Somers rode its momentum from last week’s win over Mamaroneck to another win in Brewster Thursday night, demolishing the Bears 34-6.
The Tuskers were on fire from start to finish on both sides of the ball. They set the tone early in the first quarter, forcing a three-and-out on their first defensive set and then scoring on their ensuing offensive drive. A heavy ground attack led the team inside the 5-yard line and set up a play-action pass on fourth down to go up 7-0.
Early in the second quarter, the Tuskers’ defense forced a turnover, intercepting Brewster’s QB at their own 19-yard line after creating heavy pressure on third down. The offense took full advantage with a couple of big plays. A few big carries brought the Tuskers to the 15-yard line, where Somers QB Tristan Iglesias rolled left and found his target in the corner of the end zone for the second score. The Bears worked into Somers’ territory on the following drive after a 34-yard QB rush, but a penalty and a tackle for loss stalled their drive and forced a punt. Somers then scored again on the third consecutive drive. A 37-yard Iglesias keeper on third down set up a deep ball down the right sideline for a 34-yard score, Iglesias’ third touchdown pass of the day. The first half ended with the Tuskers leading the Bears 20-0.
The third quarter belonged to Brewster. The Bears stopped Somers for the first time in the game to start the quarter and followed it up with their sole touchdown drive. Brewster used a few big runs to advance from its own goal line to the 50, where its QB scrambled for a massive 49-yard touchdown carry, the lone score of the quarter. The two-point attempt failed, leaving Brewster down 20-6 heading into the fourth.
After a turnover on downs in the red zone, the Tuskers got back on track with elite defense. A sack on second down forced Brewster into a third-and-18 situation near its own goal line, which the Bears did not convert. They punted just outside their own red zone to the 21-yard line, and Somers took advantage of great field position to score its fourth touchdown, this time on the ground, courtesy of Iglesias. He finished with four total touchdowns in the game.
On Brewster’s next drive, a high snap on first down again pinned the Bears back near their own end zone, and Somers secured a 5-yard tackle for loss the next play. Brewster was forced to punt from the end zone once again, but the snap was fumbled, and Somers recovered it in the end zone for a defensive score. The Tuskers forced another three-and-out on the next possession and ran out the clock to secure the dominant 34-6 victory.
Somers advances to 2-0 with the win, while Brewster falls to 0-2. The Tuskers have now looked strong on both sides of the ball through their first two games and have shown they can get the job done on the road. The program is a perennial powerhouse in the Hudson Valley every year, and through the first two games, it seems Somers is destined to be great yet again.
The Somers Tuskers will be back in action on September 18 at Mahopac High School at 7 p.m.
