Following Isaiah McDuffie’s decommitment, Syracuse has three players in its 2017 recruiting class. The group consists of New Jersey quarterback Tommy Devito, Florida receiver Sharod Johnson and Michigan defensive end Zach Morton.
In the ACC, only Georgia Tech has fewer 2017 recruits than Syracuse. That number does not bother Dino Babers though. He told the Post Standard on Wednesday that he’s happy with the current class makeup.
“I’m comfortable with where we’re at and I’m looking forward to those numbers [growing] in the future,” Babers said.
Yes, three commits is a small number that needs to grow, but it’s also only June 2nd. At this point in 2014, Babers had no high school seniors committed to his Bowling Green team, according to 247Sports. That class began to fill in by July and included a nationally ranked quarterback in James Morgan.
Between satellite camps and SU’s staff visiting prospective players this summer, the Orange’s 2017 numbers are going to grow.
Syracuse will be represented at ten camps this summer. The first begins tomorrow in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
These camps allow for the Syracuse staff to evaluate talent all across the country. Babers’ and company will forge relationships with players that could pay off down the road.
On the visiting front, last cycle, staff visits played major roles in the recruitments of Airon Servais, Liam O’Sullivan and Joshua Black (although some of these came after the summer).
Back to the main point: three 2017 commitments is concerning. Three 2017 commitments in early June is not. National Signing Day 2017 is over 8 months away. It’s not time to panic.
Syracuse’s class will fill in as the summer progresses. Then the debate will switch from questioning if SU has enough commits, to if the Orange has enough good ones.

Don’t panic…..OK ….We won’t…… What good would it do?
But this is the LAST year that this type of recruiting can happen at CUSE. We have seen this happen for pretty much the last decade where we have a class in the bottom quarter of the ACC going into June…AND THAT’S WHERE WE STAY. This year we had 2 recruits..McDuffie, Daewood Davis and were middle of the pack in the ACC on March 1st. Now, we’re BEHIND everyone except GTECH. Meaning most schools have improved and are filling out their classes and SU is dragging its feet…….but don’t panic.
Babers and Co. get a pass THIS year. It’s a new system and recruits are right to hesitate and commit. MAYBE these satellite camps will be beneficial. BUT OTHER SCHOOLS ARE DOING THE SAME. I have hope that Reynolds, Monroe and Hart can recruit and better than the previous staffs. When other schools have 6 and 8 recruits, it means a lot of quality 3 and 4 star players are coming off the board and CUSE is getting sloppy seconds.
But don’t panic….
Everything goes in cycles in Sports.
Stars don’t mean jack.
I’ve seen players with not stars embarrass players who had 5 stars. It comes down to coaching and the strength program. I’m not a VT fan, but they take no star players and compete every year.
Trust me SU will win the ACC by the third year and dominate in the bowl. Further anyone who is so concerned can write a check & earmark it to “football recruiting” if they care soooo much about who is recruited. So until anyone is ready to do that. Shut the front door, because either you are a DIEHARD FAN OF THE Q NATION OR YOUR NOT!
