Murky Situation: Why Hasn’t a Syracuse Coach Contacted WR Vaquan Small?

The Miami WR says he has an offer from the Orange.

It appears Syracuse has offered South Florida receiver Vaquan Small a scholarship. That’s according to one scouting service and Small himself. However, Small tells The Fizz in an exclusive he has not actually been contacted directly by anyone at SU.

The¬†6’1″ Small says he¬†was told by his coach at Booker T. Washington High School that Syracuse had offered him a scholarship. It came as a surprise to Small because as of¬†Sunday¬†afternoon he had not yet been contacted by an Orange coach. With that said, Small said he is looking forward to speaking with someone from Syracuse, and assumes that they have not reached out yet, ‚Äúbecause they are busy… and when they get a chance they will call me.‚Äù

Small is a big wide receiver, standing between 6’1” and 6’2”. Small attacks the ball, makes defenders miss, and has a good vertical jump. Small is improving as a pass catcher. With some of the defections the Orange has had with receivers leaving the program, it makes sense that the Orange would jump at a big target like Small.

The receiver tells The Fizz he was expecting one of his offensive line teammates to be offered by SU. According to Small, his coach was in conversations with the Orange staff, but that SU decided it had filled its spots along the O-Line for this recruiting class. But needs at receiver were brought up and Small became the topic of conversation. Small says this is what led to him being offered.

Small says he has offers from Appalachian State and FIU. Scout is also reporting he has an offer from Bowling Green, Samford and FAU. Syracuse is the only Power-5 program thus far to offer him.

Clearly, SU has a lot on its plate right now. And maybe Small is right, the Orange staff is just really busy. But if he indeed has an offer, it’s strange for SU not to have directly spoken to Small. It’s also possible the Orange has shown interest, but there is no official offer yet. However, that would mean previous reports are untrue. Strange situation that hopefully clears up soon.

Shafer takes the right move! Wish he had given the young QB’s were given some reps but Shafer had to make these moves!
Hope Hunt isn’t serious but time to see what the kids have and what a new IC can do!
Probably still be 4-8 but let’s find out what we got!

New OC could be the issue. MCD might be a short timer!

    Hey cuse17,
I don’t think the change on the offensive coaching staff would be an issue in this situation. Regardless of responsibilities, it would make sense for someone to reach out to the kid before offering him a scholarship. Whether it is McDonald, or anyone else on the coaching staff or recruiting staff, you would think somebody gets to him.

Having a lot in its plate is why you have a staff and individuals doing certain activities for the program.Shouldn’t Eric White be informed of this? Thats not a rhetorical question. Its a sincere question that needs to be attended to by someone here. A freaking e-mail might do the trick.

    Hey Chris,
I agree that a busy schedule shouldn’t take away from recruiting. Yes, it can be hard during the season to make time to speak with recruits, but it is something the staff has to do whether it is through coaches, a recruiting staff, Eric White or whatever other ways work and are allowed by the NCAA. We will work on getting more information on this and getting it out to you when we know more.
    Thanks for reading and commenting,
