Forget everything else happening in New York high school football this week. This is the result the whole state needs to be talking about.
Iona Prep beat Christian Brothers Academy Syracuse 38-18 at the JMA Wireless Dome on Thursday night, snapping a CBA win streak that had reached 41 games and included three straight NYSPHSAA state championships. Two programs that had spent years trading the unofficial title of best team in New York without ever actually meeting on the field finally settled it, and Iona didn’t just win. It made a statement.
The Gaels jumped out to a 14-point lead early and never let CBA back in the game, stretching the margin to 16 by halftime. CBA showed some fight after the break, chipping away at the deficit, but never got close enough to make it feel like a real threat. This wasn’t a fluke or a trap game. This was a genuinely dominant performance against a program that hadn’t lost since a non-league game in September of last year, a streak that survived an entire undefeated championship run.
Think about what CBA’s 41-game streak actually represented before Thursday. Three consecutive state titles. A program that had become the standard for Section III football and one of the most respected names in the entire state, regardless of classification. This wasn’t some middling win streak padded by weak scheduling. This was as close to an unbeatable juggernaut as high school football produces, and Iona Prep didn’t just end it. They controlled the game from the opening minutes.
That’s what makes this the biggest result of the young season, and a real contender for the biggest result of the entire year. Both programs entered Thursday as defending champions in their own right, Iona the back-to-back CHSFL and New York State Catholic champion, CBA the three-time reigning NYSPHSAA Class AA champion. Both rosters were loaded with major Division I prospects. This wasn’t a mismatch on paper. It was a genuine heavyweight fight between the two best programs in New York, and Iona Prep won it walking away.
There’s a real schedule gauntlet still ahead for CBA, five Section III Class AA programs reclassified out of the top tier before this season, leaving CBA and Baldwinsville as the only two remaining at that level, and CBA now turns around to face St. Francis of Buffalo next Friday, another one of the state’s elite programs. There’s no easing back into things after a loss like this.
For Iona Prep, this is the moment their program has been building toward. Beating a three-time defending state champion on a neutral field, snapping a streak that long, in a game that carried this much hype, is exactly the kind of win that follows a program for years. This is the story New York high school football fans will be bringing up all season, no matter what else happens between now and December.
