The Fizz attempted to give some insight into Syracuse’s upcoming matchup with Central Michigan next weekend. Syracuse is expected by Vegas to beat the Chippewas, a team with less talent.  But, the Chippewas dismantled Purdue yesterday and now have beaten two Big 10 schools in the last three years.
Central Michigan won a huge road game 38-17. The team is now 2-0 on the season for the first time in 12 years. Quarterback Cooper Rush went 11-for-16 for 172 yards and a pair of TDs. Rush put on nearly identical performances in both games¬†he’s played this year.
It will be much easier for the Orange to contain the field against Rush than it was against Villanova QB John Robertson.  Robertson abused the Syracuse front seven en route to 199 yards passing and 115 yards rushing. Rush has only rushed seven times this season for a total of 13 yards. The pocket passer will have his hands full with a talented Syracuse secondary.
The Chippewas’ star is wide receiver Titus Davis, who is breaking all kinds of records. He is the current NCAA active leader in yards per reception with 18.9 per play. Bothered by a sprained knee, though, Davis has yet to make an impact this season.
The Chippewas leaned on their running back Thomas Rawls against Purdue. He carried 31 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns. It will be extremely important for the Orange to bottle up Rawls. If the running game is successful there will be plenty of CMU holes opened up in the defense. By controlling the line of scrimmage, which wasn’t happening against Villanova, the Orange can limit the Chippewas’ offense.
The Central Michigan defense has only allowed 33 points through two games. It has picked off opposing quarterbacks five times. Both quarterbacks were held under 175 yards passing. That means the Syracuse ground game is going to have to take over. No more bubble screens, no more slip screens; the Orange is going to have to run the ball. And their backs are perfectly equipped to do that, even if Devante McFarlane and George Morris II haven’t gotten touches.
All the Orange needs to do to win is play to its strengths and the Chippewas weaknesses. By running the ball hard and setting the tone early, the Orange can neutralize the crowd and control the pace. On defense, they just have to shadow Davis (if he plays) and bottle up Rawls to win.

If they hadn’t hyped Hunt all summer maybe we wouldn’t be surprised by the lack of performance.

This game will be a real test for the Cuse. After game one, it is hard to get excited about this team! Did anyone watch Notre Dame dismantle Michigan last night?‚Ķ‚ĶThe speed on Notre Dame‚Ķ‚Ķ.I have not even gotten around to talking about FSU‚Ķor Clemson !!!!! Cuse better get it’s act together quick!!! I watched Virginia Tech beat Ohio State. Tech picked up a Sr. transfer from Texas Tech(kid graduated in 3 years and didn’t have to sit out) No bubble screens‚Ķthe kid was throwing darts..down the field‚Ķ.and he could run a little read option. Why can we not recruit a dual threat QB that is actually‚Ķ.A Dual Threat”?

Dr. Bill I watched the Va Tech game last night and my thoughts were about the same as yours and I feel that FSU,Cemson and Duke should be aware that the ACC has only gotten better. Syracuse needs to step up it’s recruiting efforts if were ever going to vie for a ACC Championship.
So what do we take away from yesterdays game? Is Central Michigan that good or is Purdue that bad? I agree with Cuse 17 about the Central Michigan Game. It’s going to be another dog fight for Syracuse in which we could lose. I just hope they don’t use those damn bubble screens as their main weapon to win the game.
The BIG conference really looked good yesterday with Michigan,Michigan St and Ohio State losing. I didn’t see any of the ball games yesterday because of working. When I got home I watched the VA Tech vs. Ohio St game. I think the ACC Conference won all of it’s out of conference games,didn’t they?
That’s what has struck me..watched ND, Louisville and Vtech last night. Their defenses were unbelievable quick. Quick off the ball, their d-Backs were big yet moved quickly and swarmed to the ball! Big kids with speed and quickness all across their Defenses.
Cuse will really struggle against these talented clubs. Shafer has upped our game in recruiting but it looks like the good teams have as well!
I really enjoyed watching VTech play last night..great defense..speaks well for some great match ups as we work our way to the playoffs.
Cuse has a long way to go…we got to stick with them! This is going to take a while.
Variability seems to be the theme in college this year, maybe even more than previous seasons. Teams are all over the board performance wise early, which is why I’d like to see a larger sample size before I have a real grasp on what type of team we have. Look at Nebraska versus mcneese state yesterday. ….and Iowa state should have beaten Kansas state after getting their face kicked in by an FCS school the week prior. I’m reserving judgment, but we should all realize that central Michigan is a solid MAC program that has bad success in previous seasons. That being said, it is a game we should and must win.
Oh…and I keep seeing Fizz writers calling our secondary talented….I hope that they know more than i do because I’ve yet to see that on display in years. We have experience for sure but opposing quarterbacks have diced us up in recent memory with receivers almost always running free and massive cushions being given.

