the best players from New York in-state. He’s gauging interest from Appalachian State, Connecticut, Stony Brook, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The Jayhawks are the only other program to offer Lock, because both SU and KU have rosters loaded with upper-class RBs. Kansas currently holds six combined juniors and seniors to compete in its backfield next season, while Syracuse brings back the likes of Jerome Smith, Prince-Tyson Gulley, and Adonis-Ameen Moore. Georeg Morris III has looked great in camp so far, but the future at the position is uncertain.

The Fizz looked into the crystal ball a few months ago to examine potential running backs for SU. Lock should be added to the mix. The ACC was a factor he mentioned right off the top. Lock is one of many running back prospects SU will be reaching out to heading into the summer months of the recruiting process.

    @Russell MacEachern;

    Russell this is the RB that I eluded too in an earlier post. Is this the guy you saw play in high school?

    @Brendan Glasheen;

    Two of our RB’s are senior’s this year. PTG and Jerome Smith both will graduate. Jerome Smith will be a redshirt senior and play in 2014 along with George Morris III.
    If we get Travis Lock to commit for the 2014 class,will he be eligible to redshirt for a year and then play for us in 2015? How many years of eligilbility would he have?
    I can see George Morris and Travis Lock together in the same baskfield in 2015.

    No matter how one looks at this,I feel the possibility of getting Travis is hugh and would make a great addition to the Orange.

    Keep up the good work Coach Shafer,I’m glad to see the program is headed in the right direction.

    Huge get. Because of talent and a NYS kid. dougie couldn’t do it, but lets see if HCSS can. Howard is not a RB in SU’s future!!

    @Terry;

    Travis Lock isn’t the only running back that Coach Shafer has offered a scholarship too. I believe that there are about 4 backs that he’s interested in plus Nasean Howard that has already signed.

    I agree that with your statement on Howard. I see him getting put on defense and playing safety or cornerback.

    Please lets pass on Lock and stick Tuna with this guy and go after Curtis Samuels or other guy with a 5 yr window wth promise cause were not hardup at RB…this guy was a 5’9″150 hs senior and I doubt hes near 6′ 215…maybe 5’10” 190? unless hes not the same guy from Lynnbrook I seen…that kid from Buffalo is legit “Ollison” and a beast that RU,Pitt and a bevy of regional powers are onto!!He could even star at LBer!!

    Russell MacEachern

    For you guys that are high on him I hope Im wrong on this kid but considering the offers on a team w/a beast like OT Maverty on the same team EVERYONE has had to seen him or his tape!!Terry you could run behind Maverty and get more than 900 yards hes the #1 JUCO OT in the nation!!I wonder if we only offered cause Charly the Tuna offered?I know Uconn is high on him but their recruiting is suffering due to conferance affiliation!

    Sorry Ron I misread your comment to Terry that Lock WASNT the only RB we offered as was…our new staff is too smart for that!

    su could probrably use 2 scholorships on rb’s for next years class.

    SU has offered about 15 RB’s so far this year and are interested in quite a few others.

    Ron sorry Howard only verballed not signed. Yes there’s a couple other running back from NYS out there and SU has offered them. SU needs size here too!! But if you want to play RB in the NFL after SU nowadays you better catch a pass and block the incoming blitzs.

    @Russell MacEachern;

    Yes Russell Syracuse has extended offers to Samuels and Ollison. Like I said in earlier post Syracuse has offers to about 5 maybe 6 different RB’s for 2014’s class.

    There is a big time(4*)RB out in Illinois that Syracuse is really trying to get,I hope they’re successful at getting a couple of these guy’s.

    Russell when I first let everyone know about this Lock kid you responded to it the same way as you did in today’s post. I was wondering if you’d remember or not.

    When watching the tape on this kid one of the things that stood out for me was the monster 6’6″ 320 lb OT Chad Mavety and Syracuse has offer’s out to him as well.

    Russell do you think that this might be a package deal that Coach Shafer is putting together for Syracuse?

    I know one thing is for sure is the fact that the recruits Coach Shafer is after this year are way above what Marrone was after at this time of the year during his 4 year stint at Syracuse.

    GO GET EM COACH.

  12. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    The RB out of Illinois that I was talking about is 5’11” 170 lb (4*) RB Justin Jackson out of Glenbard High School–Carol Stream Illinois.

    He’s considered to be one of the best at RB in the nation for the class of 2014.

    @@Russell MacEachern;

    Here’s another tidbit of information Russell.
    I mentioned in previous post about Syracuses’s interest in 6’6″ 320 lb(4*) OT Chad Mavety. Syracuse is also going after another OT from the JUCO route in 6’5″ 315 lb (4*) Jermaine Eluemunor out of Lackawanna Scranton Pa.

    Like I said Shafer and crew are going after players that have a lot of star’s attached to their names. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get these guy’s?

    Go Cuse:

    @Ron,Thats gotta be it…their probably hoping to get Laverty to follow his teammate!!Thanks for showing me the RB recruiting info,..Im feeling better about those other targets!!

  15. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Ron,funny about Mavety..when he went to Sparta,NJ HS almost no one wanted him including NJSU?I knew he was big and could play but I thought it was either/or grades character or both but it was probly just grades….man did he blow up!!

