The USA Today’s preseason coaches poll is out, and Syracuse is ranked 24th. The ACC will once again be one of (if not the) toughest conference in the nation. The ACC boasts four of the top nine teams in America, and including the Orange, five in the top 25.
Thoughts on the early look at the country’s best:
1. Kentucky – Cal reloads every year, but inexperience is always a factor. Another sluggish start?
2. Arizona – Back to being a scary good program, with excellent recruiting/coaching
3. Duke – Once again deep and talented, but how do they look without Jabari?
4. Wisconsin – Lost to Kentucky in Final Four, by far best team in B1G
5. Kansas – Bill Self just keeps stacking Big 12 titles, this year should be no different
6. North Carolina
7. Florida
8. Virginia – Pressure and expectations mean this is a different season than last year’s Cinderella one
9. Louisville
10. Texas РAlways lots of talent, but the Rick Barnes questions are burning. Is he a below-average coach?
11. Wichita State
12. Villanova
13. Gonzaga
14. Iowa St.
15. Connecticut – Last year was a dream season. No Napier. Likely to come back down to Earth.
16. Virginia Commonwealth – Physical, tenacious, well-coached. Just like always.
17. San Diego State
18. Michigan State
19. Oklahoma
20. Ohio State
21. Nebraska
22. SMU – Larry Brown now has some big expectations. Can the Mustangs go to the next level?
23. Michigan
24. Syracuse – Young, unproven team. But Jim Boeheim always seems to find ways for it to fit well
25. Iowa
There’s clearly plenty of questions for the Orange coming into the season. But one thing we can always assuredly say: Syracuse will win its 20+ games. Michigan and Villanova – two top 15 teams – highlight the non-conference slate. But there’s plenty of time and push overs for the Orange to learn themselves. The ACC is once again strong and deep, but coming to the Carrier Dome will always psych out some unsuspecting teams, and Boeheim’s 2-3 zone will discombobulate a few foes along the way.
The biggest question is who carries the load this year after another departure of NBA talent like Tyler Ennis and Jerami Grant, and a do-it-all leader in CJ Fair. It’ll likely be up to the freshman and sophomore classes to carry the heaviest burden, but with a number of amazing athletes on the roster, the potential is there.

24 might be too high!. This is going to be jet a so so year for the Cuse compared to last year and that great start we had. The team could not score last year and that will be this year’s problem unless a lot of unknown players step up and play big. Our depth at the post will be severely tested if D. Coleman can not play! So, we will see. They may surprise us, but there are so many uncertainties.

I agrere with Jim Boeheim when he tells us that preseason polls mean nothing. To back up that statement all anyone has to do is go back and revisit the preseason polls for the 2003 season,where Syracuse wasn’t ranked al all and became National Champions.
I beleive this year the team will be better than last years team. I don’t know if they will break the schools record(25-0) for the best start in school history,but I do feel they’re going to be a better team and win as many or improbve on last years record(28-6 14-4 ACC) by winning a couple more games. I feel Chris McCullough is a one-and-done player. I also feel to make room for the 2015 class a couple maybe three other players will leave early for the NBA Draft.
Hopefully we play Texas at MSG, really would be the highlight of our non conference slate
24 isn’t high enough. Just look the front court alone. The trio of Xmas, McCullough, and Roberson are going to dominate. Xmas is primed for a huge year, mcculough has a rare combo of size skill and athletism that make nba ppl drool and will be of the charts, Roberson will have a breakout year like 10+ ppl n 8 rb. Scoring boards n blocking shots n if Coleman gets healthy n chino plays well it’s icing on the cake. Then the backcourt is dripping with potential. Joseph will make an impact immediately but gbinje is gonna have a monster year, great court vision lock down defender n pure shooter, his scoring numbers will be huge this year. Cooney will be a double digit scorer and far more consistent this year. His shooting was a huge reason so many games were won last. Also contributions from buss n bj will make this years backcourt way more deep n dynamic then last years team.
