The Orange has been going after quarterbacks hard this recruiting cycle, and earlier today Coach Shafer got his first commitment under center.
Rex Culpepper (6’3″ 225 lb.) committed to Syracuse while visiting the Hill today. He’s the fourth commit of Syracuse’s 2016 class to this point, joining RB Robert Washington, WR Sadiq Palmer, and T Cam DeGeorge. He’s a straight-A student and an Eagle Scout.
In his junior year, Culpepper threw for 2016 yards and 20 touchdowns, according to maxpreps.com. He led Plant High School to a 10-1 record in the regular season before falling in the second round of the Florida 8A State Tournament. Culpepper is listed as a “Pro Style” quarterback on 247sports.com, but his 40 time of 4.75 (above average for a QB) indicates that he could scramble if he needed to.
Rex Culpepper won’t be the first person in his family to play college football, either (and no, there’s no relation to Daunte). Rex’s father, Brad, was an All-American defensive tackle at Florida in 1991 and went on to have a nine-year NFL career playing for the Vikings, Buccaneers, and Bears.
Both of Rex’s parents, Brad and Monica, also appeared on different seasons of the show “Survivor”. I admit that this has nothing to do with football, but I thought it was really cool.
Rex’s younger brother Judge, who was on campus with the rest of the family, picked up an offer from Syracuse on the trip. Judge is a tight end who is going into his sophomore year. His decision may be a long way away, but Monica Culpepper did tell the Fizz that “[Judge] loves his bro that’s for sure.” Maybe Rex could persuade his brother to go Orange when the class of 2018 comes around.
Rex Culpepper is already part of one very talented family, and Coach Shafer and his staff are more than happy to welcome him into theirs.

I put a couple of comments on another thread late Tuesday evening. Great get for Syracuse University Football. Great job to the coaching staff,especially to Coach Lester.
hmmmmmmmm…we missed on Brown…and got Culpepper. Anybody else think we got the better end of the deal?
Lester has been on Culpepper for almost 2 years, but nobody knew until a week ago..interesting.
It would be neat if this would lead to Moe Neal giving his verbal…and then Colon… and then Mayden. we could actually
be in the rarified air of a top 40 class.
Good morning to you ORANGEINVA; I posted on another thread lastnight before this article came out. Yes I believe that we did indeed get the better of the two recruits.
I went to other websites to see what they were reporting on Mr. Culpepper and the schools that were after Culpepper’s talents are impressive,and he committed to Syracuse. Great to be a fan of the Orangemen. I honestly believe getting him to commit to us puts to rest all of the comments about this staff not being able to recruit good players to Syracuse by people who don’t want syracuse or this coaching staff to succeed.
Staff is brilliant
putting out the smokescreen showing fake interest in 10 other qb’s when they really only had their eyes on culpepper was just brilliant.

its amazing how the staff also put out there that they were waiting on recruits and weren’t pushing for early verbals and then all of a sudden BOOM BOOM BOOM early verbals. Just incredible leadership on and through out that staff. God Bless Dr. Gross and his ability to hire the greatest football coach of all time. I hope everyone thanks god daily for Gross making that move.
The other amazing thing is that once again the staff was able to continue their domination of Ohio State, Clemson, Alabama, Flordia, USC, LSU on the recruiting trail. Another player with incredible interest from elite programs and yet they couldn’t even get the player on campus for an unofficial visit.

Shafer’s point was we weren’t going to have over half of our class recruited by the middle of July as we did last year.
In the ACC, 5 teams have double digit verbal commits…and 2 more have 9. We are tied for 2nd least number of verbals in the ACC and I think only PITT has less at 3. So it’s pretty obvious, we aren’t pushing for early verbals. And it’s also of note that Washington and Culpepper expect to be on campus in 7 months.
They wanted to commit early and no one had to push them.

Shafer is the best recruiter in the country right now its amazing how things have turned out. Who knew he was held back those first two classes(despite being the two best classes in years).
I mean with Bama, Ohio State, Clemson, LSU, USC Flordia among other programs that pay recruits hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to their schools SU just sits back and these kids beg to come. Word is we can expect five more elite commits over the next few weeks.

they wanted brown he chose BC, they wanted culpepper and he chose SU…..how exactly is that sitting back and waiting lol. Not to mention Brown wasn’t the first SU QB recruit off the board.
I mean can you imagine how this class will blow up when syracuse makes the playoff this year. Its going to be a great time up on the hill.