  16. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Theres a sleeper at Tottenville,SI,NYC DT named Peter Mokwuh I hope we try to get him before he blows up…I know UConn and RU are after him already!!Hes a DT about 6’4″ 275!!

  17. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Ron,too late…I noticed later last night he just (Mokwuh)committed to RU…he’s even bigger than I thought…6’5″ 305 lbs!!Damn…but with our new staff I think were gonna end up w/a top 40 class at least this year!!Addazzio already has BC on the upswing and BC and RU are pulling in recruits early….what a time for BC to finally wake up!geesh!!

  18. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Im not sure Ron but I heard Pittsburgh as of a few days ago with their QB decommit dont have 1 verbal yet!Wow,they usually get loads of early commits….maybe our gain is their loss?

  19. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    It’s all about perception Russell. Maybe your post about Chad Mavety could possibly have a character issues. If I understand your remark correctly your saying that he might be the type of person who will tell you exactly how it is to your face when making his point. Well there are a few on this web site who do the same thing. You and I(Terry included) belong in this club. Could it be that the previous staff wasn’t up to the task of coaching a person who stood 6’6″ and weighed 350 lbs? I don’t know the answer as to why we didn’t go after him to play here. What I do know is that Coach Shafers personality is the same as ours Russell,straight talking and to the point. I’m sure that he’d revel in the oppourtunity to coach Mr. Mavety over the next 2-3 years.

    I believe in the long run that Coach Shafer is going to take the Syracuse Football program to heights/places that we haven’t seen in a loooooooooong time.

    Remember Russell,perception is everything in todays world. Shafer has us on the road that is leading us to revelancy and soon will be playing some of the big boys in games on Saturday afternoons soon.

  20. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    Russell,3* 6’0″ 180 lb RB Matt Domer out of Mount Carmel Hs. Chicago Ill. is the kid that shafer is really going hard for.

    The reason I’m writing is go to syr.com web page and read the story posted today about the summers story lines to follow concerning Syracuse Football. The reproter Michael Cohen is interviewing Mike Mcallister from “who knows where” and it just blows me away. It did mention that Coach Shafer and staff have opened up new territory for recruiting and have 15-20 prospects from the State of Illinois alone.

    But please read the story and let us know your thoughts and that goes for everyone else too. With articles like these,does it make any wonder as to why they’ve become a 3 day a week newspaper?

  21. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Ron,OK,I’ll check SUfan.com now and give my thoughts later!!I did notice our coaches were in Chitown at Domers school putting on a full court press!!Maybe we get a steal?(commit) lol keep ur fingers crossed!

  22. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Ron,1 more thing….I notice more offers than ever b4 are going out??Could it be part of the NCAA rule changes?Ive never seen us or the other local schools offering so many so early!

  23. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    Russell,your right again,my head is spinning with all the offers that are being offered to these recruits. The lastest to get offers are;

    (3*)DE Jimmy Hogan,(3*)DB Christopher Murphy,(3*)RB Chris James (4*) S Cortez McDowell,(4*) OT Chad Mavety,(4*) OT Jermaine Oluemunor and (4*) KJ Williams.

    I’ve also read that Shafer and the gang are after a couple more recruits from the greast state of NJ.

    Russell I don’t have any idea as to why they’re giving offers to so many RB’s and TE’s.

  24. Ron Avatar

    @Russell MacEachern;

    The article eludes to Coach Shafer and Coach McDonald as being great closers with these recruits. Then Mike McAllisters reply to the question of how many 4* recruits Syracuse would land for the class of 2014 was”maybe they have a shot of landing 4* KJ Williams who is a cousin to AJ Long”. It looks like Mike McAllister contradicts himself here.

    With all of the 4* recruits that are being offered,I can see Syracuse landing maybe 2-3 of them.

  25. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Agreed,I feel possibly 2 or 3 but package deals are important to getting some of them!!KJ Wms was down to Mich and RU untill his cousin AJ commited to us and gave us an opening but he still seems infatuated with UM after his visit there and tweeted they lead by far but they (Mich) since already got 2 4* WRs so maybe they reached there wr quota?I think we’ll get him and maybe a 4* RB at the least!!Don’t forget were Mavetys “dream school” lol I know..they all say that but maybe we are?You would think if we were he’d already be commited tho!!All in all tho one things for sure…the recruiting targets are getting more respectably PROMINENT from Dougies leftovers!!I knew with the Dougie we’d never get the kind of talent we needed to go where we needed to be….a top 25 or 30 relevant team!Thank god for HCSS!!

  26. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Ron,its because TEs and RBs are great,interchangable athletes we could plug in a bevy of different places..(LB,S,CB,DE,KR,WR)…its now all about speed!!

  27. Russell MacEachern Avatar
    Russell MacEachern

    Ron,lol,if Lock is so high on the ACC why is Appalachian St being considered?Because he knows his options are limited and he’ll say whatever u want to hear!Im SO tired of hearing “lets play the ACC card”…so overplayed….same goes for the B1G or any conference BUT the SEC!!Thats the only card thats a gamechanger!!(SEC)

    With almost everything that seems to be building inside this area, your points of view tend to be quite radical. Nonetheless, I appologize, because I can not subscribe to your whole suggestion, all be it refreshing none the less. It appears to me that your remarks are not completely validated and in actuality you are generally your self not totally confident of the assertion. In any event I did take pleasure in reading it.
