Syracuse came out today and proved that the Villanova game was a fluke, cruising past the Central Michigan Chippewas 40-3 at Kelly Stadium, in Mount Pleasant, MI.
Quarterback Terrel Hunt overcame his ejection two weeks ago and played a great game against Central Michigan. The offense was firing on all cylinders, totaling 464 yards of offense on the day. Hunt led the team in carries with 13 and tied his career high in yards with 92, adding three touchdowns on the ground. SU used five running backs, including Erv Phillips, who got his first carries as an Orange in the lopsided win, finished as the second leading rusher on the team.
First, Hunt came out and proved that he is the starter and the best quarterback for this team. He ran the ball great, using his feet when he saw open space. For the first time in a while, he looked really comfortable throwing the ball and was zipping passes all over the field. Most importantly, Hunt finished drives for the Orange, getting points on the board. He had a total of four touchdowns, including one through the air. He even learned to control himself, appearing to point at the scoreboard when a Chippewa got in his face.
While Hunt was impressive, Phillips was a revelation for the Orange. He came in and played well in his first real offensive action for the Orange. He ran for over 50 yards on his first drive alone and continued to be a big part of the offense the rest of the way, finishing with nine carries for 55 yards. Until the last drive, he was the most successful Orange running back. Then Adonis Ameen-Moore ran nearly the length of the field.
Through the air, 12 players caught passes. That is a lot of receivers to get the ball. It shows the depth the Orange has with pass catchers. Of the receivers, Ashton Broyld led everyone with four receptions. Of the 12 players that caught a pass, three of those players were running backs. Jarrod West surprisingly didn’t record a catch in the win.
Brisly Estime also seemed to be more involved in the offense, which is a good sign. This offense seems designed for Broyld and Estime to succeed, and that showed today. Broyld finished with four catches for 42 yards, and Estime added three catches for 36 yards and a touchdown.
They are the type of play makers SU needs in ACC play.
While the offense lit up the scoreboard, the defense played well, limiting the Chippewas to just 217 yards of total offense. Chuck Bullough and his crew got a lot of pressure on the Chippewas. It was a great effort out of the front seven, totaling six sacks, a safety, and a 35-yard fumble returned for a touchdown.
All around, a great win for the Orange, and exactly what the team needed after the bye week and close win over Villanova two weeks ago.

When one of Central Michigan’s defensive players got nose to nose with Terrel,it would have been easy for him to lose his composure for the second time in 2 games. But I give him credit, Terrel kept his cool while one of his team mates pulled the opposing player away from him.
One other thing I forgot to mention about Saturday’s game,I thought with Syracuse leading 33-3 and the game wrapped up that we would have seen Austin Wilson in the 4th quarter. When games are one sided like this one was is when you put in the backup players so that they can get game time experience helping them get ready and making the team stronger.
Central Michigan benched their top RB and WR for the game on Saturday against Syracuse.
The game against Central Michigan is exactly what the Doctor prescribed for Syracuse. Let’s hope that this week they use the momentum from this victory and practice hard and carry it into the game against Maryland on Saturday.
What are your thoughts on Hunt now Ron??
Young man has turned things around, still has work to do but he’s moving in right direction.. Making plays with his legs, and how about Mr Phillips?? Great game by freshman!!
Dan I was waiting for your comments. My feeling’s on Terrel Hunt hasn’t changed. I don’t know what it is that you see that makes you feel he is so good.
He had trouble throwing the short over the middle pass to the receivers, over threw passes to the WR’s numerous times. He doesn’t possess lightening speed. and more importantly hasn’t learned from his mistake two weeks ago. I feel, if it wasn’t for one of the offensive linemen coming to his aid(by pulling a defensive player out of his face) he probably would have gotten himself into trouble again in the Central Michigan game.
I know what your response might be here. He threw to 12 different receivers for over 200 yards . Some were to the RB’s and the rest were to the receivers. They’re the one’s that made Hunt look good yesterday. Those are my feelings on him and I know that you disagree with me. If he continues to run the ball 13 times in a game over the rest of the season we’re in trouble and I mean BIG TROUBLE..
Were you there yesterday? I got a chance to talk to a lot of people, having my three son’s,one daughter-in-law and 4 granddaughters with me,well!!, it was an amazing/fun experience.
You made the statement and I will agree with you that we all want a QB that will lead us in victory in any given week. I get it ,I want to see the team win too ok. Let’s wait and see what happens this coming Saturday when we play Maryland. And don’t forget I’ll probably be over to Manley Field House in the South Parking Lot tailgating. Looking forward to meeting you and having a discussion on Syracuse Football. If you don’t come over we can meet in the dome,I set in sec 307 row C seats 3,4.
The one thing that truly amazed me in the game was the amount of freshmen that Shafer had playing in that game on both sides of the ball.
Hope to see you on Saturday. GO CUSE.
Notre Dame’s secondary looked suspect to me last night. If Syracuse beats Maryland on Saturday and Hunt can throw the ball down field to his receivers then I feel we come out of MetlLife Stadium with the upset and go 4-0 for the season.
Dan one other thing about the game. What you saw yesterday was the normal Syracuse power house football game. It was a balanced attack and for a guy like me that was exciting.