Wanted to add a comment about recruiting and see what all of you think. Just read where a 3 star line backer from florida just de-committed from the Cuse. What my mind went to was las weekend, I read that one of our first commits this year, a RB named Perkins is out for the year with a knee injury. Never played a game his Sr. year of Hs. Now Cuse will still honor his commitment I believe…so imagine if he was uncommitted and that happened? He may have been on the outside looking in for a scholarship. When Kids commit before National signing day……the schools commits to them(i.e.. they may stop recruiting a certain position)……but the players are not really locked up until they sign. Have any of you seen a school pull a commitment from a kid before LOI Day?
It’s time for some ‘Hard Nosed Football’ against Central Michigan!
Not sure Doc. But scenarios like that add another layer to this recruiting thing. Each side is looking for the best situation/fit. Perkins jr tape looked good and while I take into account quality of competition, he appears to have good footwork and vision. He’s probably not as fast as he looked on film but probably good enough to be a solid between the tackles guy. He has a solid frame to boot. I hope he still ends up at Cuse, gets healthy and as a rs freshman gets a shot to play.
Also, I understand what you guys are saying about the qb position, but to be fair, I think we owe Hunt a couple more games before we determine what he can and can’t do. We need to see his progress as a passer. But ofcourse, we need to see receivers emerge. Too many things are intertwined from the playcalling to the on field play. So I’m not going to write off Hunt as a qb just yet, because I personally feel like I need to see more of him.
As for Central Michigan, I’ve said it before but I think the D has to watch out for the running game. Thomas Rawls is a pretty strong back(Michigan Transfer) who can probably make trouble for the defense we saw in game 1. I even kinda like their #2back Saylor Lavilili. I think Davis is hurt but if he plays the secondary has to look out for him(he is a return man too). All in all, Cuse has to approach this game like its a playoff game. They need to win and come out strong. I believe that they came into Nova game believing in all the hype and optimism and got themselves caught.
btw, Cuse17, you are definitely taking the site’s writers to task.
Tangential Rambling:
In the offseason, I wouldn’t mind seeing former Cuse stars and legends being able to mentor players on the team. Now I know that you don’t want to undercut the coaching staff, but I would love to see a Donovan McNabb or Don McPherson(something about that last name that I like), speak to the qbs and guide them along. Especially a McNabb since he is one of the Cuse alumni of recent NFL note. Should be like a Reunion type of week up at the school during a time where NFL committments(whether broadcasting or playing) wouldn’t conflict. I’d love to see Marvin Harrison, a Qadry Ismail, Dwight Freeney, Chandler Jones, Donovan McNabb, Keith Bulluck, David Tyree(special teams especially), Shamarko, Will Allen, etc being able to work with players and sharing some wisdom.
Brook..Lynn ‘s in the house!! I like your idea about a Cuse reunion with former players gathering to mentor current players. That is what went on for years during glory years at The U..Of Miami! I was told by two former players who now coach HS football in a major recruiting hotbed‚Ķthat during the Marone era, that Doug was not very good at reaching out to former players and that his attitude was such that these guys were not receptive to steering players to SU and both of these schools produce 4 to 5 Division 1 recruits per year. I hope this new staff is much better in opening up the program to former players and creating a real Cuse Family environment around the program.

I join you and Dr. Bill in wishing for a reunion bringing back the former players and showing the youngsters what it takes to succeed and become an NFL player. I believe that by bringing back the former players to help with practices will increase fan support(more people to the spring game and possibly to each practice) and increase ticket sales.
I predicted a couple of weeks ago that the Central Michigan game was going to be another dog fight for Syracuse and was a game that the Orangemen might lose. Talking with the players during this past week their message has been that they all OVER LOOKED Villanova and the team is more focused and will play better this Saturday.
My three son’s families and I will be at the game on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing their stadium and hoping Syracuse plays hard and wins it.
Won’t be easy, but Cuse will come out on top over CMU 31-30. GO ORANGE!!!
